my dad showed me these movies when i was young - i, too, was traumatized! watching them again now - 25 years since i was introduced - and I can appreciate the camp and am no longer among the traumatized
Vincent Price, actor first-class, human first-class, may he rest in peace, always watched always remembered, a true icon. thank you so much Vincent Price for all the enjoyment you have given to so many
Loved everything Vincent Price did --- amazing actor and such a distinctive voice. I have many of his movies on DVD but I think my favourite is "Theatre of Blood".
I saw this a few years back and loved it!!!!! I'm over the moon having found this classic again. I love the acting-R.I.P Vincent Prince there is none other better. the thing that stunned me the most was that the "bad guy" actually won!!! you damn near never see that in any movie! seeing him win in the end made me want to watch the movie over and over again. Now i can THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!
Classic and over the top! Vincent out does himself. Loved the Peter Cushing appearances. Loved Carolyn Munro as the dead/suspended wife. Loved her in "Dracula A.D.72" and "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad". All in all too juicy. Loved the horrific hawk attack. Too much fun! Thanks so much! Much love from an old horror fan from California! Vincent Price was a national treasure and a great actor.
I just love how Phibes seems to live in his own Art Deco, musical universe. "In that direction... England". The lure of the bagpipes and the flag of Britannia ;) *Fun movie!*
I am immensely tthankful for this angel who posted this film in full. This is a treasure I saw over and over again in the past 50 years. I will go to visit Elstree studios just because this movie.
I watched the first one earlier These two movies The Abominable Dr. Phibes & Dr. Phibes Rises Again are movies that are & will be absolute classics forever. Time to fire off anuther doob...yeah...JCIL...!
Phibes is an amalgamation of Indiana Jones + James Bond + wizard of Oz + Dr Strangelove + it truly takes the viewers somewhere strange and desperate and motivated by love that only can exist over the rainbow and I loved this film!! Vincent Price is the master craftsman!!!!!
I find it amazing on how Phibes is the perfectly motivated villain. All he wants to do is bring his wife back to life. If they had left him alone to do this he wouldn't have killed them. We 'know' him as a villain but is he really? As a writer, I find this movie fascinating. It's why I watch it over and over. R.I.P Vincent Price.
Fun fact this was supposed to be a trilogy and the third movie was going to make Dr Phibes and Vulnavia became more heroic but it never got off the ground
@@JustAPrayer ah that's a Shame, but mabey its for the best, the ending of phibes rises again is really sad happy and powerful sins you had no Idea if they would be Reborn by the river and start a new
The 'Phibes' flicks have a GREAT visual flair, a LOT of effort was made to get them looking this good! I love it when they try even harder with their sequel, instead of cheaping out - Nice to see this in HD on UA-cam! 👍
Vincent Price is an international treasure. RIP Sir. You have been creeping me out since I was a toddler. I born in 1970 when the first movie came out. I was 3 years old when my aunt and uncle and my uncle's motorcycle club all went to the drive in to see these movies. Great memories.
me and my mom loved this man so much, we grew up watching his movies, he passed away on my mom's birthday in 1993, a month before my dad passed away in november that year at the age of 29, i just lost my mom this year in 2024 in january, she was 58. we thought vincent was so handsome, he's also a salem witch descendant.
"Better"? That is a fine point that Talmudic scholars have debated for generations :) But, Dr. Phibes certainly put the screws on people in this one :)
The Dr. Phibes films are among my all time favorites. It's all so stylish, the scores are fantastic and the camp is unbelievably good. Dr. Phibes was Batman's Mr. Freeze, only wanting his wife back. The undying style icon Vulnavia always by his side. She's flawless, gracefully dressed and I would have loved a third one revealing her as the goddess Athena, helping Phibes and Victoria residing in paradise.
This movie definitely brings back memories from my childhood during the 1970s. Scared me to death! Vincent Price delivers a fantastically frightening performance in this shocker. Also, Robert Quarry brings his own brand of finesse to this classic gem. 👍
Notice Phibes was morphing into a good guy in this movie. There were plans, but they were scrapped, to have a TV series with Dr. Phibes solving crimes and foiling villains.
That direction lead to reworking the premise and discussing another American International and Amicus production Madhouse highly a head of its time and plays with alot of fun ideas uniquely executed.
I saw these movies in the theater when they were released. They are just as entertaining now as they were back then. The scorpion throne is still the most frightening of both movies.
