Roy Disney was apparently so horrified by Fantasia that he demanded all unsold games to round up and destroyed. The issue wasn't due to his dislike of what the developers had done, or because the licence had been granted without his permission, but because he wanted to respect his Uncle Walt's wishes of never allowing the Fantasia IP to be used for artistic license. Somehow someone at Disney had allowed the IP to be used in error.

Disney was probably the most influential franchise in video games during the 8 and 16 but era. They really new how to maximize the animation and made sure their games passed their own quality. Those games got the Disney and Nintendo seal of quality.
The most influential I wouldn't agree with as that means they influenced the video game industry more than any other company. They wouldn't have influenced others more than Nintendo with their consoles and their frranchises like Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and so many more. Seems like everyone wanted a mascot like Sonic from Sega after its success, and so many games companies imitated Street Fightrr 2 from Capcom. Disney made some great games, but with Sega, Virgin and others developing games for them, Disney's influence would be minimal compared to the other big video game companies. Well that is what I think anyway.
This was a great episode! I've been collecting Disney Genesis games and have almost all of these but it was awesome to see the ones I don't have yet in action.👍
Imagine if Fantasia had been for the SEGA CD instead of the base SEGA Genesis. Of course, the controls still needed to be tighter, but the visuals & music would've been unlike anything else out there at the time.
Unlike anything else out there? I guess it's possible. Y'know what else is possible, they half ass it and give us the Genesis game with different music.
@@VenusHeadTrap2 Don't know what the problem is with GEMS music either. If I'm not mistaken, Eternal Champions cart version used it too, and has some of my favorite BGM's. Disney games on Genesis are a mixed bag; sometimes you’ll get unforgettable classics like Castle of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin, and The Lion King, and other times, you’ll get garbage like Fantasia.
18:05 Can't recommend Maui Mallard/Cold Shadow enough. This game is actually on Steam under the title Cold Shadow and is a direct port of the CD-ROM release which had a remastered CD-quality OST, better colors, and a PDF of the colorful PC manual. Keep in mind that while it can run on modern computers, nothing else is changed after that as it is an unoptimized port. You may have to look up a guide to get the music running, or mess with Steam's controller configuration to bind the keyboard to the controller since it does not have native controller support. But once you do, it's amazing. One of the best Disney Interactive games.
Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Quackshot, Mickey Mania, Aladdin, and Great Circus Mystery are some still of my favorite Disney games! I only had a Genesis as a kid and I always had hoped Capcom would have ported over Mickey's Magical Quest 1 and 3 from the SNES. Honestly, the Sega in-house knew how to make such an amazing Mickey and Donald games! I wish they had done more of them! The SNES had a few great Disney exclusive games as well! I'm wondering why Maui Mallard didn't make it to the Genesis in North America? It looks really good!
I'm glad to know that the Sega games of Aladdin and Lion King have since seen a re-release in a collection for today's consoles (even if it may have been done partly to help promote those new live-action remakes), but as an older Disney fan I think it's kind of a shame to know that there are still so many other well-made titles to come from them over the years that are never as lucky, especially a lot of the stuff that Disney Interactive put out for PC in the 90s.
I always found it amusing how Pinocchio was advertised as "Only For Nintendo!" on the front of the Super NES box. Uh, you sure about that? In addition to its difficulty, Gargoyles commits the sin of retconning the other gargoyles, making it seem as though Goliath was going solo. Did they see the show? Was it still in development?
Quack Shot, World of Illusion, Lion King and Maui Mallard... I managed to nail some of the really high class ones back then and none of the stinkers! Real thankful for that.
Same sentiment here: before their Sega games I didn't really care for Disney. But playing "Lucky Dime Caper" and "Land of Illusion" on the Master System made me a huge fan. Speaking of, please also make a video of their SMS and GG games, which IMO easily trump the MD games.
