Some guys can't seem to catch a break. One moment you're a hunk of prehistoric manhood strolling through the jungle, the next, you're betrothed has been kidnapped by an evil witchdoctor and you've been transformed into a semi-evolved simian. No, today is not a good day to be Toki.
Not one to let his knuckles drag in a crisis, Toki sets off to rescue Princess Miho from the Golden Palace and fortress of the treacherous witchdoctor Vookimdelo. Despite his somewhat squat stature, Toki is far from useless. Not only did he manage to retain his mental faculties, but he has also acquired the ability to spit various types of projectile at his foes. In fact, the Sega Mega Drive port of the game even went as far as to add the subtitle "Going Ape Spit" to highlight this particular mechanic.
The game is side-scrolling platformer set across six different stages, each of which Toki must complete if he is to rescue Miho and reverse the spell that has led to his current condition. Each level is full of monsters and bad guys to shoot, traps to avoid, and, as is a staple with the genre, end-of-level bosses to beat.
Enemies can be despatched by shooting with Toki's special brand of monkey spit, which can be upgraded to shoot multiple shots, or even a gout of searing flame (my personal favourite). Certain enemies will drop gold coins that can be collected in order to earn a bonus life, but you have to be quick on the draw if you're to grab them in time.
In addition to different weapons, our hero can also equip a football helmet that provides some extra protection against adversaries. Somewhat rarer (but no less useful) are a pair of sports sneakers that allow Toki to jump extra high. Sometimes these items are deliberately placed out of reach and enemies must be used as impromptu trampolines to reach them.
As with most coin-ops, Toki can be a tough game and success only comes with practice. Unlike some games that try to overwhelm the player with insurmountable odds or ridiculous amounts of incoming fire, a lot of the challenges can be overcome with practice and caution.
Toki is a decent enough game, but it's stand-out feature has got to be the quirky sense of humour bestowed upon it by the developers. The facial expressions that Toki pulls when spitting at his opponents are great and are a large part of what makes the game so appealing; I have to wonder whether the team at Rare were influenced by the Toki character when it came to creating the updated design of Donkey Kong.
Visual appeal aside, the game boasts solid, responsive controls that means the game is pretty good fun to play. The only real negative comment I feel I can make is that there isn't a tremendous amount of variety in the later levels; a couple of additional enemies show up later in the game, but there's not a huge amount of variety in the level designs themselves.
Nevertheless, Toki is still a pretty fun game to play and is one of the few of TAD's games that received conversions to home systems. With such a quirky sense of humour, it's a shame that this group of former Data East developers didn't survive long enough to develop more.

This guy knows to the millimeter exactly where everything that attacks him will stop. Many times I moved by myself, as if I was playing a game. I spent a million chips while playing this game when I was a kid. Bravo !!

I used to play this in a local arcade. After it closed, I never saw this game anywhere ever again. It took me *years* to figure out the name of it (thank you internet)
I found it on Nintendo switch but is a remastered version, game is still the same but with better graphics and is absolute classic👍🏻✌🏻

I'm an old school arcade gamer, and I did play this one a lot. I almost did the end without loose any life, but I make an silly mistake very near to face the last boss. That was a great accomplish in those coin machines back then. In these days I've played again in emulators I could make the end again but never without loose any life... still trying to end my old goal lol. great playing I did enjoy too see some different tecniques than mine you have did in this video. greattings from Brazil!

I tried describing this game to others to see if they remembered what it was called, they kept saying donkey Kong. I'm like nope, that wasn't it!
Took about 30 years to finally have it answered and it still looks as satisfying as I remember! That and bubble bobble were my favourite arcade games. Gonna have to find these on other platforms ❤I'm so happy!!!!😊 thanks for this🤗

Yo tambien carnal despues de mas de treinta años apenas lo voy hallando lo jugaba en mexico y cuando era adolecente y me llevaron a vivir a usa yo añoraba hallar este juego para comprarlo porque aqui si se podia en mexico era muy caro para jugarlo puesto que tenia que gastar mucho en las maquinitas este juego como me gusta. Vaya que recuerdos.
TAD Corporation solo existio 6 años (1989-1994) y fabrico algunos arcades en su corta historia, entre los mas destacados, TOKI, CABAL, BLOOD BROS, LEGIONNAIRE Y HEATING BARREL. Gracias por traernos el recuerdo de un clasico eterno.... TOKI

I remember watching this being played in the chippy during lunchtime at secondary school. I couldn't afford to play but often joined a small crowd of kids who would just watch this one older kid get to about level 6 before we'd have to go back to school. He stayed playing and would be late I guess!

