I learned knitting from my mother, 40 years ago, without cable needles. I discovered their existence 30 years ago, as I moved to Germany. I tried them and it was .... awfull. It slows me, they are falling down each 5 minutes... Brrrrrrr. I´m using them only if I kint smth with huge cables (5-6-7 stiches crossing over). But this is a big exception, normally there are 2-3-4 stiches. I hope you will enjoy cables much much more now, have fun and happy Adventszeit (how do you say this in english?) NB: your tree skirt is gorgeous! ❤

I find it quite interesting that the people who I watch on UA-cam, often like similar things to me. Even if it’s not related to the content they make themselves.

Once I learnt how to knit cables without cable needles, I’ve never looked back. It’s so much easier once you get the knack for it!

Many moons ago, my sister make a very tasteful tree skirt for our Mom.
But my Mom, Dad and I thought it was a cape. Bright red felt with gold trim.
Boy, did we ever howl with laughter over that one!!!!😂
Yours actually WOULD be cute as a capelet.

I was struggling with cable needles, but then I found SPIRAL CABLE NEEDLES! They are very comfortable to use and they look very decorative. Now I love knitting cables 🥰

I'm knitting a bulky alpaca shawl with cables right now. I drafted my own pattern, but it's still pretty simple.

It's so fun to find a simmer in another hobby! I'm loving going through your video library. I don't typically watch simming videos though, but I'll have to give the one you mentioned a try.

How I manage cables is I don't use a cable needle. I use a dpn. Usually a size smaller than what I'm knitting with. I started it because I didn't have a cable needle and didn't want to buy one. It's gone pretty well for me, though I learned through trial by fire, as I knit a sweater that had every cable under the sun, and by the end I would either depise them or be fine with them. For me, it was the latter. XD

I color code my cable charts. So I know what stitch I am on with a quick glance. I don't know why I did not think to cross off each row. Also learn to cable without an extra is a nice shortcut. Thank you for your video, I am always excited to see each new project.

    • @infamoussphere7228
      @infamoussphere7228 2 роки тому +1

I recommend just colouring in the row rather than crossing it off in black, so that if you make a mistake and need to go back you can still see it! I often use a highlighter.

That turned out so beautifully. I love the look of cable knitting though I’ve never tried it. Didn’t know that it was possible to do it without cable knitting needles. It’s on the list of things to try someday. That list has been growing a long time!
That said I’ve been saying i would replace the tree skirt for almost 30 years!

I also watch James Turner and I love Dr Gluon (his streams have helped me through some really rough times!). Are you watching their Burger Boys LP?? It's so much fun!!
It made me really happy to see James on your computer some videos ago. It's always fun when you find you have even more things in common with people you like! :D

This is so cute and squishy!
It's funny, yesterday, I sort of did the reverse thing: I was thinking about sewing a skirt for my tree, but then I thought of the carolling capes I made a fews years ago. So I just arranged one under the tree instead and it looks great!
And I'll definitely try needles-less cables! Thanks for showing us how to do it!

You're so conversational, you talk about the highs and lows and likes and dislikes of different aspects of your work, and I just really enjoy being along for the ride. I’ve never cabled without a needle that way. Usually I knit the stitches in the cabled order. It makes the fabric a little tight before you pull everything off, but it’s super fast.
Eta: I also watch sims videos while knitting. 😂

I figured out the flat- worked color work! When you’re done knitting right to left, begin working from left to right! For me, I go from Continental to English, but I’m working English style from my left hand. Unless I’m working ribbing, I may never purl again.
I love that cabled tree skirt, cape, pretty thing you knit. Thank you for sharing it!

This project came out so cool. The versatility of tree skirt or shawl is a fun bonus! Hope your arm is feeling better! I got my covid booster is my thigh and couldn't walk for 2 days. It was a good excuse to work on crochet projects though.

Fellow simmer and knitter here :D Well more simmer than knitter ( I have actually done some speedbuilds here on youtube) - I got inspired by your channel and Arne and Carlos to finally try knitting again. I learned it as a kid from my grandma, and have been doing crochet for years, but knitting always intimidated me. Now I am working on my first sweater! :D Very simply raglan though. I do hope I finish it this time. The tree skirt turned out lovely! Happy craftmas - I am really enjoying it :)

The tree skirt is as cute as Nutella! For reading charts - I recently found some translucent post-its on Amazon that have really made it easy for me to keep my place on knitting charts. You can clearly see the previous row of the chart, and as someone who usually relies on "reading my knitting" they've made charts so much more convenient!

Looking at the stitch markers I just had the sudden realization that I could repurpose some of my singular earrings (where the second one was lost T.T) by removing the wire part of the piercing hole with a bit of thread and using them as a stitch marker. Feeling stupid just realizing this now.
