- This is the third and potentially final epsode in my series on the rise of casio, which digs deep - 30 mins plus deep! - on the array of mad and surprisingly advanced releases from Casio from 1990 to 1999 with some slight tangents and detours along the way into the history of electroluminescence and the lead up to indiglo vs. Fox Fire / Illuminator , the emergence of digital compass watches , the various Masters of G G-Shock models from the frogman to the gaussman and more , as well as the high end MR-G models. Did you know the casio had a watch in the 90s that could detect when your mobile was ringing? (Casio vivcel) Measure the force of your punches and kicks? (cybermax 300) Make avatars of your friends? (friendly memo) - watch this episode to get a taste of when casio were in their prime.

Long Live the King of Casio 90's watches and still running in 2022
I like all the Watches from CASIO
Good taste!
Absolutely unreal! I can’t imagine the research that went into this series 👏👏👏👏
I was born in 1986 so the adverts and catalog images you cut into the videos really brought back some memories. Mario from you previous video and Killer Instinct and Goldeneye from this one particularly struck a chord with me 😂
Would love to see you do the 2000s 🤞
84 for me so hits home for me too. Glad you enjoyed. The video was just an excuse to do the research ha ha. I love doing it
@@IlluminatingWatches Your love for the subject totally comes through in the videos. Phenomenal work 👏👏👏👏
I miss my first G-Shock: the 1996 DW-6700 Twin Sensor. But OK, it was not really the first of it's kind. It still was a supercool watch though. I remember seeing ads for it, flanked by the DW-6600 and the DW-6900. That's when I really got drawn to G-Shock. I got that watch for my 18th birthday and still have it.
One of my first watches was a g-shock too - although the Timex Ironman was my very first
This series made me fall in love with Casio’s even more
It’s so good and has so much info packed in I love it!
Thankyou so much! The more you look into it, the cooler the stuff you find out!
Insanely comprehensive review of the 90s Casio watches. I'm super impressed how in depth you went. Thank you so much for this video!
Thankyou so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed! You may like my other deep dives on 70s, 80s and 2000s . Finishing off one on Citizen digitals now too :)
@@IlluminatingWatches thanks I will! Happily subscribed to your channel. Great indepth analysis
Definitely want you to conclude the series! Bring in the 2000's would round the series off nicely some fascinating stuff there 👍
Thankyou!! I most likely will - need to get a feel for what is new new in that period. Radio controlled watches seems to be one…
@@IlluminatingWatches & fishing watches don't forget them.....😂 I'll send you over the one I've got if you want to use it for a video.
@@somewhereintimewatchreviews ha ha fishing watches are now my new fav. Thanks for the kind shout out on your channel!
I felt so sad when my dw403 broke down. But looking at it here brought back so many summer memories. Thank you.
Thanks for another great video.
God tier! 👑
This series is like drinking from a Casio info fire hose. Excellent work!
Ha ha that is a very good description!
Such a wonderful video!!! Amazing! Thank you!!!
Thankyou for checking out my channel!
This was a very well made video. I learned a ton! And it was super fun to watch. Thank you for making this.
My pleasure! Lots more videos where this came from!
Cássio chegando a perfeição 😅😅😅
I have been binge watching your videos the last few days, I have learned Casio made a watch for everything literally, and the features were not too far away from a standard watch so it was heavily in marketing to sell these watches. I think they got it right with the Protrek series, and hope they make even more advanced features that are actually usable in future releases. Protrek and GShock is where it is nowadays, do some more on them! Protrek please! Thanks for your hard work on these videos.
Thankyou so much!! I agree that protrek is the culmination of a lot of the coolest tech casio has to offer. Im just finishing a video on Seiko Alba which includes a section on their hyper tech range - their answer to protrek - so you may enjoy that
Wow dude! I remember the first casio protrek with triple sensor....i had one.....congratulations for the video dude!
Such a cool watch! Thanks Alexandre glad you enjoyed!
I've seen your 80's, 90's and 2000's Rise of Casio videos. If you could make a 2010's chapter, that would be so awesome. What a wonderful channel!
Thankyou so much! It’s inevitable I will make that vid. Timex digitals are next though which is taking a while and just waiting for a book to arrive. Really appreciate you watching through the vids!
Lovin’ your work here. There was a need for it on UA-cam! Keep it up!!