Vincent Price was a nut nobody could play these insane characters and get away with it in such a way as this man did and the cool thing about it is that he was a humble loving man in real life a great father so it just goes to show you miss man was one of a kind a true Ode to the art a master.😝
Bonkers but absolutely brilliant what a cast...wanted to see more of terry thomas who stole the scene again in his cameo role ...Vincent price was just something else what a actor
My grandmother absolutely adored Vincent Price and Peter Cushing. I remember watching these movies as a kid and was never scared. He was sort of a, well, twisted James Bond was kind of how I saw him. But not evil. He wanted justice for what happened to his beloved wife, and that was ok. Mr. Price was truly a gem of a human being, and a good man.
The quality of this video is excellent! Picture, sound, captions….really impressive. I don’t have time to watch the whole movie right now, but wanted to at least give credit on the presentation.
Great cast, though some brief appearances from John Thaw and Peter Cushing. However, the uncredited Caroline Munro, playing his wife, gets a bigger role than she did in the first film. Lol. The music adds to the suspense superbly.
I love the voice of the announcer. Such seriousness! He has you on the edge of your seat, as he breathlessly describes the desperate doctor! The creaking of his neck as he exits the crypt is a cute touch!
There is so much in both of the Dr. Phibes movies that touches viewers like a strange, familiar magic! The films are beautiful, funny, terrifying, and just so much fun. I'm so glad they've been posted here for all to enjoy. And isn't the music in the sequel fantastic? Love the reinterpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
I actually like this one more than the first. I'm glad they gave Price room to be fun and evil, and I also think Robert Quarry does a good job conveying the desperation of Beiderbeck, especially in the final scene. Glad Vulnavia recovered from her fatal acid trip :)
When Marshall Field’s, Chicago sold fine art, Vincent Price was their art buyer. He really was an expert in high end artworks on paper, prints, drawings, and paintings. For many, many years. I also remember when he made an appearance on The Tonight Show, and made fish for Johnny, which he cooked in a dishwasher.
I know the man is a serial killer but when you think about it he is only acting out of love. Everything thing he does is to be reunited with his beloved Victoria. First time I saw this I was in tears at the end.
I never saw a Vincent Price performance I didn't like. Back in the 70s he did a radio show with human interest stories from history that was aired on the military's Far East Network. While stationed on Okinawa 75-76, we all looked forward to his daily radio show broadcast.
I think the scene with Terry Thomas is one of the greatest scenes in horror comedy. It's the most perfect scene in the film. It's one of my all time favorites and never gets old, though I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. He was a real pro. Taken all and all we will not see his like again. At least I can't think of anyone who comes close these days. In those days the character actors were on par with the stars.
I'm sure it's partly due to my Vincent Fangirl Goggles being on too tight, but I feel like no matter what Dr. Phibes gets up to, I can't bring myself to hate or even dislike him. His sheer level of *devotion* is just gut-wrenching (even if it's a "#1 Crush" flavor of devotion.)
Didn’t expect to like it but I was thoroughly entertained! They just don’t make them like they used to. Bless Vincent Price for his enduring legacy and I loved that Peter Cushing played a small part. Also, Peter Jeffrey is cast against type here - he’s usually the stuffed shirt. Nice to see him play someone a bit looser!
Actually, I think it's Gary Owens... You know, from the old "Laugh-In" show in the 1960s, and the first several seasons of "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s? 😅😅
The book the guy in the tent had been reading, "The Turn of the Screw," (at 106:30) was actually a brilliant and famous story, made on film as "The Innocents." A must-see for lovers of dark, creepy stuff! ...Dear Vincent, I miss him still. Was a fan since I was a young teen reading "Famous Monsters," and met him in later years when he was doing "Diversions and Delights," his one-man stage show about Oscar Wilde. I've done some acting m'self, but I must say, I've never seen such a riveting performance -- and all from one guy on stage, talking. A true actor's actor. The Phibes flicks are so much fun! Oddly enough, much as I liked both the ladies who played Vulnavia, I always kinda saw her as more of a Diana Rigg character. (Does that make any sense?)
Price was an all around good guy personally. He was trained as an art historian and, as a collector, had a major influence on modern California art. He founded and was a major donor to the Price Gallery at East Los Angeles College, next to Monterey Park. It's the only major art museum in that part of LA County that I know of. His amazingly normal daughter has a Ph.D in Art History and is a museum curator in LA. By all accounts he was an accessible, friendly and very intelligent guy who was very genorous with his time for young students of the arts.
