For a moment, I thought to myself, who wants to play as a Panda. Then, I quickly realized that the answer is, " Who doesn't wanna play a game as a Panda with a jet pack?!?!?!
It's Amazing how these game have massive retro vibes of the Amiga era, looks like stuff that could have been released back then on that platform, just with updated graphics and gameplay if those system would have lasted until today 😁
Lethal Wedding looks a heck of a lot like Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Rocket Panda looks good, something different you could have seen released back in the hey day. Mega Cat was the studio that did Coffee Crisis which was just average, that's what i knew of them. Big Evil Corporation actually developed and self published Tanglewood, it has a custom sound driver and the dev used 68k machine code to make his engine which is impressive; it's a solid game if you really like Megadrive/Genesis.
I bought Tanglewood from them a year or so ago. I ended up never playing it, because the bevel on the PCB is so slight that it feels very sharp. It's a far higher angle than either OG games or Retro-Bits carts. I'd never put an unbeveled cart in the Genesis and that cart was barely any better. I ended up selling it to my local retro game store instead of playing it. I hope they change their manufacturing to add a proper bevel to the cart. ZPF does indeed look excellent.
Sega Lord X I know you're definitely looking forward to Earthion. Both that and ZPF are looking to be some of the best looking shoot em ups on the Mega Drive next to Thunder Force IV
Want to see if the devs of zpf saw earthion and think they need to step their game up. Earthion looks like the next step to genesis development next to real bout fatal fury
@@48hourrecordsteam45 Not sure if the devs of ZPF will be able to match what Yuzo and his team got cooking up. I'm looking at it like the pro devs and then the devs that possibly grew up playing the classics so now they want to create a game from that era the best way they can
Great video SLX, and these games look great! Unfortunately, I am not a fan of publishers and middle-men like Mega Cat Studios that don't offer digital download purchase options. I'm not a physical collector any more (live in a Tiny House and am very power-conscious), and prefer to play these games via emulators. Eventually I'll grab an FPGA device when the device comes along, too. I really don't want to pay for paper and plastic I have no need of just to support these amazing devs. I backed stuff like Tanglewood, Tanzer, Xeno Crisis and a lot more via Kickstarter when I was collecting, and all of them offered up ROM copies too. It seems a little backwards to not offer up Digital copies in 2024. Not all of us retro-game enthusiasts have need for physical hardware any more. Even those with hardware might even prefer ROMS for use with an EverDrive...
would you consider doing an episode on the unreleased sega genesis game ResQ ? if for no other reason than to speak on both the great starfox esque bonus stage and the great matt furniss soundtrack?
ZPF looks great, the devs clearly likes Android Assault and Lords of Thunder. I don't love the bullet hell style hotdog bullets though. But that's a minor gripe.
Not really. Once you go over 256 it only looks bad when you convert video. In the real world I could never really tell the difference between SNES and Genesis colors.
ZPF looks great, the developer clearly likes Android Assault and Lords of Thunder. I don't love the bullet hell style hotdog bullets though. Minor gripe. Otherwise it looks fantastic!
Homebrew games have been a thing for a long time, especially with Retro Gaming becoming expensive and people craving new software for their old reliable consoles, talented and passionate developers have risen and answered the call. yet another reason that Indie gaming is the future after all these mega-corporations consume each other and the last one standing is abandoned, because there is no innovation anymore.
Free idea: make a landstalker clone. _precision platforming with wonky controls_ Just add a facade of steampunk or deiselpunk or borrow ideas from baldurs gate 2 or something, I especially liked the main town athkatla how it was segmented into themed districts, If i could code my version would gave an optional dating sim where he courts a different girl in each town.
1.zpf looks nice.. it should have more then 6 stages & cutscenes giving us story 😐 And they should add everything gamers loved from every single genesis smup 😂 .! There I said it .! 2.rocket panda look like a fun little time ..!!
In a way it's bitter sweet that MegaCat exists in 2024, because in the late 80's early 90's they would have been a tour de force on the Genesis/Megadrive which would have put alot of other game studios on notice to bring their A game or get lost in the shuffle...

I can’t wait to get ZPF for my mega drive console looking forward to play it and Rocket Panda my daughter and her cousin will love and enjoy playing it
Hey SEGA LORD X! Do you get physical “promo copies” of these games or are the companies just sending you a digital rom to try out? Just curious. As a content provider myself I’ve had difficulty finding indie businesses willing to part with “promo copies” of games / movies to let me help promote them.
It depends on the company. Mega Cat will actually send a cart that has a "Promo" label on it. Some companies will do a ROM image and just email it to me. I don't go after pre-release/promo games to cover often. Typically I just buy them myself once available unless the developer reaches out to me.
@@SegaLordX Cool! Thanks for the insight. I’ve tried contacting a number of independent companies (mainly movie producers) and some of them all but laugh in my face at the prospect of “promo copies.” Which is confusing to me because you’d think they would want (otherwise) free promo by a fan to the fans.
Eh, Panda is the only one that stands out as something new. I mean really, another shooter? Anyway nice to see some indie game news, maybe have a look at other platforms too!
Well, to be fair the genesis was always known for its shooters, so i guess that's the reason for so many Personally i would love any new game with good multiplayer, especially a competitive puzzle game, Mega Mindtris was crazy good
@@Ev3rm00n Hm, that looks interesting actually, I'll give it a look! That's what I like seeing: new ideas on old concepts if not entirely fresh ideas. ZPF just has that offputting distractng Amiga garishness to it and only really seems to bring between level shop as something that's a bit unusual to the genre for the Mega Drive. Off the top of my head I can only think of Lords of Thunder that does that but there's probably a couple more.
Gameplay looks great, but their menu design in both games is kinda poor. I saw examples of different font sizes for the same category of item (powerups), cluttered text arrangement and color selection that seemingly prioritizes theming instead of visual contrast, all of which combine to negatively impact legibility and at-a-glance understanding.
I will never get tired of seeing new games released on the Mega Drive nearly 36 years later.
ZPF looks amazing! This is a dev team to watch. Thanks SLX for featuring them!
I'm pretty sure ZPF is Ancient/Yuzo Koshiro.

Lot going on in my life, thanks for making these videos to let me escape.

Mega Cat is located in Pittsburgh! I've seen the studio and logo on the way to Oakland.
lethal wedding looks great.
The demo plays great too. I thought it was cancelled but hearing it's still in development is such great news
ZPF features some impressive background scrolling! It even has a pair of golden b00b5 (@2:54) in the stage selection's screen! 😄
Nice set!
Cool topic. Much appreciated as a developer of new retro games!
They resumed development for Lethal Wedding, then? I thought this one would be left in limbo indefinitely.

That's a shame, i didn't play it on real hardware but Tanglewood is an amazing game, great atmosphere, hope they fix it 😕