If they had done a Disney collection of the nes games they would still be rolling in dough today! Mistakes were made!(chipndale, ducktales, little mermaid, talespin)
Aladdin's where I started gaming. Disney titles were excellent back in the day. I remember playing World of Illusion with family and to this day it was some of the most fun I've had in gaming.
Traveller's Tales were known for pushing the Genesis to its limits, ranging from games like Mickey Mania to Sonic 3D Blast. They really defy what the Genesis was capable of, next to Treasure and Clockwork Tortise, the developers of The Adventures of Batman and Robin.
15:00 This is my first time hearing about Goofy's Hysterical History Tour ever...this seems like a potential "hidden gem" at a glance. I'm sure there's Genesis gamers looking for more 2D platformers to add to their collections! (whether literal collections or figurative collections, lol)
One of the first games I had on mine when I got my Genesis in 1993 was World of Illusion. Still one of my favorite games to date, also ending up getting Aladdin, The Lion King, The Great Circus Mystery, Mickey Mania, and Castle of Illusion. All wonderful games always wanted Quackshot but a friend had it.
The games Sega of Japan worked on were solid, those being Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Quackshot, not counting the SMS games. Some companies had no business touching the Disney license, like Talespin, both Beauty and the Beast games, Little Mermaid, and Fantasia.
Gargoyles RULED! yes it was hard at first but like you said once you get used to how it plays you can get through it with enjoyment. I have a copy CIB too :)
I finished Lion King on Sega, and again (with keyboard controls) on PC! Great game, the SNES version is a bit broken. The same goes for Mickey Mania, the Genesis version is great but SNES version has some weird hit detection
Many Thanks for the Video , I went back played & completed Mickey`s Circus mystery today which was a great little game as in 1994 I had moved over to the SNES.
Do remember having a friend back in the day who was super into the Genesis, to the point where he would make weird claims. Yeah one time he was bragging about Sega and Disney being a match made in heaven, how Nintendo wishes it had good Disney inspired games. Do remember it was kind of a doushy move, I threw Chip n Dale rescue Rangers from the nes into chest, followed by Darkwing Duck, followed by Ducktales, followed by the little mermaid, then I grabbed mickeys magical quest, grabbed goof troop, he left after the snes cart of goof troop was about to hit him, lol.
I found it interesting that disney also targetted the gaming landscape since the 80’s by turning their cartoons of mascots into games on whether system. And back in the day i was getting wild about hearing ducktales among other disney games being on the nes. But boy i was disappointed in many ways because being not that friendly, colorful and friendly as i was expecting. Also it’s obvious that disney took inspiration from both sonic & mario games (among others) to cash on the mario & sonic craze, eventhrough it was mostly targetted for younger kids. But whether disney tried hard to bring the magic feel of their anime cartoons into it’s games by pushing those hardware systems to it’s limit, those disney games will never ever replace sonic or mario games.
Fun fact. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (the North American title) was apparently planned to be released on the Genesis but cancelled. However, we got that version via a native Windows 95 port.
Disney published two holiday 95' games in NA/Europe. In NA we got Toy Story and Gargoyles. In Europe they got Toy Story and DD Maui Mallard. Either way in one of the regions you missed out on a quality title. I know as a kid Gargoyles were super popular so it made sense to get that one out (maybe they weren't as big in Europe) DD Maui Mallard indeed almost got released for the holiday season of 96' in NA but no one decided to pick it up or the publisher backed out. Also it's understandable why Disney didn't want to publish all three in both regions as you end up competing with yourself in a sense and there is only so much budget/resources.
The reason why Maui Mallard never got a North American release for the Genesis because Nintendo bought the rights so they can bring the SNES version here.
