Music by AntiCon
Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers, most notably Chad Channing, and then recruited Dave Grohl in 1990. Nirvana's success popularized alternative rock, and they were often referenced as the figurehead band of Generation X. Their music maintains a popular following and continues to influence modern rock culture.
In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. They developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records in 1991, Nirvana found unexpected mainstream success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from their landmark second album Nevermind (1991). A cultural phenomenon of the 1990s, Nevermind was certified Diamond by the RIAA and is credited for ending the dominance of hair metal.
Characterized by their punk aesthetic, Nirvana's fusion of pop melodies with noise, combined with their themes of abjection and social alienation, brought them global popularity. Following extensive tours and the 1992 compilation album Incesticide and EP Hormoaning, the band released their highly anticipated third studio album, In Utero (1993). The album topped both the US and UK album charts, and was acclaimed by critics. Nirvana disbanded following Cobain's suicide in April 1994. Various posthumous releases have been overseen by Novoselic, Grohl, and Cobain's widow Courtney Love. The posthumous live album MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
Nirvana is one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. During their three years as a mainstream act, Nirvana received an American Music Award, Brit Award and Grammy Award, as well as seven MTV Video Music Awards and two NME Awards. They achieved five number-one hits on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and four number-one albums on the Billboard 200. In 2004, Rolling Stone named Nirvana among the 100 greatest artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014.
Cobain became disenchanted after early touring because of the band's inability to draw substantial crowds and the difficulty in supporting themselves financially. During their first few years playing together, Novoselic and Cobain were hosts to a succession of drummers. Eventually, the band settled on Chad Channing, with whom Nirvana recorded the album Bleach, released on Sub Pop Records in 1989. Cobain, however, became dissatisfied with Channing's style and subsequently fired him. He and Novoselic eventually hired Dave Grohl to replace Channing. Nirvana played many gigs and shows around Olympia Washington. Grohl helped the band record their 1991 major-label debut, Nevermind. With Nevermind's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Nirvana quickly entered the mainstream, popularizing a subgenre of alternative rock called "grunge". Since their debut, Nirvana has sold over 28 million albums in the United States alone, and over 75 million worldwide. The success of Nevermind provided numerous Seattle bands, such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, access to wider audiences. As a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the U.S. during the first half of the 1990s. Nirvana was considered the "flagship band of Generation X", and Cobain found himself reluctantly anointed by the media as the generation's "spokesman". He resented this characterization, since he believed his artistic message had been misinterpreted by the public.
He has a rainy day records shirt on he would remember Kevin Schultz used to work there. We lived there when Kurt lived there as well . We all lived down there during that time.
In the record store they're playing Leonard Cohen in the background. Very fitting soundtrack for Kurt
Nirvana never gets old. Always learn something new about them.
Back in college, I dated the woman who, a few years later, famously dated Kurt, at least for a little while, at least until Courtney found out😻
Scott, you are the hardest working man in show business! I love your style, your sensitivity, and the way your videos take me places I could never justify personally going❤
Amo nirvana e amo vc scott..obrigado pelos seus videos!!❤🇧🇷
Best Scott on tape I've ever seen Scott & ive seen many.. brilliant guys..!
Love Nirvana! I was fortunate to see them live in 1993, Lakeland Fl. Breeders opened for them. It was my first concert, and by far most memorable. Great video guys!
Hard to credit an entire generation has grown up after the demise of Nirvana. A generation of 30 year olds who didn't experience Nirvana back then.
I’m a GenXer that got to see Nirvana live in L.A. in 91! Still a fan. Great video! Rock on
🤘🏽 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Wonderful to see Johnny again in one of your Nirvana videos. He seems like such a cool & interesting person. Appreciate him for sharing his memories for this unique perspective to reminisce about Nirvana. Wow, what was & what may have been. Nirvana truly changed everything. Much thanks to you both.
I live in Olympia and my wife's from Aberdeen, we have Kurt flowing through our veigns
The Gits! On that poster! @9:11 Aww. 💔 If you've not done, would you please do their story? It's heartbreaking.
Man I can't thank you enough for all your content but the Nirvana stuff really hits home... literally, I live in Olympia. Thanks again for all your hard work and wonderful content Scott. Your page is one of few that I am captivated by. Keep up the great work man!
That’s so cool thank you . Olympia is a magical place.
❤ congratulations Scott your work is wonderful
Love this, Nirvana videos are always epic! Thanks Scott for taking us along for the awesome ride!
I went to Evergreen 89 to 93. Love the trip down memory lane.
Smells Like Teen Spirit was the anthem of the teenagers in the 90's. It never grows old.
We miss you Kurt❤️
Yes 🥰 was listening to brand new Aerosmith's pump album with a hard@N, and Fishbone and Nirvana, smells like teen Spirit came on drove me wild , I was like grade 8-9, 245lbs and jumped up thinking the world just changed was awesome 💯, then grade nine science they ended they aerosol hair sprays and started healing the ozone, huge change
It grew old for the whole band. Radio in my area played it so much I grew tired of it myself. I still won't listen, because Nirvana has so many other better songs that weren't even released as singles.
@@roxannemoser true , they destroyed much music with it was like shark turning in circles, but alot of other rythms came on strong running it over
Thank you Scott and Johnny very well done.
Me and my wife will be leaving for Seattle for the first time to see the Mark Nirvana left behind. I'd love to have someone like Scott to spend a day with showing us around and have some fun. Thanks for the videos, Scott.
This was a true treat to watch! Thank you, Scott and Jonny. Love this trip down memory lane and Nirvana history. ✌🎸🎤🎶 😊💜
Thank you Verna!!
Thanks for raising video. I enjoyed it very much and I love the city of Olympia and the history of it in general. Have you ever made a video of the old clubs and haunts in Tacoma?
Love this, nostalgia from the golden era of the 90s. Thank you Scott