Very kind of you thankyou :)
These watches definitely needs to be back 😢😮
Thank you for an understanding of history, and that the history of watches and in this case what you have presented here as a part of an integrated view. All the links of history tell time too. Well done! :)
Super kind of you! I just enjoy digging into the history of stuff, so I hope it was useful for others!
@@IlluminatingWatches A mention of quantum mechanics to most people and their eyes will roll back, and yet without it none of the technology that you presented here, and its ability to be shown in this internet provided documentary would not be possible. What people don't know can be a passage to better understanding. :)
@@artemisXsidecross Really getting to the psychology of it. Casire great period.
5:26 my 1985 Citizen Ana Digi Temp has a 1/1000th second chrono. You make great videos!
High quality video and series, keep at it buddy!
Thanks man! Really glad you are enjoying it. Lots more where this came from!
Yall remember that snake game on them old Nokia phones lol, I used to have so much fun with it.
Congrats on successfully covering a bewildering range of Casios, not to mention the other brands. It would be great if you could do the final up to date instalment 👍
Thanks man! Yes there were sooooo many. Tried my best!
22:27 The Casio DW-290 is the Mission Impossible watch and the one you pictured, not the Casio W-740 though similar.
D’oh! Good pick up. Thanks for letting me know!
Great video casio has rich history I buy the new vintage casio watch from the alien film
Excellent! A really fun watch. Glad you enjoyed the video!
This series is awesome. Where did you get the catalogues? i have found some online but not many and would be great to have physical copies. Cheers!
Really glad you enjoyed. Something I often use is the wayback machine where there were some catalogs previously on forum websites but the links no longer work. I generally just went line by line with the module list which has the years of release and googled from there. The only physical thing I have is the idea book done relatively recently -> www.ideanow.online/store/The-Casio-Collection-p328848107 (you would have to be pretty mad to pay the price though!)
surfing timer looks cool
It’s a classic! So expensive to get in good condition though and relatively rare to find them
@@IlluminatingWatches saw a few on ebay or something a few years ago. almost bough it but i dont like to buy used. and the watch was not worth what they were asking for it considering its condition
@@zillsburyy1 yep I think it’s difficult to get a deal on a surf timer you would want to get unless you get it from another collector you know
I've gone down the Casio and Timex rabbithole looking for that one watch I truly liked that never made me depressed to look. I found a few, but you will waste money trying to find them. Enjoy finding them though.
It may just be that those brands aren’t for you. Who knows why we randomly connect to these things. Some of the fun is the hunt, but you need to enjoy using them too
Nice one watchy!
Thanks so much. I look forward to your continued engagement at length on my watch channel ;)
@@IlluminatingWatches hey man I’m gonna watch them all! (See what I did there?!) viva la Casio!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Green approved stamp for this comment :)
I had a watch either in the late 90s or very early 2000s. It was silver and I had to press a button to make the light and time show. I loved it and I want another. Is there any help you can give with d finding out what model it was so I can look for another ?
this is great!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Hey can u help me find out some information on this penta graph I just purchased. Where all the penta graphs I'm finding are model number "PGW-30" this one I have is literally the PGW-30 3V(pictured in the ad you showed for the watch),same turquoise bezel but instead has "PGW-92" stamped on the backplate. It's not a counterfeit as the quality is top notch. When I searched on Google the only thing that really came up was a OEM replacement strap that has "Barcelona" written on it on the spot where "100m" is written on the PGW-30 strap. So with this info I'm guessing this watch had SOMETHING to do with the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 but I can't find anything that explains it.
I have an AEGIS version of the casio dw 400 skywalker watch its my favorite
Sounds like you have some awesome watches!!
Cool😀😀😀
Enfin une mention de la alt 6000
I know I'm asking a lot, but you've done a ton of research for this. I'm having a hard time finding good info on my DW-7100. I know it's a 90's watch, but I don't know what year(s) it was produced. Do you have any info on this model?
Skywalker right? I think it’s module 913 which I think was may 1990
@@IlluminatingWatches Thanks for the reply. I have a hard time knowing what's a Skywalker and what isn't. The DW-7100 doesn't say "Skywalker" on the front but it does have some similarity to the Skywalker you have in the video here. The case shape and pushers are pretty spot on. It is a 913 module with the "rainbow" seconds.