Mickey's Ultimate Challenge surprised me because I've never seen anyone review a WayForward game pre-Shantae. I also had no idea they ever made a game for Sega. Too bad it couldn't have played like a proto-Shantae game or something instead. Also Gargoyles the show was awesome! I still on occasion when I have time for my mind to wander think about cool moments from that show. The game I think I rented it once and it did frustrate me very much. I can't even remember if I got to stage 2 or not? But I do recall being floored by the graphics. While I am on the topic of Gargoyles I do have to add RIP David Warner aka The Archmage! Among a metric ton of other equally memorable and awesome characters.
Disney and sega, disney and capcom... Man, they really cared about doing at least some decent games back in the day, even with a few bumps on the road and some crappy games.
A video about Disney on the Sega Master System would be great, too. Many people I have talked to think that the Master System version of Castle of Illusion is just a port of the Genesis version. Oh how wrong they are!
Quckshot was a pack-in game for my genesis 1 that also came with Sonic and X-men. I played quackshot the most and to this day love thr game play and charm to it 😀
If you're not watching this at 60fps? both Aladdin and Belle become invisible when taking damage - syncing with the frames where the flashing sees the sprites turned off
Always felt licensed games were way harder than 1st party games, which was kinda dumb since Disney/Nickelodeon games were aimed at younger kids but were brutally difficult.
So, what happened when the licensed game was a first party game made by Sega, like Quackshot ? "Licensed" does not automatically imply "3rd party" and I think it's weird that you assume it does. "Licensed" just means that some company (be it first or third party) paid to use the intellectual property of another company. A licensed game can be made by anyone, even a first party. Don't confuse licensed for third party, that's not how it works. Sega (the first party) developed plenty of licensed games.
If you can, play the Brazilian version of Donald in Maui Mallard, as the PAL release runs slower than the intended speed, much like many others. In Brazil, the TV signal was actually 60hz, so it's basically just like anywhere else in the world, except most European countries in the analog era. Gargoyles received a fan patch which adresses your criticisms, making Goliath stronger overall, similarly, games that suffered from the same issues, like Sunsoft's Superman, the first X-Men and a few more received this treatment, making those games better too. On a personal note, while I like Aladdin's visuals, which is really close to the animated movie, the SNES version, made by Capcom is the one I prefer to play. I also noticed after watching it that the Circus Mystery game starring Mickey isn't as polished as the SNES version, it's probably a port. I also prefer the Master System version of Castle of Illusion over the Genesis.
Games that were made with the Genesis in mind didn't do so hot on the SNES, and games made with the SNES in mind didn't do so good on the Genesis. Both platforms were night and day, something we no longer see in modern consoles.
The PAL version of Maui Mallard can be played on a US Genesis if you use a Game Genie with the code EAAT-BL1T. It runs perfectly at 60 Hz, without any glitches or speed issues.

19:24 Most of the Disney's game have excellent OST but for me, Cold Shadow is by far the best. (The PC version is just fantastic)
Quackshot is such a good. I was playing it just the other day and said to myself, this game is just as amazing today as it was back when it first came out. I will say that I do find it to be super easy, but as a kid I had a hard time with some of the levels back in the days.
It has aged amazingly. When I got my first emulator last year I made it a point to play it and finally finish it after 30 years
@@tokenblack7983 nice! It's pretty crazy just how great the game still is after all these years. The Sega Genesis just has a lot of amazing games that have stood the test of time.
@@buckroger6456 one day I’ll finish Flashback and Out of this World
@@tokenblack7983 those are two more great games. I have Flashback and it can be a little tough, but I did finish it as a kid when it came out. I remember the games graphics blew me away for its time.
A game I don't remember being that hard at the time but is giving me grief this last week is Desert Strike. I never owned it as a kid and only rented it. I walked into my local retro shop and seen a nice CIB copy for $15 and jumped on it.
@@buckroger6456 Flashback is special. I have it one switch. I only rented Desert Strike as a kid too. It’s more methodical than I remember too. One guy made that game and it’s fantastic. Flying over water doesn’t burn fuel FYI
Just beat Shadow Dancer last week for the first time
Shinobi 3 is next
That Fantasia music sounds like my stomach when it's growling.
