I really wish that Planeswalkers could have kept the immortality bit. Not necessarily all the phenomenal godlike powers, and I like that they can be put in mortal peril, but I really liked Urza Planeswalker's Doctor Who impression in the Lynn Abby book, one of my all-time favorite MTG stories (the other being the Brother's War book).
This story is so important to the multiverse but is known by very few inexperience and young players like myself. I hope this little series helps me get a better understanding. Thanks for doing this Seiben
btw, i would totaly watch a 90 min seiben lore mending movie, with 20 min bonus material and 3 weeks later the spetial extended edition with 120 min, 40 min bonus material and a 30 min making of with commentary ^^
I actually think that the way we have it now it perfect. With planeswalkers being nerfed down but the lore of oldwalkers existing and their impact on the world still existing. Many good fantasy stories are run in worlds that have an epic past and right now mtg is such. For instance. it is really cool that the time when Nahiri, Sorin and Ugin were oldwalkers is part of the story of SOI and EMN but only as a mythic background that can never be reached again. Sorin can't make another Avacyn again nor create another hellvault. Nahiri can't just cast Armageddon on innistrad the way Sorin feared she could in the past.
Because Karona came into existence AFTER the true death of Yawgmoth at the hands of Urza, it's speculated that the Yawgmoth that Karona encounters is either from an alternate timeline or was a manifestation of the black mana within her influenced by Yawgmoth's corpse on Dominaria.
Well the Uborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is still powerfull and the same way Nicol Bolas was just a ghost in the first Time Spiral novel could be achivable by others to.
One drop, 4 basic loyalty counters, his ultimate being a -5. He'd be ridiculous, but imagine Nissa Revane in an elf deck. She'd have some +2 ability towards her ult
I would love to see how Dominaria has fared since the Mending. As great and as awesome as the Planeswalkers of the Pre-Mending age were, the era of Time Spiral was some pretty scary stuff from a story perspective. It should be remembered as a cautionary tale of the dangers that come with being a Planeswalker and the damage that their hubris can cause; important for anyone that calls the Multiverse home. I, for one, want to see more of this.
From a story perspective it makes a lot of sense, stories about all powerful beings that could make their own planes like Serra give pre-mending planeswalkers a Superman complex. Also it was used in order to make planeswalkers fit into the game with them being true to character without being overpowered.
I love hearing about this, since I actually played, prior to the time spiral block (When the mending accured) and through the block. So I too, also know about it. I can't wait to hear more either way, I love the nostalgia like this!
I would like to know more about this part of the MTG Universe, specially regarding to Urza. Those massively powerfull planeswalkers and the original Phyrexian Invasion are my favourite part of the Lore (at least what I know of it)
mending the mini movie would be good. as well as lore on nicol and ugan and some of the older plainswalkers that were around pre mending and how the mending affected them
There are much better stories to be told about post-Mending walkers than pre-Mending. They're more relatable and less like gods (not the Theros variety). In the original fluff, Old Walkers didn't die in a fight, they just were forced to run away. I love Superman. Superman stories are fun and entertaining, because they're all about what Clark would or wouldn't do while following his code and asking tough questions. He can do anything, essentially, but the question is whether he would do it. But not all comic book heroes should be like Superman. Newer Walkers are much more like adventurers who are thrust into danger, who can't just run away because of who they are, and they can't just obliterate most threats. Their problems can't just be eradicated by wiping out a plane or two, or destroying continents. But they do have the option of being fully engaged in choice, since a post-Mending Walker always has one option that no one else in the Multiverse has: They can run away. So for a Walker to define themselves, they have to do what they aren't made to. That's an interesting tension.
Agreed but disagreed. As long as these characters are written well it's okay for them to be hard to relate to. Making them more and more human is definitely okay as well, but only because it makes them easier to write for. Obviously having almighty characters like pre-mending walkers and Superman takes the tension out of many possible scenarios, where the concern is for the almighty character. But the physical predicaments of these characters are not really what I'm focused on, and like you said for Superman the appeal to the story has to come from somewhere else. But the meat and bones of the story can really be anything - especially when it comes to god-like characters like these. Maybe it's just me, but I find that a lot more intriguing. Though I do like a good dose of mortal peril - especially in the shadows of those gods.
