- 80s digital watches has been a favourite of my viewers, so to celebrate 5k subscribers I thought doing a broader review of the whole period of 80s digitals from Casio, Seiko, Citizen and more would be a fun one. I’ve used the inspiration of the classic 80s :”Now that’s what I call music” compilation albums as a theme for the video, with each different type of watch representing a track on the list. We will cover Ana-digi watches, sports watches, nerdy calculator and computer watches, early sensor watches, melody alarms, (su-su-susudio ) pseudo-analogs the rise of the g-shock and many more. Lots of fun making this one and weaving in plenty of 80s references. I hope you enjoy the video!
Track 1: Wake me up before you go-go 0:40
Track 2: Best of Both Worrlds 02:15
Track 3: Su-su Pseudo analog 04:37
Track 4: Running up that hill 07:08
Track 5: Computer Love 12:09
Track 6: Pac-man Fever 14:06
Track 7: Sharp dressed man 16:42
Track 8: Walkin’ on Sunshine 18:23
Track 9: Its raining men 19:15
Track 10: When the going gets tough (the tough get going) 21:02
A particularly relevant resource was Pierre Doyon’s excellent scans of the various Casio catalogues (from the Casio Vintage Facebook Group). Newspaper clippings were largely using my subscription to newspapers.com - Навчання та стиль
If you enjoyed this one, I’m pretty sure you would enjoy my video on the history of digital watch tech development from its origins, through to today -> ua-cam.com/video/oiUIYDQOH8A/v-deo.html
The best watch channel on UA-cam by a mile
Thankyou! The appreciation makes it worth the effort!
I definitely agree with you ! I look for these gems once I began following this channel
How to annoy a whole class in the 1980's. Alarms.
Especially the teacher ;)
😂
What a fantastic summarization of the good old 80's. 👍 The Video is going back about half a century but by watching it feels like walking right into the future. It's stunning what technology was developed decades ago, you would never presume - great work 👍👍👍
I hope you never run out of content, as your videos are GOLD !!
Don’t worry - more ideas for videos than I could do in a lifetime
Fantastic video! Love your channel. Lots of these I'm lucky to say are in my collection
i have seen some of these Citizens for sale! Didnt know they had such a huge influence on digitals... Now they are even cooler! Thanks for sharing Gordon!
Nice one. A good trip down memory lane for me.
Man, I'd kill to have some of these watches.
Also, i love your content, i didn't think I'd find a good digital watch enthusiast channel, but here we are.
Me too!! Really glad to hear I’m helping scratch that digital watch content itch. vintage digital watches channel is great and much more knowledgable than me - just wish he’d post more!
This is quickly becoming my favourite channel... And my mechanical watches are starting to gather some dust 😊. I just wish your videos were longer! Maybe I'll just play them at half speed...
You are far too kind! Not many people would watch me for 40 minutes. I do go quite fast though!!
I love seeing the Timex Atlantis get some love, it's weird that it's so forgotten given it's still around...
Will always get love from me! I would love one of the solid metal ones from back in the day
@Illuminating Watches by the time I was wearing them, they had already switched to resin. Maybe Timex will reissue a steel version like they have done with the T80.
The Casio Amw-320 "Arnie" was briefly shown in this video, featuring the module 358. That module was everywhere for almost 30 years.
Looks like Sylvester Stallone wore it too! Hadn’t known that!
@@IlluminatingWatches Being worn by both of the rival macho men of the 80s is quite an achievement.
As a child of the 70s and 80s i remember my love of watches starting with the emergance of more affordable digital watches becoming available and kids at school having them ( i remember a brand called Beltime being popular). But because they were still more expensive i had Sekonda mechanical wind up watches. I actually remember purposely overwinding a sekonda in thr hope my parents would get me a digital watch
Ha yes beltime! An Argos classic!
Most entertaining. Your videos are always interesting. The subject matter is pretty unique in the world of You Tube.
Thankyou! It’s sort of evolved over time to end up like this! Times ticking do some histories too, so is probably the closest thing
I was a kid in the 80's there are so many watches in this video I remember. I had a Timex Ironman and a Timex analog/digital but I don't remember the model. I always wanted the Casio with the thermometer but never got one. Great video.
Lovvvve the Timex Ironman triathlon. That was my first watch . I was an 84 baby so watches I had were more 90s
Another great video. Really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Thankyou so much! You’ve been a great supporter of the channel!
Big fan of the world map by Seiko... Nice video, the 80 watches are or ugly or iconic. Thanks gor the video
Thankyou! I’m a lover of the ugly and the beautiful - all play a part in the story of the technology! Always a pleasure!
Best 23 minutes I've spent in 2023
What a lovely comment! Really glad you enjoyed!
Worth it alone for the “ Live Without a Net “ footage;)
Ha ha I was just proud of the best of both worlds reference for ana-digi !
@@IlluminatingWatches Rightly so;)
How you don't have at least 100k subs is beyond me, amazing video as always!
Far too kind! Not the largest community of folks interested in crazy fast paced commentaries of digital watch history, but those that like it like it!
OMG what a blast from the past forgotten how many watches I've owned. I've had about 15 of the watches you've featured in this video! 🙂👍
Ha well if you had saved them they would probably be worth a bit now!