@@AFourEyedGeek well said
Thanks for the content SLX. I have a sweet spot for the 8 bit versions myself, the three illusion and the two Donald duck games
Yup. The Sega made stuff was all top quality.
I never tried Goofy's Hysterical History Tour for the same exact reason. Who knew?
This was a great episode! I've been collecting Disney Genesis games and have almost all of these but it was awesome to see the ones I don't have yet in action.👍
I feel, like I took a turn for the Twilight Zone - I didn't know there were so much Disney games, some of them I'm seeing for the 1st time!
In some ways maybe even more than the Sega CD versions music, creepier, more brooding, etc. So good things COULD be done on it, just lazy developers tended not to.
@@maxxdahl6062 I vastly prefer the Genesis version of Earthworm Jim to it's CD counterpart. The music is missing the kick of the Genesis version, they nerfed some levels, and the extra stuff they added isn't that great.
@@ravendarklawgaming197 Haven't played Earthworm Jim CD version yet. But I will say Ecco the dolphin both games are a hell of an improvement on CD though. And Ecco 1 can be gotten for pretty cheap. 2 is a bit more expensive, but not too ridiculous yet.
@@maxxdahl6062 They nerfed snot a problem and intestinal distress. The rope resets every round for snot now, and you don't need to be as precise with timing in distress. I was quite disappointed after getting good at the Genesis version 🤣 Also the CD audio lacks the bass kick from the original, and having it stop and restart mid level is jarring. They did add a password feature though.
Disney games on Genesis are a mixed bag; sometimes you’ll get unforgettable classics like Castle of Illusion, Quackshot, Aladdin, and The Lion King, and other times, you’ll get garbage like Fantasia.
Some truly beautiful pixel art here
18:05 Can't recommend Maui Mallard/Cold Shadow enough.
Great rundown, I always wanted a good reference video for Disney Genesis titles. I’ll definitely be coming back to this in the future!
19:21 Ok I'm not gonna lie those sprites look AMAZING like those are some quality sprites
Could we get a Warner Brothers segment too?
I remember there was a Chip and Dale Rescue rangers game as well, was that a Super Nintendo game?
NES
I always found it amusing how Pinocchio was advertised as "Only For Nintendo!" on the front of the Super NES box. Uh, you sure about that?
In addition to its difficulty, Gargoyles commits the sin of retconning the other gargoyles, making it seem as though Goliath was going solo. Did they see the show? Was it still in development?
Great video! I never even bothered to look at those later released games back in the day!
Quackshot is one of my favourite games ever.
It's amazing
They did make one. Look up the Disney Afternoon Collection.
Aladdin's where I started gaming. Disney titles were excellent back in the day. I remember playing World of Illusion with family and to this day it was some of the most fun I've had in gaming.
Donald in Maui Mallard is one of my top games on the console, it is a great hidden gem.
An unbeatable combo. Loved when they collaborated.
Disney used to be great. Too bad it's now an LGBTQ+ groooming organization.
You're now in the Koopa Troop.
Accept as facts.
The Little Mermaid would've been great had it not been for the loud noise you use as a weapon.
Awesome video! I would love to see a Part 2 to this
Traveller's Tales were known for pushing the Genesis to its limits, ranging from games like Mickey Mania to Sonic 3D Blast.
The music from that Donald Duck solo level at the sea is still repeating in my head to this day
Quackshot was superb
Sega did just as good of a job as Capcom.
The games Sega of Japan worked on were solid, those being Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, and Quackshot, not counting the SMS games. Some companies had no business touching the Disney license, like Talespin, both Beauty and the Beast games, Little Mermaid, and Fantasia.
@@Bloodreign1 yes
Better if you ask me. Capcoms are the Saturday afternoon cartoons. Segas are the classic films
Capcom? Lol. They had one game.
@@yearight5303 I meant they did as good as Capcom did for the NES and SNES Disney games.