I would doubt that. You have him in many of the novels. He is in the mending story of the time spiral novel, plays a major role in Alara Unbroken as the one who brings the shards back together and he is a major caracter in Agent of Artifice. He is also mentioned in some of the others for example Scars of Mirrodin, where his Agent Tezzeret undermines the phyrexians by his order. And he is the one that killed Ugin. So saying there is to little lore about him is inacurate, rather its so much it would fill a 40 min video, which as Selben said in the beginning would be to long.
Would like to see more rifts or other analogous catastrophies thay wreck the multiverse and refocus the story on Dominaria, Nicol Bolas, and the Phyrexians. I want to see the new planeswalkers battle the forces of Phyrexia or go head on against the machinations of Nicol Bolas
There are controversies over her meeting with Yawgmoth. Since he was long dead from being hit with the Legacy weapon. Her audience were allegedly a mix of actual individuals and manifestations she conjured up (Yawgmoth in particular) and she was mad before the event since she was composed of three different entities to begin with. Well that's what I've heard on the matter.
I do still wish planeswalkers still had their pre mending power. I just read Agents of Artifice: a planeswalker novel. In it, Nicol Bolas tells Jace,"We used to be gods." The story could be vastly more expansive than it is with planeswalkers still being gods.
The Mending resulted in weaker planeswalkers, which tipped the balance of power in favor of the Eldrazi. I mean think about it, if Jace, Gideon, Chandra, Kiora, and Nissa possessed infinite mana Zendikar would have been cleared of Eldrazi before we even blinked. Pre mending, 3 planeswalkers were able to contain all 3 Eldrazi. They had some set up, but the battle was fairly quick, showing absolute domination of the titans. That means each of those three had, at least, the power of an Eldrazi titan. During the Battle for Zendikar, not only did 5 planeswalkers congregate to stop the titans, they had the wrath of nature and the combined forces of every major civilization at their back. That's probably double the combined power of the three titans. Unity against a dominating godly power? Please, Emrakul would have been slain before she left the plane. Eldritch Moon would be even more lopsided. Remember, a single planeswalker has the aproximate power of an Eldrazi titan. Lilliana possesses a planeswalker artifact and is on a plane that is literally a gigantic cemetery. By the time Jace returned with the rest of the Gatewatch Emrakul would already have been enslaved by Lily's necromancy. Or Jace could have mind controlled Avacyn and cleansed her himself
Yeah that would be cool. An Urza or Yagmothplaneswalker card would be cool and massivly overpowered. Or Yavimaya who would make Nissa look like a baby in comparison. Or any of the 8 that entered Phyrexia during the Invasion cycle.
DiamondLogiX Well concluding the theory from the novel Planeswalker in the Artifice Cycle, Planeswalkers are the only ones, that can keep the mana balance of a plane at a mono. So they set it up, that phyrexia is the same as Serras plane. So its something proven, that Yawgmoth is a planeswalker or something similar powerful. like an Eldrazi, or Grizelbrand.
He was a planeswalker, he was a god who became an even greater god to Phyrexia (Hail Phyrexia) and his ruthlessness went beyond any planeswalkers image, as in, a plane made out of pure white mana fell to death because of him, he was a monster compared to what the hell we're seeing these days ... Nahiri trying to end Innistrad? Bola's power hungry attitude? Those are nothing compared to how deadly he was, it took Urza's entire life to try to end his reign, and then Urza went missing
As someone who has read The Thran, Yawgmoth wasn't a planeswalker. He wanted to be, but never got it. He would often dissect planeswalkers to try to figure out what made them so powerful so that he could graft it into himself. The reason he was a god was because the plane choose him to be it's new master. His power came from the plane alone.
there is a question that really makes me think... could there have been a plane that could escape from the mending? it's unlikely. but could there be a plane that is not Connected to the Nexus? one so old and unreachable that not even the mending could match it. I am obsessed with the plane Equilor, and if such mending-unscathed plane exists, it's highly likely to be Equilor.
