Bawling my eyes out. I remember June 17, 2001 and hearing this for the first time..they should've released this albumn..Damn I miss the old days..It will NEVER be the same without Roi and BT.
Song saved me from myself a few times. "So, don't lose your heaven Don't convince yourself you're done Just 'cause the things around you seem heavy Doesn't mean you can't get off this ground"
Even though he's just mumbling through some of the lyrics, this version of Grey Street is probably my favorite DMB song ever. Something....emotional, I guess, just captures me about this one in particular.
The Lillywhite Sessions were basically just a demo tape. That's why there is all of the mumblng that DMB fans love so much! I remember hearing this demo album for the first time back in 2001. I was on my way to see DMB in Charlotte, NC with a friend of mine. We listened to that CD the whole way to and from the concert!
For sure, production (and having finished lyrics) is obviously important, but I think Dave and the band were just in a special headspace on these sessions that couldn't really be replicated. Which, to me at least, is why the Busted Stuff album sounds so hollow.
Interesting... I went back and read all the reasons this album was scrapped, etc. It was 2001 and at a time when illegal downloading was hot, but not altogether taboo. A friend gave me this Lillywhite album, as a I was really into Dave and it was a sorta time in your life when you can't wait for an artist to drop a new album. (Today, I'm kinda bleh about most things new)... But you know that feeling, when you're younger? Anyhow, everyone had their reason to scrap the album and forge something different. I heard JTR and Grey Street and was totally floored; it was awesome! I think this Grey Street is pretty cool because it is almost "unfinished", or less refined. The later version sounds a bit forced for words (especially after hearing this earlier version), and I like the violin part at the end to round it out. All the songs though... Apparently, things were just a bit out of sorts for DMB. I later learned this song on guitar, and still sing the Lillywhite version. Not that it changed much for me. I went to a lot of Dave shows since then. I guess it's just been a long time between then and now, when the internet consisted of waiting for a download for hours. :) A pointless story, maybe. Maybe just a wine reminiscence. :)
I definitely prefer the hook "on Grey Street" to "It breaks her heart." Also, the melody during the ending part is more prominent but doesn't take away from Carter's drums.
idk man I loved Busted Stuff, I feel like it had a lot of staples and it was the band in its prime in terms of popularity. I mean, thats just me talking though
i like the instruments and effects (?) in this version, but I like the new lyrics (Busted stuff minus the last verse [how he performed on Vegas w/tim])
dave is not "faking it" in this version at all, he actually put more feeling into the LWS version and the versions he played when grey street was first being preformed. and the lyrics are better in this version than most except some early live versions
This was the version I got on some program like Limewire back in when I was in middle school. Lol, it went on many a burned CD... very happy to find it again. This is definitely the best version of this song.
Alex Riesz I have to say that I wasnt a big fan of "Everyday," as well. I guess it was a little too "overproduced" for my taste. DMB has always been about jamming, playing what you feel, improvisational, just playing music. Dave playing an acoustic guitar...not an electric one! Every album up to "Everyday" is just amazing. As for "Busted Stuff," it was ok, I was just a bigger fan of The Lillywhite Sessions, myself. This song here, it is just a demo, full of Dave's "air-filled mumbles," as I always called them, him improvising and just letting go. I love this version of Grey Street, even though it isn't a finished product.
This version is so much better, the lyrics are brilliant, "take what you can from your dreams-make it real as anything-it takes the work out of the courage" my favorite lyrics ever

Boyd was a sock sniffing creep unfortunately 😂
Not a huge DMB fan but I don't know why they scrapped this version of Grey Street...so intense, so well played by the entire band.
I know…it’s my favorite version 😫
Song saved me from myself a few times.
"So, don't lose your heaven
Don't convince yourself you're done
Just 'cause the things around you seem heavy
Doesn't mean you can't get off this ground"
Yes !!!!
"How did it end like this?"
Coming from childhood trauma from my dad, this song hit sooooo hard...I was 21..I'm now 44 and it still hits hard
I’ve just found this after 10 years. I uploaded the videos a while ago. I am humblemonkey1. Or at least I was. I’m amazed these videos are still here
Hi dad
This is where DMB faltered. They should have released the lillywhite sessions.
The summer so far
I'm still here, in 2020, from France. Long live to DMB !
So many great memories with this album

Honestly it was all downhill after this.

Once upon a time I could run a mile on a treadmill before this song ended. Haters gonna hate but the cadence exactly matches a 5:45 mile.
3:05 Stefan starts rocking out!
The bass on this song and Bartender is seriously unparalleled. These versions are just incomparably better than the Busted Stuff versions...
So good.
YES!!!! THIS IS THE ONE I WAS LOOKING FOR! PAISE THE DMB GODS!
I love this version of the song
if there was one song in the world i most wish i had written.......
I like it much better then the Busted Stuff version
3:02 - 3:05 best drum fill ever
I fucking love that fill.
Carter is the fucking man.
carter has some of the best cymbal work of all time
I definitely prefer the hook "on Grey Street" to "It breaks her heart." Also, the melody during the ending part is more prominent but doesn't take away from Carter's drums.

This is the best version hands down!
This version of the song is simply amazing.

What an exhale of a note….4:51-5:06!
Best version! So beautifully sad
This song is like sex...
The last 60 seconds are the best
1:36 RIP LEROI

Summer so far
Dear dad,
Listen to this song…
This was the version I got on some program like Limewire back in when I was in middle school. Lol, it went on many a burned CD... very happy to find it again. This is definitely the best version of this song.
I love this version! Dave is a God.....
i love stephans improv at the chorus..
first time I heard this song in 10 yrs. wow. Amazing stuff
original grey street rules
I think I like this version better than the one on Busted Stuff, I am not even a big Dave Matthews Band fan but I do love this song
Why does this sound slowed down?
@800adam008 I found a notebook of mine from that era and I had written those same lyrics on the cover, only those, probably to inspire me.
I think I like this version more than the version they actually released
Best version of this song
A complexidade da música é sempre um algo
this is their best sounding recordings
This is the original.
Thank, YOU 2024
Yo, what is this. This was my favorite song, but this doesn’t even have the same meaning as the original. Dave what?
This is the original
FAV SONG!
@CharvakaJim me too
Great Quality!
By far the best version. Do NoT at me
@livinlifexx You would pick the song about universal love to be the one you hate. Ironic.
🚗💨On Grey Street!!Love it!!
Wow, there is a real difference between the two songs!
@MrGuitarNut41 i respect your opinion but i still say everyday was their worst album and should not have even been released

Your name is xbox. Nuff said.
This version is so much better, the lyrics are brilliant, "take what you can from your dreams-make it real as anything-it takes the work out of the courage" my favorite lyrics ever
@Phyre112 Agreed
Is it just me, or is Leroi playing the whole thing with a soprano sax in this version?
