Esslingen is a classic Swabian market town from the Roman times, with the Neckar, the little venice sections, and of course the tiny streets and timbered homes .... and beautiful wine hills that face out to the West (for sunshine). Spaetzle (small pasta dumplings, made a hundred unique ways), Maultaschen (German meat ravioli), Pfannegerichte (meats grilled in a pan), and Brezels (big yummy pretzels that monks developed in the middle ages), are all done perfectly by the many fine food establishments of this town. Esslingen does not give up on its "Swabian-ness". So if you are in Stuttgart find a more managable place like Esslingen and dig into what a real, classicly German town looks like. Hike up the wine hills, and then go for a real German middle of the day food, and order up a Pfaennle and a german fass bier (beer from tap). You won't regret this.
Excellent video. I so want to go now!