Cobain and Grohl have been my idols since high school, both intelligent and amazing talents. Thank you for all the great work you do Scott, always awesome, interesting and informative.
Love the Kurt Cobain videos!! Keep them coming!!
Wow... So cool to be able to tell people that you sat on a couch with Kurt Cobain and used to see him everywhere. So cool.

Thanks for this video. Love Kurt and Nirvana. Rest in peace Kurt. Always a pleasure learning new things about him and Nirvana.
20:17 2 photos to the left of Dave is the incomparable Burl Ives. A true Legend.
This one was very special. Thank you. I was here in 2019 driving up to Vancouver to fly home to the UK and was totally unaware of the Olympia/Nirvana thing at the time. I did stop at Sleater-Kinney Road to take a photo of the sign, because I am a fan of that band. Maybe when you are back here you could do another vid with Jonny on Sleater-Kinney? I found a fly poster for them in a bar in Portland, so my trip all hung together. This was all so, so, so great. I totally loved it.
Nirvana is my all time favorite band, I damn near don’t even have to listen to them anymore because the music is forever burned in my brain. Loved this upload ! Thanks Scott 🤟🏻
Videos like this make me really appreciate living 10 minutes away.
Camping out for concert tickets were some of my favorite memories!!

nice job scott! you are in my state and in my heart!! thank you for what you do.
Love the uplifting memories as well as the stages of loss you go through and show what good people actually did,
Hey Olympia that's my hometown! Downtown has changed so much. It's just full of down-and-out people 😟 I started going downtown in '95 we had a wonderful music scene, outdoor festivals and just an all-around good vibe. I thought I would always love Olympia downtown but you couldn't pay me to go down there now for any reason. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the video. Also there's still some old timers that are around if you go into the Clipper bar or McCoy's tavern or the Reef you will run into people who knew him personally and more than likely get first-hand account stories you may not have ever heard before.
Cousin Eddie was wearing a Dickie in that picture. That's the significance there.
I lived in Olympia during this time. It was a great town back then. I worked at a bar hotel across from the capitol called Henry C's. What a great town it used to be. Might still be. Haven't been there for a long time. Great video. Thank you, Scott.
Badass video. Best guys to show us the places!!
Great tour. ❤ A few years ago at the Isle of Wight festival here in the UK Seasick Steve and Foo Fighters shared the bill. Both Steve and Dave Grohl recounted a tale on stage of how they had met at a small show in Olympia or Washington when Steve was a drifter and hadn’t seen each other again until that festival in 2009. They both seemed quite emotional about it. I’m pretty sure Steve said it was one of Dave’s first sets with Nirvana. I can’t help but wonder now if it was the party in the mods!
Good Evening Scott 🙋🏽. I hope you had a Awesome Amazing day ‼️ thanks for sharing this with me ‼️👍🏽😃
Love all the Nirvana / Kurt Cobain/ David Grohl Stories and History. This is so awesome Scott thanks for sharing all this with us, we live vicariously through your videos as most of us can't get to these places to see them. The Nirvana stuff especially. Great job Scott & great content 👍🙏
Awesome. Thanks for this. A nice surprise when I thought this series was done…
Two of the best!
I loved listening to Nirvana growing up!
Do you think had Kurt lived if the Foo Fighters songs would have been sung by Kurt and not David! I have a feeling that the band would have been even bigger had Kurt lived and even if they might have broken up in time they would have done reuniting shows with new songs!
@@jayweiss4378 without a doubt
Definitely need more collaborations between you two foolz🤣… thanks for another awesome vid Scott!!
Great video! And I have to say, the cure is my favorite band and cut here is an AMAZING song. Loved their little shout out.
And to think I almost CUT that part out lol. Glad I left it in!
Robert Smith would've haunted your dreams
Cobain is my all time favorite music subject. Thanks brother! Another great video. Thanks Scott.
Edit: ty as well Jonny! You're a cool maestro as well!

