A builder on Rebrickable named Thomin created a mod for the official set that is stunning. I would love to see you compare his mod to this model.

Thank you for letting me know about there being a fixed/modified version of the standard model. I've had a look at it and I think Thomin has done a great job with the changes. People often ask if I'm aware of modified or improved versions of Lego models so I'll refer people to Thomin's page if they ask. Much appreciated! (As for the comparison video unfortunately I don't have the time/capacity to make that, it would be a crazy amount of work + involve me buying the original set + mod parts etc.)

@@CraftedBricks No worries! I appreciate you looking into it. I adore Dune but wasn't a huge fan of all of the exposed technic pieces on the official set, this Thomin's mod makes it exactly how I wanted it.

I spent a LOT of time trying to make up my mind on which model to get.
I think Zio's model is excellent at capturing most of the shapes of the Ornithopter and at the same time being almost studless- which can't be said for the lego model (that thing is so ugly up close). I enjoy the simple interior of the Brickvault model aswell. However, one issue I have with Zio's model is definitely the way the cockpit looks. I think it doesnt really work.. Obviously not his fault with the limited parts selection at that scale. I'm definitely glad he went with actual windscreen pieces instead of doing what others have done and just built a more accurate frame with no windscreen. Ive also heard that its a bit difficult to pose all the wings but as I don't own the model I can't really speak to it...
The official lego model is very ugly with it's studs and technic bricks showing all over along with the gaps that comes with the wings. Also all these colorful pieces which lego still opts to use... BUT! I definitely gotta appriciate what lego came up with in terms of technicality. That thing is probably one of the most fun sets to date with all of those playfeatures (which was unexpected). I know some people have problem with it being a technic set in disguise but I think for how sturdy it is and with all of those features, I won't complain. Also no stickers, several parts in new colors and the new wing elements are awesome to see!
In terms of scale, well it's difficult. There arent really any actual dimensions available so it's very much up to debate. I did however find a toymodel at 1:72 scale which would put the Ornithopter at 23 meter long in universe. With this in mind the Brickvault model would be ca 1:63 and the Lego model at 1:42. So, with these dimensions lego is closer to actual minifig scale (although as I said it can be debated).
So which did I pick? Well, I ended up going with the Lego one. I think the model is truly one of the most fun lego sets to date and all the included minifigs are really awesome. To deal with the studs I have opted to use Thomin bricks' mods he made (available for purchase on rebrickable: rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-179131/thomin/improved-dune-atreides-royal-ornithopter/#details). I think this really fixes almost all of my issues I had with the original lego set- less studs, removed ugly colors, better shaping to the body and a more accurate shaped and angled tail.
All original features from the lego model are still in the moded version (yes the flapping still works but the button was scaled down). One modification I plan to also make is to fit 3 figs into the cockpit which shouldnt be to hard to do...
I think both models are great and I think it really just comes down to what you like. Great video as always! 👍👍

Now that's a comment! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Carl. And I'm glad, post mods, you are happy with your Lego Ornithopter! I'm surprised that you went with that choice, given you clearly have the skills / knowledge to build the custom one, but hey it sounds like you are very happy with your end result. All the best! Simon

Hi Simon, with the newly unveiled UCS TIE Interceptor I was wondering if you would be able to convert the "old" UCS TIE Fighter into a "new" UCS TIE Fighter by taking the middle section of the TIE Interceptor and the wings of the TIE Fighter and combining them. I'd be happy to pay for the instructions and any time you put in to make it if your interested. Cheers!

Hi Lachlan, I've received a few messages asking if I could look at addressing the studded panels and fix any visible off colour parts. But I'm not sure I have the energy for it. But your idea has merit! No promises yet let me have a look at it over the weekend and think it through 🤔

@@CraftedBricks Thanks Simon! Yeah I thought it'd be a good idea to upgrade the TIE Fighter since it now looks pretty dated after the TIE Interceptor reveal. I'm keen to try my luck at it by buying two of the set on release day and reselling the gift with promos.

@majora56 - Hi again Lachlan, the more I think about this the more I like the idea. I'll need to wait till Lego release the instructions for the interceptor so I can model it all up in Studio and mod the structure to do it can lock into the Tie Fighters panels. Also no need to buy a second set, what I'll attempt is to re-use as many parts as possible from the standard Tie's cockpit so you and others who want to do the conversion only need to buy the delta of missing parts from BrickLink. 🙂

Hey Lachlan, I finished modelling up the enhanced UCS Tie Fighter with the new cockpit in Studio. It looks great! It has this 'bruiser' quality / look to it now which I love. I need to order parts from BrickLink and test the build. The wing panels needed significant internal adjustment for them to integrate with the new cockpit struts, but I've made it work and I think what I've come up with will be strong. I also need to figure out adjustments to the stand...

Been awhile. Again Lego likes to have those odd colored parts exposed with the DeLorean being the worst offender. What are your thoughts for the UCS Tie Interceptor? One review shows poly bags with...you guessed it...odd colored pcs. Save us Simon!

It has been a while, thanks as always for sharing. And your comment made me laugh! I do plan to look into the Interceptor, but I need to wait till Lego release the PDF instructions so I can use them to model the cockpit section up in Studio to properly see what's going on! If you look at Brothers Brick review and the photos posted there is certainly a lot of multi-colored parts in use, but it looks like they may be fully covered up with this build. We will see...

@@Sk8_dawg - not directly as a 'set'. You can buy the instructions from BrickVault (link in the video description). And then you will need to buy the Lego parts required from BrickLink.