Now I'm at the start, so maybe there is something that is going to counter this... but I'm going to bet Dominaria is where Emrakul poofed off to XD (again, within the first three minutes, and there is much lore to get through)
Headcanon: The mending didn't change the nature of the planeswalker spark, instead the power that the planeswalkers have is continually drained by the closed rifts to keep the multiverse stable.
cool idea, but to me it always seemed like the mending spell rewrote reality. The Mending influenced a lot more things then just the Mana supply of Planeswalkers.
What I'd really like to see is the interactions between Pre-Mending Walkers and Post-Mending Walkers, sans Nicol Bolas. Urza meets Sorin? Yes please. XD An argument on what defines the phrase 'for the greater good' XD Or Leshrac meets Liliana. Even Baron Sengir meets Sorin.
I wish they didn't kill off or depower so many pre-mending planeswalkers. I actually started to write what if? articles about them and how they could fit into the modern storylines
They kind of had to so they could make cards out of them. They wanted the planeswalkers to be their mascot. The "Drive to Work" podcast episode on planeswalkers explains why. It's also a really interesting podcast about the behind the scenes design process.
+bait668 Maybe the eldrazi are to manage the flow of mana or act as natural enemy's to those god like plains walker. Maybe the eldrazi are the exact opposite of the walkers. don don da!
Couldn't a planeswalker or other person reach pre-mending level or higher strength by obtaining other's sparks and using their power to further their own, kinda seems to me that Nikol Bolas might be doing something similar to this with him mind controling and enslaving power planeswalkers like Tezzeret to his will.
I joke around with MtG players by telling them I am a Phyrexian Sleeper Agent. ( Have a artificial Hip and a Spinal Stimulator.) So can I have a moment of your time to tell you of the reason why you should give up your weak organic body and be completed just as I?
as long as planswalkers are our main character i like they dont have limitless powers but even urza as a premending planswalkers could not fix all his problems alone
Planeswalkers in the story being powerful again would be cool, but playing with them in card form would be a nightmare. They are hard enough to get rid of as it is already.
Nicol Bolas, Liliana, Karn, Teferi, Ugin, Sorin, and Nahiri are all pre-mending planeswalkers still around. Venser was a planeswalker before the mending, but he ascended to only post mending power just before the mending, as was Radha (but she sacrificed her spark to fix one of the rifts).
Personally, I don't have a problem with reigning in the planeswalkers' overall power. However, I think things would be more interesting if, every once in a while a planeswalker would ignite the with POTENTIAL to be like the godlike planeswalkers or becoming a planeswalker would still convey certain benefits outside (longevity, increased resilience and magical defenses) of being able to planeswalk, just not godlike power.
Dragon wars PLZZZ... But I think I prefer the more focused approach that WotC takes to their story know: often killing off and adding new planeswalkers to make things more interesting than "Phyrexians invaded. Urza blew them up. Phyrexians rebuilt. Phyrexians invaded. Urza blew them up. Slivers happened."
I don't like planeswalker cards so I'm biased but I would prefer godlike powers. I don't think they should be as focused upon in lore as they are. I love the lore that explores new characters and deep concepts more than chronicles of phenomenal deeds and simple conflict.
more long vids man , also we still have those plainswalkers us the players are those walkers able to use magic from any plain of our chooseing me for example I use magic from tarkir ravnica alara and theros mostly aligned with red and white magic as it was my into to the multiverse though I am well versed in all five colors in that way the mending did not really affect us but lore wise it was devastating and I would say sarkkon vol did not help matters meddling in time as he did I look forword to the rest of these videos as I enjoy learning more about the greater multiverse
My head canon is that while normal mages are able to extend their lives drastically, only Planeswalkers are able to become fully immortal.