Oh man this is going to be great!! I haven’t even watched the whole thing yet Scott… but I know this is going to be epic!! Thank you as always for sharing with all ur knowledge!!! ❤✌️
Hi Scott! Love love love this video!!! So interesting to see all the small venues Kurt preferred and enjoyed doing back in the day-didn’t realize just how small they actually were until your video tonight and his favorite hangouts. Seeing them I can truly understand now how he felt about it being so intimate with his fans at that time. Also enjoyed seeing his picture and location where they decided to hang it in the restaurant. Also enjoyed Johnny Nirvana with you taking us down memory lane sooo cool! And you know how much I love your sense of humor Scott-the ending of the video was hilarious!!!!! Thank you and much love. ❤
Thank you Coco!!
I'm very excited to share with you that last night at the Grammys Nirvana won the life time achievement award.... so happy 😊 ❤✌️ It's also good to see Dave back out here doing his Thang...

Great to see my hometown on this channel Scott. Learned some new info about Nirvana and Olympia locations.
A friend of mine went to Annandale HS with Dave. Lucky girl 👍.... More cool spots to visit. Thanks Scott 💯
I live in Olympia and had no idea about these places. Thanks for this informative video. I will check these places out with my kids.
I love your town Sonya thank you for watching!
Scott, man I love every single Nirvana, Eminem / PROOF video you make.
I was first introduced to Nirvana in 95 when I was 11 when I watched the Unplugged in New York MTV episode.
I got heavy into, and obsessed with Nirvana in 99. 5 years after Kurt left us.
I scoured Napster, Kazza and Limewire for any and all unreleased Nirvana songs to burn into blank cds. Than years later those songs would be released on a huge box set eventually.
I had the Kurt and Courtney documentary, the Come as you are biography book, t shirts, posters and every album of course.
The last song I ever recorded off the radio on a cassette was Nirvana's last song they ever recorded as a band "You know your right"
I have a picture of a kurt cobain exhibit from visiting The hard rock cafe in Las Vegas in the mid 90's as well.
Always love the Nirvana content especially from you Scott! 👍🏼
Thanks for the great content!!!

great video Scott
Great video Scott! Thank You💋
Scott, I did my own little kurt cobain tour when I visited seattle in 2013. Went to his house, viretta park and his bench, marco polo hotel room 226, and 2 of the last places he was seen alive. Linda's tavern and the cactus restaurant in madison park by his house. You should do that cactus restaurant location in one of your kurt videos. Also, try the food when you're there it's really good!!
I’ll definitely check out the cactus restaurant sometime thank you !

Great video! Awesome work Scott!!
At 11:05 when you’re standing in front of where the surf club was, about ten feet beyond that wall the bands backs would be facing you. That’s where the stage was. I’m positive because I went there a lot. The front of the building looked nothing like that then. It was a wall with a door and a tiny display window to the right next to the door that they’d tape the flyer for the next show inside of. You entered through the front door, took an immediate left, walked a short distance and there was a small table with usually a girl that you’d pay $5 to and you’d get a black light stamp on your hand. The stage was tiny and about knee high. I wasn’t at the nirvana show in October, my first time going to the Surf Club was November 1990 when Giant Henry, Witchypoo and Steel Pole Bathtub played. I still have the shirt I got from SPBT. North shore remains one of my favorite oly venues of all time.
Yep, I was at the show and in that clip behind the speakers watching Dave hammer! (I was a drummer) a nite I'll never forget being so close... a cool fact about the Surf show is that they bombed the oly high schools with flyers. It was a all-age. All the other jams were for college crowds. Alot of peeps miss Courtney's fnb#%$! place on Delphi and Rignall Hall off Steamboat Island Rd. where they had a show, on the way to Evergreen and Aberdeen Wa. I missed Soundgarden at the performing arts and drove right by Heart playing at the Capital campus! they never had a good band there before! lol Recognize Johny. oLyRoots
that is cool you got to hang out with someone who was in his band and the Dick you could not remember was Dick Van Patten if you never looked it up lol but great video again and it is always great to view old history keep it alive 😉
Great video friend
Another great video, you guys make an amazing duo
Great Vid Scott.... I can relate toJohnny.. he’s the real deal..”within 6 months they became the biggest band in the world”
