Rideout on the big bikes 🏍🏍 with Satnav Steve meeting up with Dad at Seaways [well that was the plan] joining him and the 'Royal Enfield One Ride' group that were coming from Scarborough.
The thing to remember when you're out, be it on motorbike, or a scooter, sometimes the best planned adventure takes a different turn and becomes a completely different adventure. One thing we've found, is that, in this community, riders look out for each other and if needs be, you sacrifice your ride to keep someone safe, or simply get them home.
However, on this occasion, that wasn't the case for my Dad. He's an 81yr old rider who still loves biking, and why not. It keeps his brain & body active, provides outdoor stimulus and most importantly the social aspect with like minded people, as well as his daughter [me] and his Grandson.
So, myself & Stevie set off about 10am, after doing a few checks, filling up etc and made our way to Seaways Cafe and arrived about 11:15. Plenty of time to get something to eat before it was too busy and to check in to see where Dad was at. That's when I got the message from Dad that his gear shifter had come off, so he was stranded somewhere near Hunmanby?
He was trying to fix it, someone was with him initially but had no mechanical skills, so they quickly left to join the other RE One Riders.
We decided to ride to Bainton Stop Cafe to see if we could meet up with Dad there and find the other riders from Scarborough. This took about 25mins and a lovely, easy road.
By the time we got there, messages were mounting up from Dad and by the time the other riders got there Dad had a flat battery from turning the bike on-and-off so many times trying to get the gears to engage.
To cut a long story short, 2 hours had now passed, Dad was on his own, and the other group were no help and carried on with their ride to Seaways and onto the A64 to the Highwayman. To say I was annoyed at this, is a bit of an understatement. Really, who leaves and 81yr old rider stuck on their own!!
So, we set off to find him, after narrowing down where he was to about a 3 mile radius. I sort of know the area, but its been a while and I've never ridden there on a motorbike. Bearing in mind this was only my 4th lengthy trip out on my FZ6 since passing my test back in May.
Once we got somewhere near Flixton, I rang Dad and described where we were. That's when I had the 'eureka' moment and realised where he actually was, up a right turn, a big hill, on the way to Reighton, near a large new build house. We'd been to the garden centre at Reighton with him earlier that year. What an absolute fluke!
Sure enough, there he was, like a little lost boy, after almost 3hrs on his own. Thank goodness he'd followed my advice to charge his phone before setting off, take some snacks & a bottle of water. He'd been using the garden where the house was being built, to nip into when he needed a pee 😅
We all rode back together, 3 generations of motor bikers, and were back at Dad's by 3pm. We stayed an hour, made sure he was OK. He was mostly just bothered that "he'd spoiled our rideout". I mean, please, a rideout is just an adventure on 2 wheels, it might not be the adventure you planned, but its still an adventure. And we all learnt a lot from the experience. Who knew you can bump start a RE Hunter? Well Stevie did, and it didn't take much to get Dad's bike started either.
A quick ride around the Marine Drive [Albert Drive] and some chips. By now it was nearly 5pm with at least 2hrs to get back to Leeds. We'd now been out on bikes for 7hrs, so I was getting tired. it would be getting dark soon too. I've never ridden in the dark.
To be fair, we made good headway onto the A64, taking the A170 out past Ayton, Wykeham and cutting back in through Yedingham on the B1258. Just a couple of pitstops and back through Leeds on York Road, so I could say I'd been on a motorway, the A46M and finally onto the A58M to get home for 7pm. A long day, but everyone got home safe & sound 👌