Yeah I miss immortal Planeswalkers :( like poor Nahiri is probably going to die very soon
Seiben, I would watch The Mending:The Movie
seconded
thirded
+Ty-zaan44 fourthed
fifths
+orrick7 sixthed
This story is so important to the multiverse but is known by very few inexperience and young players like myself. I hope this little series helps me get a better understanding. Thanks for doing this Seiben
That the breaker of Dominaria is called Corona is unreal
btw, i would totaly watch a 90 min seiben lore mending movie, with 20 min bonus material and 3 weeks later the spetial extended edition with 120 min, 40 min bonus material and a 30 min making of with commentary ^^
GirlPainting WoW, didn’t know that you likes Magic Alexandra. I’m a suscriber

wizards needs to make a from the vault featuring cards of planeswalkers whom never had a card before.
URZA!!! Seriously though, from the vault never consists of original cards. They are exclusively reprint sets.
Moder horizons has Serra in it
They have...
"It all began on Dominaria."
Doesn't everything in this game?
i realize Im pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Chaim Ricardo Flixportal xD
@Callan Kellan Thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !
@Chaim Ricardo happy to help :)
0:49 I've watched a 5 hours video on the Marvel Civil War Storyline, I think I can manage a 40 minute MTG video.
Really been wanting a video on this. Couldn't really find any, so I'm super glad you're doing this!
I just watched a 3 minute ad for the purple mattress cover... totally worth it
can you imagine a pre-mendding tibalt? he would have been a 1 drop
One drop, 4 basic loyalty counters, his ultimate being a -5. He'd be ridiculous, but imagine Nissa Revane in an elf deck. She'd have some +2 ability towards her ult
Fortunately he didn't even exist pre-mending. Now if you want to get scary imagine a pre-mending Yawgmoth Father Of Machines.
Victor Valdez You wanna get broken? Get Urborg as All lands are all land types in addition to their basic.
+Victor Valdez how about Nicol Bolas?
Nicol Bolas is a pre mending walker if I'm not mistaken
so glad you've started a series on the mending I've heard of it heaps on your episodes good to know that side of the lore
This is something that I've been GREATLY interested in, I'm so glad so see this. I can't wait for more on the mending, keep up the good work!
Dude, thank you! I remember requesting this on one of your last videos so the timing of this video could not be any better
Oh I have been waiting for these videos for quiet some time. Can't wait to hear the in depth story.
I would love to see how Dominaria has fared since the Mending. I, for one, want to see more of this.
You should make "The Mending: The Mini Movie" when you finish this series.
A 40+ minute video by Seiben about MTG lore? Yes please!!!
I'd watch it. I'd also be down for a 1 hour movie on Ravnica lore.
The Archive of Ruin I agree.
From a story perspective it makes a lot of sense, stories about all powerful beings that could make their own planes like Serra give pre-mending planeswalkers a Superman complex. this is the video series I've been waiting for
Great video looking forward to nicol bolas. I've been waiting for a series like this for a long while. Thank you
So happy your doing this😄😄😄, can't wait for more
I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this series
Just 3 days ago I searched for this bit of lore on youtube to play in the background without any results. Are you magic?
One of the most interesting parts of the mtg lore it feels like its my birthday oh wait it is thx mate made my day
The best lore you did Seiben ;)
Well at least Dominaria figured out how to defeat Corona.
This is Great! Keep em coming fast :)
You might find this surprising , but i enjoy the longer videos more :D
Same I want every little detail and I don't mind watching 1 hour long videos
Agreed
I would like to know more about this part of the MTG Universe, specially regarding to Urza. Those massively powerfull planeswalkers and the original Phyrexian Invasion are my favourite part of the Lore (at least what I know of it)
cant wait to see the rest of this!
I have been waiting for this video, I really wanted to do one myself.
This was a great introduction into the mending, and I agree, there too much info for on video. I look forward to the others.

