    $350 for 5 custom made pieces is such a good price! And it’s going to actual people, not crappy fast fashion companies who don’t need another penny. This is what should be shared on social media, informing others of cool experiences that don’t exploit but actually help countries you visit.

    It makes me so happy that these women are called tailors and not seamstresses. They aren’t just hemming up clothes or doing alterations they are creating wearable art from scratch.
    Edit: in the Deep South, it doesn’t matter if you’re doing minor alterations or custom pieces, if you’re a woman, you’re a seamstress and don’t have the prestige of a tailor, a man.

    • @mistyz0ne

    • @asterismos5451
      @asterismos5451 5 місяців тому +149

      Tailors make suits and structured garments like that, seamstresses/sewers make dresses and skirts and shirts and the like. Both make pants. Historically it's been tailors=men and men's clothing, seamstresses=women and women's clothing but now there's a lot more overlap and a lot of people who sew will have skills in both areas. Another difference is how both go about making garments: tailors will take measurements and use math to come up with a pattern and seamstresses will drape and pin fabric to make a pattern. They both have different perks and of course everyone uses math and measurements at least a bit but for instance you really can't make certain flowy dress styles without draping. (Also interesting historical note, but due to the way they required math and measurements and also really strong hands, stay- and corset-makers historically tended to be male tailors!)

      Not to "well, actually" you, just to add on:
      Don't forget about the importance and popularity of home sewing! Most working-class people couldn't afford to have others make their clothing, so they made it themselves, and -- depending on the garment -- often out of fabrics that were previously something else.

    For those saying Asian sizing is small - correct in the shops. But these are tailors who measure you exactly tall/short/fat/thin and make whatever you ask. They sew throughout the night to accommodate tourist schedules - most only stay a day or two in town - that's why it's such a fast turnaround. You could get winter clothes too as they stock every kind of fabric.

    This video brought up beautiful memories! My grandmother and her sister (who I haven’t known) were professional tailors and sewers but my grandma never used her title to work as she was extremely shy and had social anxiety. However she made a lot of custom dresses for herself, my mom and my uncles. Their clothes were always original and well fitted cause she was talented and also skilled at drawing and making models. My grandparents’ home was full of sewing machines and fabrics. I’ll never forget. I’ve inherited the ability to draw, but unfortunately I don’t have the manual skills for sewing.
    I’d love to visit this place and to try one of their original designs. I love to collect traditionally made clothes from all over the world. These are beautiful testaments of the local culture and I wish they’ll survive through the next generations as well!

      Go to a fabric store and look at the prices. Then look up how much it is for quality cotton thread and machine maintenace. It's not a cheap hobby nor is it an easy one. People don't want to pay for a handmade item. It takes a day and around a meter/yard of fabric just to make a kids dress using a pattern, triple that for an adult pattern and account for time to custom measure it. You saying you'd be willing to wait '2 weeks for a finished product' but not being willing to pay a decent amount for it is laughable. Artists deserve an good hourly rate to live on.

      So, maybe USD$500 instead of $350. Still a bargain for the quality, considering the only things I can buy in Oz as a plus size is cheap crap fast fashion.

      i wouldn’t think the price increase would be that dramatically different…a 150% increase seems a bit much. Did he pay 2x her price for being comparatively bigger than her? I think not. Fabric material is like the smallest cost, it’s mostly their time and labor. Unless you’re like a 5x then maybe they’ll have to use the whole spool or something but it sounds like you’re worrying for nothing. Mind you, the average woman is like a sz 14 and 60% of Westwrn people are overweight (Yes, including Europeans!) so it’s not like you’re like a size they’ve never se

    As a Indian it feels weird that people are shocked by this thing that you can actually decide the material and get them stitched 😂....it's very common in India since forever and I didn't know many of the countries don't have this thing.

      Other countries do, it's just that it's extremely expensive. That's why europeans and westerners get these things done in India and Thailand, where it is cheap.

      It's a numbers issue. We don't have as many skilled experts in the field (a lot of our clothes are imported by Asian countries with the expert labour force). Experts as a result charge more and take longer due to a smaller amount of people working on the product.

      Very likely that they have a bunch of people working different shifts. Also, just looked it up and Vietnam has relatively good labor laws, at least in comparison to its neighbors. Employers can’t require more than 48 hours per week, and even if the employee agrees to do overtime, it can’t be more than 54 hours per week (300 hours per year, averaged out). I don’t know about you, but I know plenty of people in more economically advantageous countries that work that much or more. My dad worked 12 hour days 6 days a week for my entire childhood, and that was a union government job.

    This is such a common thing in many countries in SEA imo, kinda surprised to see so many people overseas surprised by this kind of service

    • @namedrop721
      @namedrop721 5 місяців тому +1

      They’re surprised because of the price difference, tailors exist worldwide but because of the price differential between world regions and the rise of fast fashion which comes from SEA, hand tailored clothing is an extreme luxury (cost) in much of the world.
      The price to run a brick and mortar business in most of the US for example is extremely high and most people wear fast fashion not tailored pieces.

    Growing up in Mexico I HATED having tailor made clothes.. idk why I just wanted to go to the stores but my mom had a seamstress and every so often I’d be in her living room having measurements taken.
    Now as an adult all I want is custom made clothes! I even want to learn how so I can do it myself.