Gargoyles RULED! yes it was hard at first but like you said once you get used to how it plays you can get through it with enjoyment. I have a copy CIB too :)
Goofy's Hysterical History Tour was a throwback name of the Beatles Magical Mystery tour album.
I finished Lion King on Sega, and again (with keyboard controls) on PC! Great game, the SNES version is a bit broken. The same goes for Mickey Mania, the Genesis version is great but SNES version has some weird hit detection
I still love it. It's the version I had as a kid
I laughed out loud when he described the story line in "Goofy's Historical History Tour."
Beavis-I thought there was only one Lord?
Butthead-You’re thinking about outer space or something
I like that coloured the gargoyles character so it look he is reflecting light on the lava level.
Disney and Sega made some bangers back in the day. I just wish that Disney today weren’t a bunch of groomers…
Ok boomer
@@andrewquick4176 Ok groomer.
Many Thanks for the Video , I went back played & completed Mickey`s Circus mystery today which was a great little game as in 1994 I had moved over to the SNES.
Hello sega Lord x another pretty good show I had quite a bit of fun with some of these at the time
Do remember having a friend back in the day who was super into the Genesis, to the point where he would make weird claims.
The Disney Game that Blow my mind is "mickey Mania" And MG This is my top favorite Game on the Genesis!!
Fun fact. Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (the North American title) was apparently planned to be released on the Genesis but cancelled. However, we got that version via a native Windows 95 port.
Disney couldn't find a publisher for it. Which is amazing considering some of the crap that did get a release.
Is it available on Steam?
Disney published two holiday 95' games in NA/Europe. In NA we got Toy Story and Gargoyles. In Europe they got Toy Story and DD Maui Mallard. Either way in one of the regions you missed out on a quality title. I know as a kid Gargoyles were super popular so it made sense to get that one out (maybe they weren't as big in Europe)
DD Maui Mallard indeed almost got released for the holiday season of 96' in NA but no one decided to pick it up or the publisher backed out. Also it's understandable why Disney didn't want to publish all three in both regions as you end up competing with yourself in a sense and there is only so much budget/resources.
@@SRC267 I believe so! Unless it was pulled recently or something without my knowledge.
Man I wish that Goof Troop, DuckTales and Darkwing Duck had a Sega Genesis game each. It would have been awesome to play.
There are some unlicensed Chinese Disney games for the Genesis/Mega Drive: Mulan; A Bug's Life; Hercules; Lion King 2; Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Quckshot was a pack-in game for my genesis 1 that also came with Sonic and X-men. I played quackshot the most and to this day love thr game play and charm to it 😀
I remember a friend lent me his Mickey game. I was like, a kids game. Turns out it was really fun and addictive.
Thanks for another great video buddy.
I’ll definitely check out Gargoyles.
That damage sound at 6:12 sounds awfully like the damage sound from Moonwalker. 🤣
It's just like playing the cartoon with most of these titles bloody awesome games 🙏🏽👍🏾
I never heard of the Goofy's Hysterical History Tour, looks like a fun game.
Nice overview.
Thanks man.
👍
If you're not watching this at 60fps? both Aladdin and Belle become invisible when taking damage - syncing with the frames where the flashing sees the sprites turned off
Would LOVE to see fan-created ports of SNES Disney games like Beauty & the Beast, Darkwing Duck & Mickey's Magical Quest!
Are those fixes for gargoyle etc in the US releases?
Games that were made with the Genesis in mind didn't do so hot on the SNES, and games made with the SNES in mind didn't do so good on the Genesis. Both platforms were night and day, something we no longer see in modern consoles.
The PAL version of Maui Mallard can be played on a US Genesis if you use a Game Genie with the code EAAT-BL1T. It runs perfectly at 60 Hz, without any glitches or speed issues.
@@Bloodreign1did it change in the 32-bit era?
Wow I legt have never heard of most of these thanks for the video