@@randomhandle well I think that module 913 is shared between both the 7100 and 7500 and I think both were 1990. As i always say though, I’m no expert , merely a keen bean, so entirely possible I’m wrong!
Oh i wish Casio would re-release the Databankwatch style of the DBC-1500. With the lume calculator buttons. And making these buttons more long-lasting. There is simply no present Databank model that contains an EPROM which stores the Databank informations and keeps them alive even when you swap out the battery. Heck, make it a solar model too and I'd throw my money at Casio.
I love the databank passion! Go vintage . I’m sure they’ll be on eBay now. Think my next video may be on why collecting vintage digital is something people should consider.
@@IlluminatingWatches Yeah i have a vintage DBC-1500 (sadly not the one with the glowing keys) and one of the keys don't work. And it's almost too good to be worn a lot as it is my only one. I'd rather keep the vintage one preserved and wear a modern version instead :P The battery consumption of that vintage model is also pretty high, even when refrain from using the EL button a lot. The old models also don't appear often. The one i have actually came from the USA and i had to get it shipped to Germany because nobody in Germany offered one (neither did anyone in the rest of Europe.. and also not for a good price). It's nice to have an oldtimer but if you invest a lot of money for one, you don't really wanna drive it daily.
So this is the 3rd time I'm watching this and keep finding things that stand out. This time it's the pentagraph again. Only thing I don't understand is the calendar starts at 1982 if it came out in 89. Like why would they put 7 years that already happened as a selectable date
I always thought Tom Cruise wore a Casio DW290 in the first MI movie?
Pleaaaasr what is the music used AT 20:00 in the video ????
The Walter was just discontinued. :(
Boooo hopefully it comes back in a different guise
Ultraaaa
I used to own and much used a VDB-100. Until I sat on it and busted a lug off, and was no longer wearable.
Oh noooo what a shame!
17:25 Casio RPS-100 doesn't have data Bank function
Ah ok! Think I was thrown by it using the word “memo” but when I’ve checked it sounds like you are right. My bad!!
From where can I buy CPW 310 ?
Sadly I don’t have one, so ebay or someone selling on a facebook group is your best bet
👹
The number of the beast?
Why don't Casio make these kind of watches anymore? Be it in the form of G shock.
Not "thedonnie" u gotta to #thecostanza as George Costanza wore the watch better. Just wish it woulda been during his famous photo shoot
I think the main reason why some digital watches and old electronics depress me. They don't hold their value. Some of nastiest watches I ever seen are from rummage sales. Prove me wrong.
Ha well it’s definitely not about investing or even holding value . It’s purely about the personal fun. For me it’s a connectivity to my childhood and a random interest in electronics and the history of it. There is objectively no sense in this hobby!!
Who is that shouting in the background?
Good ears! That would be one of my daughters most likely. They make the occasional audio appearance
How
Big question :)
Compared to the finicky functionalities created back there, today's casios are kind of boring/simplified. Not sure this is because casio got lazy or we /most of us are lazy.
The audience of watch buyers had decresed in the last 20 years . Now people buy smartwatches . Casio would not be able to compete with the apple watch even if they tried . The 90s were different
G-shocks and big watches are almost as bad as smartwatches.
What watches do you like?
@@IlluminatingWatches Small, simple, cheap, good-looking digital watches, sometimes analogs. Timex Datalink was nice when it was out, and it wasn't scratched up. Casio A164WA-1 and the like. Timex T78587. Casio atomic watches. Small databank watches.
You mention some great watches. A personal fav of mine in that sort of category is the Casio W-59. I’ve got some videos more on vintage digital watches of Timex, Citizen, Orient etc as I’m a bit of a history buff. I’m due a review of the affordable options in the more recent catalog so hopefully there will be something of more interest for you in future .
Great information! I have a hard time w/ a lot of '90s style - but DO love the VDB. - I also had a translucent green GShock - bout 15yrs ago or so.
Thanks man. I’m glad we dug one Casio watch out of the 500 or so modules that you like ha ha
@@IlluminatingWatches LOL You've seen my collection. So prob not a surprise hehe. There are tons of 80s pieces I dig, but for some reason most 90s pieces don't do it for me :/ But I do love learning about them, and seeing the diff ideas and designs.
@@IlluminatingWatches I DID love my transluc green and transluc orange GShocks I had LOONG tho! Sad they apparently had dead batteries in em too long oslt.
