    As you progress in detailing, no doubt you'll soon want to get in to paint correction. But how do you correct the paint if you don't know what you're looking at?
    In this video I show you a great little torch / flashlight to use to spot Scratches, Swirl Marks, Holograms, RDS and more defects.

    Instead of the mag light, I would love to see a comparison of this product against some of the more expensive brands. I think it would be quite revealing.

    Thanks - very informative. How about finding wipe marks from waterless washing, or applying waxes, sealants, & coatings - do you use that same light? Some say that a more diffuse beam works better, but I tried a very bright and diffuse source, and still wasn't that impressed. (actually, the recommendation is sometimes a DIM diffuse beam - I tried the same light turned way down as well - still not that good)

    Nice presentation, as far as it goes. I was hoping to learn what one is trying to achieve with a swirl-finder light source. Is it lumens, per se, or focussed spot and lumens, viewing angle/light source position? Backscatter? Forward scattering? Any pointers would be great!
    BTW, I have that Maglite, but with the LED upgrade. Doubt it puts out as many lumens as a couple Coast Headllights, but more controllable. Thoughts?

      I've done videos with it, but I don't think I've uploaded them for one reason or another. I'll try to do one soon as it is a great tool. I also have a DAS6PRO but the vertool is a lot nicer to use. I would recommend it as it's faster to do paint correction with, and works great on really hard paint like the Cayenne using the Meguiars Microfibre system. Nothing else would touch the scratches and swirls on that.

    I'm still looking for a light to use on a white car. All the vids and examples work great on black or dark colors ...do you have a suggestion I can try?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  4 роки тому

      You can still use them on a white car, but you can't really use them in direct sunlight. The only other suggestion is something like the ScanGrip lights, but they're not cheap. There's a video on my channel of the multimatch 2 but there is a smaller version.

  • @faisal3398

    I have looked into the forums and seen people recommending the ThruNite Ti4 penlight instead of the Rupes penlight and say they deliver similar results. I think you might have tried one or both of them, how do they compare to this light?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому +1

      I haven't used them, but I would imagine they're probably a very similar item, and they use Cree LED's so they should perform well. Another option might be the Scangrip 35110 which is on amazon at the moment for £25, or even the ScanGrip MatchPen. The ThruNite is a bit cheaper though at £16.
      I would say there won't be much in it. In an ideal world and depending on your budget, I'd choose the ScanGrip MatchPen, which is between £30-50 on evilbay. This would give alot better colour reproduction.One other thing I've noticed with the ThruNite is that there is a warm white and cool white version, which can be useful for different colours of paintwork.Thanks for bringing the ThruNite to my attention though, it looks a good light and the price is tempting, but I can't help but think I've just convinced myself I need a MatchPen 😀

    • @faisal3398

      My Supercar Life - Thanks for the input! I do trust scangrips quality as I have seen them before however I think the thrunite is a good enough product, especially when considering the price, to get me through until I finish building my custom garage with high CRI lights and everything.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  6 років тому +1

      Honestly I think the ThruNite will 100% do the job you need, and it is, as you say a bargain at the price. I might get them both and do a comparison vid in the future.
      Your garage project sounds awesome, please keep me up to date. I need a garage so I can get out of the cold and rain, but then I need a bigger house with more space too grrrr.

    Thanks for the vid. One thing I never see mentioned on most of the detailers forums is colour balance - ideally you need a torch with 6400K daylight. Apart from the lack of power LUX of the Maglite torch you can achieve 'daylight' with a correcting filter. Very difficult to find this information from manufacturers, unless you are a professional photographer where lighting costs £££s.