@Illuminating Watches yeah I wish! 🤣👍
Your content is awesome, I loved these digital watches when I was a kid and to find a channel talking about them in detail is a gem
Thankyou so much! That made my day!
Great video! Thanks! ;-)
Thankyou!
So much memories... And great info clip, keep up the good work bro ⌚
Thankyou! Much appreciated 🙏
Thank you for another amazing video. You are truly one of my favorite channels and I always get excited when I see a new video from you. Thank you for all your hard work with doing the research and producing the videos. I appreciate it so much, your videos bring me joy to say the least. Thanks again!
Oh wow Thankyou! That made my day. Makes it totally worth it when people appreciate!
Awesome video!
It's also worth mentioning that the seiko G757 was also used in the game Metal Gear Solid V the phantom Pain, and with the popularity of the watch after the release, it saw a re-release under the brand name "Wired" (a seiko subsidiary).
Thank you for the great video & researches, wonderful and tasteful content as usual.
Absolutely! One of my fav video game watches
Nice video thanks ;)
A pleasure! Glad you enjoyed
Cosmophase 7.10....😂 Fantastic vid, loved the tanks and those Rotocalls, they came up before didn't they?
Ha ha especially for you that one
Thanks for informing me that what I have been looking for is called a "pseudo-analog" watch, because of this managed to find a Citizen 9600 which I'm very happy with :) Edit: there is something funny about using a digital display to mimic older technology... this is called a skeuomorph. Hereby I propose to call them skeuomorphic watches from now one, that's all for me thanks
1:06 That melody in the background sounds so familiar.... 😄 Great video, my friend!
Ha ha yes I may have sneakily recorded that one ;) hope you don’t mind!!
@@IlluminatingWatches You "may" have? 😄 I do not mind at all. It gave me a good chuckle when I heard it.
We all need a Yacht Timer
We all need a yacht
100% most critical item
@@LaurentiusTriarius obviously I’ve got one … or else why would I own a yacht timer….
I bought a w753 because i use a timer for studying. Didnt know that it was a Yacht Timer until I read the manual. What was it even used for?
You did a lot of research man
Thankyou! This is the result of research I’ve done on multiple other videos about the 80s
aw fuck yeeah i love your videos!! refreshing content after seeing all the 38 tiffany seiko 5s.
Aw thanks! Very glad I’ve provided something a bit different and you are enjoying!
@Illuminating Watches dude I share your vids with anyone who wants an Apple iwatch. I'm like, don't do that, look at all the history and wonderful options that we have.
@@winstonlanda7731 I’m so happy to hear that!! Thankyou for spreading the word of my little channel.
@Illuminating Watches Please don't stop making these videos dude. You're an important part of underrated watches in the community.
I think casio need to do a lot of reissue of his old watch because they were realy inovador and creative at the begining
Right ! But the same goes for Seiko, Citizen and Timex.
The golden age of digital watchmaking... wish several of these were in production today. By the way, Casio will release this year the LF-20W as a successor to the old Twin Graph.
Yes I saw that. Very cool! I wish they did it with the graphics on the strap though like the originals though. Love that they are doing some cool re-issues anyway
Hi, big fan of your videos. I saw you have got an autodromo group c. Can you make a video ? Nobody talks about it, i think this is a very nice watch. Cheers, Al
Thankyou so much! I very briefly cover it in my driving digitals video. It’s unlikely I’ll do a review style video as I don’t tend to do those (I hate to think people would buy something based upon me liking it as my opinions are very biased to my own tastes). I love the watch as I’m a mad digital watch lover , but objectively it’s definitely not worth the price tag !
I never wore digital watches growing up in the 80s. I guess it was just too popular and ubiquitous during that time and I really snobbed hard against it. I much preferred the look of analog displays back then. But it was digital watches that resparked my love for watches a few years back... I guess I got swept up with everyone else in the nostalgia for the 80s! 😅 And nothing symbolises the 80s more than digital watches!
I was an 84 birthday so digital watches were a big part of my childhood - especially my Timex Ironman Triathlon. If only we’d kept hold of some of them in good condition - we’d be rich!!
If you really have a thin wrist and you are looking for the features and look of a GW-M5610......buy a BGD-5000. Only you'll miss out on is the AEL.
I remember the vox watch
I believe it was at radio shack. We had Tandy here in the UK
@@IlluminatingWatches I live in the UK too - do you remember the old Maplin catalogue covers?
Oooooh yes! I need to look and see if there is an archive of those .
Are there any makers of internals of digital watches as those are the Achilles heels of these. Thanks
Indeed this is a problem with collecting vintage digitals. You are reliant on donor modules and knowing people who are good at fixing things.
Dw-500c only gshock with 100 m water resistant.
Knowledge! I want one but they all seem to be in a poor state
What about a series on the watches in resident evil..
I’ve done a video about watches in games , but weirdly enough didn’t do resident evil. I’ll check them out
@@IlluminatingWatches the original movie has loads. Watched it again today. Some nice close-up shots as well.
Will definitely check out then!
these manufacturers should bring them back
Agreed! But I also enjoy the fun of hunting down old models
Why do these watches have so much more color and character compared to modern offerings? Casios LF20 reissue felt like them trying to put out a watch with the least effort possible.
Did they get better at cost cutting or something
Умели же раньше делать..
Good but to fast!!!