i prefer old walker stories. plus, it would lead the way for stories that aren't always planeswalker focused

Still waiting for that Nicol Boals lore video
Maybe we'll get it soon he is from Dominaria, after all as were his four brothers. He loved his brothers ... they were delicious.
yes we need that
Their isn't enough lore on him to tell a decent story yet. Sieben has explained this several times yet still you don't grasp it:/
I would doubt that. +scott Evil Yes, but we dont know much about his origin, motivation, or personality (other then he is a power hungry bully).
I liked it, awesome work again!
I would love even just one pre-mending story of a battle between two walkers. I bet it would have been badass.
There is one nickel bolus vs Ugon The spirit dragon his Brother they were both pre-mending plaswalkers
Yeah gonna need more of these!
"People don't have the time to sit and watch a mini movie on the mending"
Me: Hold my cards.
awesome! can't wait for more!
I enjoy the amount of times you say "multiverse" in this video haha. I lost count but it's at least ten times!
I do still wish planeswalkers still had their pre mending power. I just read Agents of Artifice: a planeswalker novel. In it, Nicol Bolas tells Jace,"We used to be gods." The story could be vastly more expansive than it is with planeswalkers still being gods.
Meanwhile in Dominaria:"Thank the god!. No more planeswalker shenanigans."
Yes! Please do a Karona lore video!!
I would like to watch a feature film about any MTG topic. Make it happen please!
can you go over some of the legendary creatures from dominaria? like the samurai lord who defeated nicol bolas in god form?
I would like to see some longer vids every once in awhile
The Mending resulted in weaker planeswalkers, which tipped the balance of power in favor of the Eldrazi. I mean think about it, if Jace, Gideon, Chandra, Kiora, and Nissa possessed infinite mana Zendikar would have been cleared of Eldrazi before we even blinked.

I miss lot old plainwalker that never got a card
Yeah that would be cool. An Urza or Yagmothplaneswalker card would be cool and massivly overpowered. Or Yavimaya who would make Nissa look like a baby in comparison. Or any of the 8 that entered Phyrexia during the Invasion cycle.
I don't think Yawgmoth actually had a planeswalker spark, he was taken to another plane (that became phyrexia) by a planeswalker.
DiamondLogiX Well concluding the theory from the novel Planeswalker in the Artifice Cycle, Planeswalkers are the only ones, that can keep the mana balance of a plane at a mono. There's only a handful of pre-mending planeswalkers left, right? Sorin and Ugin are 2 of them.
Wayne Igoe don't forget bolas and liliana
And nahiri
While he lost his spark, Teferi didn't die last we saw him. And there's also Karn.
Nahiri, Bolas, Vess
I would watch a mini Movie, heck, even a 4 hours long one^^
there is a question that really makes me think...
could there have been a plane that could escape from the mending?
it's unlikely.
but could there be a plane that is not Connected to the Nexus? one so old and unreachable that not even the mending could match it.
I am obsessed with the plane Equilor, and if such mending-unscathed plane exists, it's highly likely to be Equilor.
I would have liked to see more planeswalkers survive the mending storyline.
What card has this 0:33 artwork ?
Now I'm at the start, so maybe there is something that is going to counter this... but I'm going to bet Dominaria is where Emrakul poofed off to XD (again, within the first three minutes, and there is much lore to get through)
Godly named corona Magic the gathering used there foretell years in advance
the mending is brutal and lovely
Headcanon: The mending didn't change the nature of the planeswalker spark, instead the power that the planeswalkers have is continually drained by the closed rifts to keep the multiverse stable.
cool idea, but to me it always seemed like the mending spell rewrote reality. The Mending influenced a lot more things then just the Mana supply of Planeswalkers.
Boulik Macboulinkton What else was changed?
+Ratstail91 I think the way mana works in general. Not sure though.
Also the mending caused the souls on the plane of Ravinica to be "stuck" in the living realm explaining the ghosts of the Orzhov still being there.