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому +2

      No probs. I know what you're saying as the original 3M 'Sun Gun' was daylight balanced, but here's my thoughts:
      I think that it's because that was originally designed for paint bodyshops to get a perfect colour match (for example when a red car has had lots of paintwork and it looks great until you get it under street lights and it looks multi coloured!), then people started using them for detailing as they gave a good, powerful light. I don't know that it'd be 100% necessary for detailing as you only need to use it to see the defects, not a colour match, so I'm not sure that you'd need to be daylight balanced.
      But you could use lighting gels to change the colour of any light. I'm not 100% how you'd do it - I wonder if you set a camera at 6400k put a piece of white card in front then shine a torch on to it. Then using lighting gels (you used to be able to get a pack called a strobist pack which colour corrected speedlite flashes) change the colour temp of the torch until the paper becomes white. Et voila you have a daylight corrected torch (I think LOL).
      I don't think it's necessary though, as I think as long as you have a light that's powerful enough to show the defects then it works. A quick way to test the theory of if it's needed or not would be to put a gel in front of a torch such as the one in the vid, and see if any of the noticeable defects appeared or disappeared.
      One other thing you can do is check the datasheet for the torch. For example the Icefire comes with a Cree XM-L T6 LED which the part number is XMLAWT-00-0000-0000T6051 If you google that it gives you a colour temp of 6200K (Cool White) so it depends on the info you have as to what's in the device.
      Thanks for your comment, it really got me thinking :-)

    • @tonyfot0
      @tonyfot0 7 років тому +1

      You can buy coloured gels from photography suppliers - these are accurately balanced for photography lights (more so in the days of film). So for tungsten it would be blue gels to correct balance. However, in the past I bought an LED for my Maglite, another way to correct. For arguments sake it is trying to have a powerful light to show the imperfections on the paintwork, the colour balance would give a accurate match for the paint colour as you say bodyshop use. For the perfectionist detailer, then they would really want to ensure paintwork is accurately viewed as it should be in perfect conditions. Probably needs some experimentation and reviews :-)

      Hey Rob. Unfortunately since getting the Vertool, I haven't had chance to use it. The weather has been so bad I've just not been able to test it properly. I'm sorry I can't be of help. I'm planning on trying it soon though and I'll report back when I do. Let me know which you choose otherwise. There's not much in it price wise.

      Thanks for the reply, some are saying it gets quite hot when using, but i look forward to your report

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому

      I had a quick play with the Vertool today so that I could get back to you. It was the first nice day this year so I washed my Audi and tested the Vertool on it. Now bear in mind that I also have a DAS6 Pro. On the Audi there are loads of holograms, and my DAS6 wouldn't shift them. I did my usual combo of orange pad with 105 and white pad with 205, but they were still there (this was in November when I had the car) so I gave up.
      I tried to remove them today with the Vertool - Megs 205 polish and a green pad (it was the only clean one, and didn't want to open and use a new orange and white pad just for a door) - The holograms are gone. Virtually instantly with no problems.
      It gets a bit warm, but I only did a door so I don't know how hot the machine would get doing a whole car.
      It feels very strange to use though. Less vibration and quieter than the DAS6, but the forced rotation pulls the machine to the right, it's a strange feeling after a few years of the DAS6 but I'll get used to it.
      So far then it seems very good. Just remember there are 2 versions of the Vertool:
      The DAS21e which is the 21mm throw - This doesn't have the force drive and is more similar to the Bigfoot
      and the Vertool Force drive - this is the one I have. It has an 8mm throw, but I'm not an advocate of larger throw machines, however has the forced rotation similar to the Flex VRG models. Hope this helps

    thank you sooooo much for sharing this i am new to detailing i recently purchased most of my gear like the new flex xfe polisher hexlogic pads 105 205 megs products etc to only come to realize i need lights , i went out and bought a torch and twin halogen site lights to find i cant even see the swirls on my car and i know its there and stumbled accross your video and placed an order for the cree thank to you :) pleaseeee can you help me one more time by recommending so actual lights to do paint correction? i heard the scangrip multimatch or astro 200sl lights are the best but again im like you i dont think i should spend that much on lights when your not going to throw them off a cliff lol i appreciate your time and thank you in advance

