Yanni's men use a hammered dulcimer, which is derived from this instrument - the santoor. But the style is totally unique here. This is traditional Persian music, there is nothing that could come before that as the Persians invented this instrument. Two different music styles.

    my twopence for what's worth:
    1: excellent piece :)
2: we have a great santoor folkmusic tradition in greece too
3: etymology: san-toor from sanskrit kata = hundred and tor = chord > hence the "hundred-chord" instrument
of similar etymology: guitar and sitar
    cheers from brussels

Excellent - the Santur is a most ancient instrument which was described in detail in the Rig Veda some four or five thousand years ago. Variants of this instrument are played in India, in all the countries of the Middle East and East Europe, especially by gypsies, and it is also a traditional Swiss instrument. It is one of my favourites, and you play it very well indeed. :)