2012? Dude i played this game for the very first time when i was like 6 or 7. I am 37 now. Spent 30 plus years looking for this awesome game i didnt even knew the game name i just remembered what it looked like.
With a classic end boss designed purely to suck up quarters.... That ending screen really made me laugh though.. 'Ayy you win, but give us more money!'

I managed to finish this game using one credit multiple times but I spent a lot of credits while mastering it. Never been that good on the trolleys though. Your performance on the trolleys section the last level was fantastic. Other long and hard games more than 20 years ago I managed to complete using one credit are New Zealand Story, Snow Bros, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (using Mustapha), Captain Commando (using Mack), Final Fight (using Cody), Tumblepop, Funky Jet, Altered Beast, Cabal, King of Dragons (using the sorcerer), Bubble Bobble, Super Qix (beating the game rewards you with one credit to play again), The Punisher (without the immortality bug on level 3 and the last two levels gained by the enemy named Trench), Tant-R Puzzle & Action (one of my favourite games of all time still).
They had this arcade game at our local cafe in 90/91 😄 I remember they also had Three Wonders. Two really good games and wonderful childhood memories 🤗

I remember the only time I saw this game in the wild, it was at a random gas station and I remember hopping on it for the five minutes we were getting gas. Definitely a fun one and I’m surprised I remembered it!

hasta el dia de hoy, sus 20 años despues, todavia me pasa que estoy en una micro o haciendo cualquier cosa, y empiezo a tararear en la mente la melodia del segundo nivel jajajaja que buena cancion, y que buen juego! recuerdo que lo jugue en su momento hasta que llegue al nivel de pasarlo con un credito solamente, con una vida incluso! todo el proceso de llegar a ese nivel fue entretenido, juego rapido y de complejidad suficiente como para mantenerte enganchado sin frustrarte. una joyita!

@@eins2001 It's not a port. It's more of a remake than anything else.
@@solarflare9078 Version 1.1 of the WHDload patch for this game enabled 2-button support back in 2004. Most people complaining about Amiga games only supporting single-button joysticks don't even know that WHDload has been a thing for over 20 years now and that you can use two or even 6-button controllers with most games.
Played this game several times at Happy Joe's in Burlington IA. Fun times and some of the best pizza I've ever had.

I remember a long time ago there was an arcade machine with a long ass line and everybody kept dying. This was the game they kept dying on lmao
Toki is a 1989 shoot 'em up platformer arcade game, or a "run and gun" developed and published in Japan by TAD Corporation and published in North American by Fabtek. It was designed by Akira Sakuma and features elements of tongue-in-cheek humor combined with the action. The player takes control of an enchanted ape who must battle hordes of jungle monsters with energy balls from his mouth. The ultimate goal is to destroy the evil wizard who cast a spell on the title protagonist; thereby transforming him from an ape back into a human, and rescuing the kidnapped princess. The game was ported to several video game consoles and home computers. The game is a typical platformer in which the player must traverse several levels with a miniboss at the end. Despite his apparent handicap, his slowness as an ape, and the fact that almost any attack can kill him, Toki is able to spit powerful shots that will help him in defeating enemies and obstacles that try to slow him down in his mission. There is a timer for each stage.

I feel like I saw this game on about 5 episodes of Nick Arcade, but never played by someone who was any good at video games or for longer than a minute. I suppose 20 minutes is just about enough! Oh what flippant ending text! I don't think I have seen another game of this type accuse a victorious player of just being lucky.
not into old platform games with the exception of a few metrovania games, so I'd never play this.
I just wanted to express appreciation for the level of skill the guy playing it shows.

I eventually completed it on MAME with save states, but even then one end-of-level baddy took me for ever.