Also ( correct me if I'm wrong ) the Mending is what allowed Oona's mood swings to drastically change Lorrowin, every once in a while, into Shadowmoor
I thought Yagmoth was dead before korona came to be? also didn't Jesaka herself cut off the unlimited power when she gave up her spark.
Hey Sieben, can you direct me to the picture of all those PWs featured in the video please?
I wish they didn't kill off or depower so many pre-mending planeswalkers. I actually started to write what if? articles about them and how they could fit into the modern storylines
www.mtgfanatic.com/forum/viewdiscussion.aspx?id=240277&page=1&pagesize=25
They kind of had to so they could make cards out of them. They wanted the planeswalkers to be their mascot. The "Drive to Work" podcast episode on planeswalkers explains why. It's also a really interesting podcast about the behind the scenes design process.
love the vids! would love to learn what ever happened to garth, one eye tho :D
just wish there was one pre mendeing planeswalker card made
It would be interesting if one maintained the god like ability and became a problem for the modern Plains-walker.
Nicol Bolas will rise again.
Maybe some did and call themselves the eldrazi lol
+bait668 Maybe the eldrazi are to manage the flow of mana or act as natural enemy's to those god like plains walker. Maybe the eldrazi are the exact opposite of the walkers. don don da!

( Have a artificial Hip and a Spinal Stimulator.)
So can I have a moment of your time to tell you of the reason why you should give up your weak organic body and be completed just as I?
You dont have to convince me man, give it a decade or two and my right knee has got to go.
Can an artificial limb give me full use of my left arm and hand (which I don’t have due to Cerebral Palsy)?
Love it!!!
Do you think emrakul will ever launch an attack on dominaria?
please make a movie of the mending lore. actually ill watch a movie about any lore lol
So is throne of eldraine pre mending cuz beast within on a plus is broken
The Mending was an inside job
So the mending is just a multiverse banned and restricted list?
Love your lore videos
now im wondering old planeswalkers vs. eldrazi....who wins?
So having Karona as my Eldrazi edh commander is kinda.... destructive? damn
as long as planswalkers are our main character i like they dont have limitless powers but even urza as a premending planswalkers could not fix all his problems alone
Still waiting for that Tezzeret lore video.
YESSS YESSSS YESSSS MOOOOOOOOORE
Bolas wants more story..................BOLAS NEEDS MORE POWER!
+The Archive of Ruin MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PILONS
Logan Plourde I concede, your references are too strong.
Where the karona video at?
Planeswalkers in the story being powerful again would be cool, but playing with them in card form would be a nightmare. They are hard enough to get rid of as it is already.
One drop karn with instant final ability :-D
can you do a video on speculating who split up alara?
Seiben, I would watch The Mending The Mini Movie
Did any of the Planewalkers before the Rifts survive, or is it confirmed they all died?
Nicol Bolas, Liliana, Karn, Teferi, Ugin, Sorin, and Nahiri are all pre-mending planeswalkers still around. Venser was a planeswalker before the mending, but he ascended to only post mending power just before the mending, as was Radha (but she sacrificed her spark to fix one of the rifts).
I'm still waiting on a lore video on Nicol Bolas and Tezzeret but I know you will never do videos on them..
i want a legitimate movie thats follow from erxas saga to the mending
Leshrac. Oh how i miss you
Personally, I don't have a problem with reigning in the planeswalkers' overall power.
What about top 10 most powerful planeswalkers according to lore.
Pls do plane profile lorwyn!
Where are the other parts?
I would actually like a 40 minute video
more long vids man , also we still have those plainswalkers us the players are those walkers able to use magic from any plain of our chooseing me for example I use magic from tarkir ravnica alara and theros mostly aligned with red and white magic as it was my into to the multiverse though I am well versed in all five colors in that way the mending did not really affect us but lore wise it was devastating and I would say sarkkon vol did not help matters meddling in time as he did I look forword to the rest of these videos as I enjoy learning more about the greater multiverse
