There's no reason an EV should cost what it does. Really when it comes down to it; it's a battery, potentiometer and electric motor. Pretty basic, it's all the bells and whistles they add on. I miss how things used to be in the 90's and earlier. There was always a base model option for car's and truck's so someone could afford something new and drive confidently knowing they won't have to worry about anything for at least 100k miles. Also the difference Auto makers used to pride themselves on how many of their brand of car's & trucks from 20+ year's ago are still on the road. Now they're only built to last around 6 years.
