- Welcome to the Off-Season Series™.
Now that the MLS, USL, NWSL and College Soccer seasons are all but done, I am teaming up with top level goalkeepers to bring you guys some quality content. My primary goal is to help them improve and stay sharp in their off-seasons, while also offering an inside look into my training and philosophies.

In todays episode,
I am working with Jake Fenlasson from Saint Louis Fc and Jacob Huber who is the starter for Cal State San Bernardino.
I put together this session with quality over quantity in mind. At the beginning of the session, I put Jake and Jacob through footwork activation sets. This allowed them to get familiar with calculated movements they'd be dealing with later on in the session. The main objective of the session was for them to become more calculated and cerebral with their footwork. I.e. which foot does what when approaching their dive. They got a ton of reps and as you'll see later on in the session, their attention to detail needed to be doubled as they became fatigued. It's important to test both our bodies and our minds in training, so that you're capable of adapting to any and all situations in games.

Semi-pro keeper here, been at an elite academy, played college in the states, got to say your tekkers and service is extremely good. I have been watching a lot of the videos recently to get some fresh ideas, loving them! Also would absolutely love to train with you, miss training every day!

I love his videos! Taught me a lot of skills.
I felt that the GK without the hat was a little bit flat footed at times,too much weight on the heels as opposed to the balls of his feet. I try to get GKs to get their chin over their laces or toes so as to keep their body weight slightly forward and to prevent keeping to much weight behind.

I think it's because he stays at the market until the ball is hit so he knows exactly where he has to dive to
Hey Omar, another question on an old video from me. Sorry just curious again. I noticed one of your GKs in this video habitually bounces the ball after he catches it when it's delivered straight to him. This is something I used to do a lot because I wasn't confident in my own catching ability. My coach at the time I was learning eventually coached this out of me because it has the possibility of going wrong, hitting your feet or spinning away from you etc. In fact I saw exactly that happen to the GK in this video.
Just wondering why you don't mention this to your GK? Is this more a personal preference thing for coaches? I had always imagined it was more of a factual thing. Anyway just curious, thanks for reading / answering!

Can already tell where you are based on the orange ball, I’m an hour south? How can I get into contact with you? Also talk about that CA weather just breaking thru over marine layer as day passes
in the drill around 25:00, both keepers could get across so much quicker and increase their diving momentum/reach if they used the cross step
The focus of the session was to work on calculated footwork and have that footwork lead to good body stability and shape. So while I agree that a cross-step would increase their diving momentum and reach (when used in the correct scenario), it would have caused them to run into the save instead of squaring up and having proper shape when making the save.
So in short, there will be days where we do focus on cross stepping but this session wasn't one of them.
After the change in direction, there is only a short distance to cover before making the subsequent save. Additionally, there is a very short amount of time between the change in direction and the save. The cross step definitely WOULD increase speed across the goal, but in reality, it would be likely that the goalkeeper would still be cross stepping, or in the very least unbalanced when the shot is being struck. The cross step is a great option when covering a relatively large distance or/and when there is enough time to get set after cross stepping - therefore ineffective in the context/practice at 25:00

Been trying to get some women to come out but it's been tough with the holidays!
Also, the sun unfortunately gets in the way of the camera, so it's tough to reposition/change camer angles. But I'll work on it.
