    You are told in the Timing Belt kit that you must turn crank counterclockwise to properly take up the slack. Going clockwise and improper belt tension will result in a violent correction of the tensioner and or spring and or belt. You just have to snug up the 19mm so that you can turn the engine without loosening the bolt. Make sure you get 2 10mm wrenches on the Alternator wire connector or you will snap the bolt and you'll be buying a new one like me. Yes you have to remove the valve cover to remove the top timing belt cover. That's the easiest part of the job!
    It took me almost 8 hours to complete. I used an Impact for the tougher bolts and nuts. No problem getting my crank off. I had 150 psi on a 1/2" NapaPro impact driver. There was antisieze on the bolt so this was not the first Timing Belt on my 02 civic. Working without a hoist of course. I removed the upper PowerSteering Bracket as well. Don't forget there
    are 5 14mm bolts on that big bracket.

    If you are going to do this job, make sure to turn the engine over COUNTER clockwise. And it’s probably a good idea to disconnect negative battery cable so you don’t short anything out when removing alternator (be sure to have your factory radio code).

    • @mjmautoinnovations

      What is the reason that you should turn the engine counter clockwise?

    • @theguitarist1290
      @theguitarist1290 6 років тому +30

      That's the direction of rotation for the engine. If you turn it the other way you risk skipping a tooth, then you'll need to re-do the job

    • @mr.nobody4900
      @mr.nobody4900 5 років тому +14

      Two Thumbs Up for making this observation. I was wondering the same why the engine was turning clockwise instead of counter-clockwise and the battery should be disconnected as well.

    • @jetcalisthenics
      @jetcalisthenics 5 років тому +7

      because this Honda engine is a interference engine you will bend the valves if you turn it clockwise.

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 5 років тому +12

      The reason he turned the engine clockwise has to do with the way the bolt is threaded into the crankshaft. If he tried to turn the engine in the opposite direction (CCW) the bolt would start to come out and not rotate the crankshaft.

    Hi 1A, your videos have helped us on numerous occasions, so THANKS! In no way are we trying to discredit this video, because it is right on the money, with the exception that this engine rotates counter clockwise, so when rotating it to make sure the timing and belt tension is correct, you have to turn it counter clockwise , not clockwise..

    Great video. A couple things I ran into, 1) Better to leave timing belt tensioner spring off until belt is on, then hook up spring. Otherwise I couldn't get belt on. 2) While torn down it's very simple to change crank shaft seal. Almost put mine back together, but was concerned about a bit of oil that was at bottom of timing belt cover, then realized likely that seal. When crankshaft pulley off and timing belt off, just slide the lower timing belt gear off the crank, slide off the giant washer with slots in it, and pry out old seal with screw driver without scratching sides. May also want to consider camshaft seal while apart. Just need camshaft locked before taking off top timing belt pulley.

    I just completed this timing belt and water pump job on my 03 Civic. Having access to this video is the only way I was successful in completing the job.
    I did run into a substantial issue with the tensioner bolt being stripped. I had to use a Time-Sert kit to retread the bolt hole. I can say enough about how awesome that worked.

    If you’re having trouble with putting on the timing belt, try this tip screw on the tensioner but not all the way give it 4 to 5 turns make sure it’s loose do not hook the spring until you install the belt. It makes it a lot easier to install the timing belt , once it is in and the timing is correct you can tighten up the tensioner connect the spring and pull the pin. 16:58

    Note that this car has an aftermarket air intake. The stock intake is right up against the back of the valve cover. You can get the valve cover off without taking the air filter box off but it's just kind of tough. Taking the air filter box off makes it quite a bit easier. Apart from that, great video.

    I watched this just for fun, but do not rotate your engine the WRONG way when you get the T-Belt back on, to verify the timing, it is called "the wrong way" both as a reason and a description. Other than that, everything else covered was very well done indeed. Replace everything under the T-Belt cover as a rule.

    I was reading the comments of the pass on this video and I just want to say, & correct me if I’m wrong, there are 2 types of motor. The 1.8 & 1.7 motors . On the 1.8 clockwise. On the 1.7 counterclockwise. On the video it must be a 1.7 motor therefore counterclockwise by the way perfect explanation on 1Aauto

    • @Ermal193
      @Ermal193 7 років тому +11

      Yes that engine turns counter clockwise. If you time the engine while turning it clockwise, at the very first crank the tensioner will try to adjust tension abruptly and cause damage to the tensioner and or make the belt skip a tooth or two. How do i know this... hmm i followed that video and had to do the job twice.

      Yessir you are correct, you'll want to put at top dead after removing the valve cover and upper timming belt cover. I remove the crank bolt after putting at TDC.

    • @erupmonsta5075

      Also this job the car has to be at level, you can potentially throw off the timing by raising only the front.

    I'd like to see a close shot of the pulley on the crank before the bolt is installed. When I put my pulley back on it appeared to not slide fully onto the crank and that concerned me. In other words, the end of the crank was not flush with the pulley. If that is normal, great. I have nothing to worry about except that I'd like to see the key be a little longer.

    The engine should be turned counterclockwise when checking timing belt installation. A new 5mm longer bolt is needed for the tensioner. During production in 2002 the tensioner was redesigned and the newer tensioner is 5mm thicker.

    Can the timing belt be overtightened accidentally or was it a bad bearings or what? Because I got my timing belt, water pump and tensioner replaced on the auto repair shop because I just bought my civic 2005 3 months ago and not sure if the belt is replaced before So I think it's a good thing to have it replaced. The car runs smooth before the process. Now when car is in idle, it sounds normal but not as normal as it sounds before I got my engine timing belt area opened up. Now when you push the accelerator, you can hear a grinding noise in that timing belt-engine area. I have no chance to go back to the shop since I moved to a new place. But the car's engine sound got worse now. Before, my car engine is silent and runs smooth no other issue whatsoever. I noticed the changes when I drove home from the shop, but I was thinking it's normal part of breaking in process, but days and months past it didn't go away. So I'm worried.

    The tensioner bolt as well Guys. I was having troubles getting passed 25ft/lb torque because the guy installing recommended 33ft/lbs of torque (18:05 of the video) The honda repair manual on page 6-27 clearly states "9.8 Nm (1.0 kgf/m, 7.2 lbf/ft)". This caused me to strip the housing! There's always a chance the housing had a little bit of damage that's true but It got way worse when trying to get up to 33 ft lbs... still probably would have been fine If I wasn't trying to torque 4-5 times higher... Like seriously man.... You just caused me so much grief over that one bolt that I could have been good by now. I had trust in this youtube video but now ill be having to double check everything that is said. Please put an edit in your video stating this, and double check the manual yourself!

    Small tip:
    This car has an aftermarket intake. The original one is a plastic square air bot held in by 3, 10 mm screws, and once it comes off (it needs to come off to give space) make sure to cover up that throttle nicely.

    • @JrSpitty

      Depends if you are working with a warm engine or cold engine. If you are working with a warm engine and remove the spark plugs you will pull all the threads out with em and give yourself a headache and a lot of lost money destroying your cylinder head. Never remove spark plugs on a warm aluminum block. The only time it is ok is on engine with steel heads. Most people don't get up in the morning and make it a project, nor do they have time to wait 3+ hours to let an engine cool.
