Yarn Over vs Yarn Under in Amigurumi

- What’s the difference between a Yarn Over and a Yarn Under? Well, a lot and not a lot. It’s all in the way you hold your yarn and hook. Yarn over will give you the traditional V looking stitches. But, a yarn under will give you little X looking stitches. Try it out and see what you prefer!
Thank you for this nice and slow demonstration! I just discovered about yarning under for amigurumi. Definitely doing this technique from now on!
You're very welcome! I'm happy it could help you with a new technique. Most of the time, I still use the traditional method, mostly because it's so much muscle memory and trying to do it the opposite way slows me down too much lol. Have fun!
Nice and clear and easy to follow - thanks!
Thank you for clear understanding and chapters.
Great demonstration! I found a significant size reduction between two pieces crocheted under and over. The under piece is stiffer.
I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial! Yes, the difference in size is quite noticeable. Also, I feel that switching up your technique sometimes changes your tension, that will also contribute to the size change. Happy crocheting to you! ☺️
@@magdalenamathilda5476 Thank you! It makes a nice finish.
Yes you are right. Yarn under projects use more yarn making the finished piece smaller then the same one done with yarn over, and it is therefore stiffer. What I do like about this though is that the X's are very professional looking and when you look at a spiral because it's worked in the spiral it does not appear as twisted. When you hold two things side by side one goes from 7:00 to 1:00 on a clock face and the other one is rather straight. If you go to La Petitesaintcrochet she will show you the size difference and whatnot and she's a fan of both. She's very big and I'm a grooming and has a very interesting blog. I like this video it's great for people who don't use the yarn under technique. She teaches it well. There's another in between technique I've seen and that's where the first time they pick up the yard it's yarn under but then they finish the Stitch with the yarn over and it comes out like a yarn under. Enjoy your crocheting
Your hands are so cute and little! Thanks for showing us these awesome techniques! We’re blessed that you’ve stepped up in our group!
You’re so welcome!
This was so helpful! ❤❤❤
I've seen people combine the yarn over and yarn under in one stitch.
Yes I have seen that most often. This tutorial is the first time I've ever seen someone hold the yarn under both times they pick up the yarn. I've always seen it yarn under and then finishing the Stitch with yarn over. I commented on the same thing a minute ago I think the first part is what defines the Stitch the most because it comes out like a yarn under either way. This woman is a good instructor
Best yarn under video! Thank you!
You’re welcome! I’m so happy it helped you 😊
Have you tried yarn over yarn under vs yarn under yarn under? I need to still explore these techniques but I know that also give you a different look. Also do you find your projects turn out smaller with Yu,Yu?
Only do yarn under yarn under if yarn over yarn under isnt making the stitch for you, imo. My tension makes my X shapes a little sloppy with yarn over yarn under, but other crocheters dont have this issue
When I started crocheting, I watched many tutorials and I always wondered why the people wrap the yarn over the hook, for me the yarn under technique is just way more comfortable and I never did it different, without realising :)
Yup!! That’s the way a lot of people have learned without realizing there is another way to do it lol. Neither way is “wrong”, but they do produce obvious differences in results. The most obvious being the appearance of X’s instead of V’s, but what some don’t know is that you’ll get a smaller finished product using the yarn under technique. Happy crocheting! ❤️
What yarn is that?
Hey! This is Bernat Maker Home Dec in the color Aqua. I don't think it's sold in stores anymore, it was a limited type of thing. But you can find it online from private sellers through Amazon, walmart and probably eBay as well.
Hi I'm in the Facebook group for beginners and I really want to succeed in amigurumi. Can you tell me what type of yarn is used?
Hi Linda! I used Bernat Maker Home Dec. It is a bit hard to find these days, unfortunately. I did see some on amazon recently.
It looks like it's a jersey knit type. Might find it as T-Shirt yarn. I'm new to the group :)
What kind of yarn are you using here?
Hi! I am using Bernat Home Dec. I’m not sure if you could find it online or not but I’ve had it for several years and guessing it’s not in stores anymore :(
Yarn under is not the proper way to crochet someone decided to do it their way and now it’s a trend newbies think it’s the correct way to do it