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому +1

      Good choice on the Flex and megs. I have started experimenting with Menzerna polishes and compounds recently and they are good, but didn't work as well on my Ferrari, so I switched back to 105 and 205. I also used to not use lights when polishing, then I did the same as you and got one of the little halogens - couldn't see a thing with it. I think they work in darker conditions, but I work outside and in the daylight, so they didn't work for me.
      The little cree torch works really well, plus you can keep it in your pocket (or keep putting it down and loosing it FFS). I use mine all of the time when machine polishing. The only thing you have to keep on top of is that the batteries are charged, as the performance really drops when the batteries start getting low. I've not seen the Astro, I know Larry over at AmmoNYC swears by the scangrips. If it was me, I would get the Scangrip Sunmatch as it's small and portable (and half the price!). I think the larger multimatch might be a bit more of a pain to use. The reason being you need to move the light source to see the defects as you're correcting, and I think the larger lights would be great if you're only working one area, but I think even if you bought the multimatch you'd still need the handheld sunmatch - if you see what I mean. I don't think I'd get along with static lights as I'd have to keep moving them round to see the area I'm working on..
      I hope this make sense, if not I'll try to unconfuse you, just let me know.

      thank you for your reply i only learn from what to buy from you good folks who get us into detailing :) yeah i have heard of menzerna alot and tempted to get some after i use the megs to try out on different paints.
      Ahh thats why im not seeing the swirls i dont have a garage so im outside :( yes thats cree sounds very helpful and cant wait till it arrives :) i may order some rechargable aaa bateries to keep in my arsenal just in case.
      larry was where i first heard about the scangrips. yeah the sunmatch looks like a cool product and would be perfect but i just cant afford to pay that much :( isnt there a huge Cree floodlight/spotlight or budget way to get same results to see swirls? hopefully something under £100 or even better £50 ?

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому +1

      +Floyd TMT Mayweather meguiars is like a staple go to for me. I've used the microfiber system a few weeks ago. It's really quick to use but you need a compressor and it's not exactly neighbour friendly. You can get a members tester kit which comes with 4 levels of compounds / polishes for about £30. Just try the cree and see how you go with it, I find it good but I'm now tempted by the sunmatch and it's all your fault lol. I even told the missus how much it was and she says it's good for the price so better order before she changes her mind. I think the full size scangrips are out of what I'd pay for a light source £300 is just waaay too much for me to spend on something that doesn't physically do something. But see how you do with the cree first. It's cheap so it's worth having either way. I find it worked better on darker colours. The only other thing you can do is experimenting with led floodlights that have the same wattage as the scangrip multimatch. The main difference would be the colour temperature. Otherwise depending on how technical you are, you could buy the led, a meanwell driver, heatsink and make one. It's not that difficult in reality. But it depends on how brave you are I use eneloop batteries in mine and I have a 1 hour charger. I think the ecig batteries may be better but I don't have them. Let me know if you need anything else

      lolololol sorry you know you want the scangrip plus the misses has given you the thumbs up!!! if i had the money i wouldnt hesitate and goodnews for you polished bliss are now stocking them and this weekend only if you spend £50 or more on scangrip you get 10% off or you can try out the zach light for about £60 for 2 bulb setup £80 for 4 bulbs or £100 for 6 bulb setup

      Cool, I'm glad it works, They're good an cheap!
      I had a quick flick through that thread, but the pics didn't load. I'm guessing it's something like an E27 LED bulb in which case you can use photography CCFL bulb holders, as they're normally ceramic and can take the heat better than plastic. Just remember to check to voltages with the US stuff as it'll be 110v not 240v. But let me know how it goes mate, I love a DIY job - Do a vid and stick it on UA-cam, what's the worst that can happen LOL.
      Ahhhhhh mate, you didn't need to tell me that. They had the sunmatch listed before, it was about £130 but it was the version 1 the one they have listed now is the SunMatch 2 and it's £170, but because you said so I think I'll treat myself, and neither of us will tell the missus that it was more expensive. Good shout on the 10% off, That means with the £16.99 I save I can buy something else. It's all your fault!

    • @MySupercarLife
      @MySupercarLife  7 років тому +1

      It's OK, It's not 100% in really bright sunlight, but it works. In normal 'dull' UK weather it works quite well in the daytime. The only thing you have to make sure is that the batteries are good as once they start to drain a little the torch starts to get dull really quickly. I use Eneloop batteries (AAA Rechargeable) in mine with a 1 hour charger. You might have longer life from the bigger battery that's designed for them but I don't have one of those or the charger.
      Hope this helps.
