      Meet the stat junkies..... The numbers are the only thing that matters, who a driver is as a person does not matter, what they did, how they did it, their actions on and off track, their struggles, all are nothing to them.

    I'll tell you all a little story. I used to write a weekly NASCAR column for a small newspaper in Nova Scotia and in 2003 that newspaper got me press credentials for the spring race at Rockingham. I managed to secure an interview with Kyle prior to the trip. When I got there, his press guy said, "We're going to have to do it in the garage." So that's where we went. The interview went great BECAUSE he knew how to do an interview, not me. I got to one question... this was long before Tony Stewart put the trucks on dirt. I said, "Do you think NASCAR should run one race a year on dirt?" He laughed and said, "You're from Canada, right? That would be like me trying to play hockey on ice. Most of the guys out there have never seen dirt. It wouldn't be fair." I said, "So you wouldn't do it?" He said, "I said it wouldn't be fair. I didn't say it wouldn't be fun. ARCA runs dirt all the time and they're just Cups cars." Right then a guy wearing a brown duster, a cowboy hat and sunglasses stepped between us and put his arms our necks and said, "What are you boys talkin about?" Kyle said, "Actually, we were talking about you." He looked at me and said, "He won the last race on dirt. Ask him." So I said, "If NASCAR decided to run a race on dirt, would you come out of retirement for one day?" He squeezed my neck and said, "They'll never get me in one of these cars, by my God, it would be fun." I love that family. I interviewed my favorite driver... and I met a king.

    Favorite driver right there. The day they took him out of the car was the day I lost interest in NASCAR. I tried to find another favorite driver but it never happened. I bet I don't watch a full race a year now. "I'm a never was." No. Kyle Petty made a difference not only to NASCAR but to kids.... and he was the father of a young man that was supposed to become a king. You cannot ask for more than that.

    Kyle will always be my favorite driver. Grew up with that Hot Wheels 44 car and made him my favorite driver. He may not have been anywhere near as successful in NASCAR as Richard (and to be fair, how do you follow up 200 wins and 7 championships?), but quite frankly, he didn't need to be. He was just such a good dude and from the videos I've seen he raised a great kid in Adam, I would have loved to see the two of them race together on the track like Kyle and Richard did a few times. I've never really been able to pick a driver after him to be honest.
    Thank you for the great video!

    I bleed Petty Blue because in this team I find the greatest love for the sport. The king could retire anytime, but it's not in him. The loss of his grandson, the loss of his wife, and now the loss of his primary sponsor. The 43 carries on win or lose, through loss and gain. To me the 43 personifies the spiritual struggle we find ourselves in. Once proud and full of glory it all comes so natural, but at some point we loose our way. While we may loose our way we never loose ourselves, and there is always the hope and faith that we can return to our rightful place stronger and vindicated. That's why I bleed Petty Blue and that's why I'm excited about the future and the future is Bubba Wallace jr. Now let's get STP back on as a primary sponsor :P

    I wasn't a KP fan when he drove, I like most thought silver spoon has had everything handed to him, and I couldn't have been more wrong! Today when I watch him on NBC, and see what he has had to overcome, (death of his son, trying to fill his dads shoes etc) and how he has flourished in spite of the adversity, I'm now a huge Kyle Petty fan! The guy is funny witty, and has a contagious laugh! You know you think you know it all when your looking from the outside, but I am big enough to see I was completely wrong, I love Kyle Petty, and always look forward to his input on NBC! Way to go Kyle, it is through that adversity, that makes you who you are, and your pretty awesome!

      @exodus1314 3 роки тому

      @@Don_Rodrigo44 No I liked Jr. Kyle is about my age, so probably a little jealousy right? When he was driving, I was still young and not so bright. Where as Jr. is younger, so when he was driving, I was older, raising kids, and I looked at Jr. like a kid in his fun party years. Clearly neither one of these guys had the streets paved of gold for them, as some might think. As I reflect on life, we all must overcome obstacles no matter who our parents were, no matter where we come from. Life has a way of humbling everyone. I applaud both of these guys for all of their successes. I will say it is interesting how Jr. has matured over so many years. His interviews are really good, and he seems like he is really in touch with who he is as a person. His candor about his childhood, relationships and behind the scenes have been very insightful. Also he seems like the type of person who is a loyal friend. Not my friend of course, I've never met him (too bad), but through out his interviews with his friends, you can see the loyalty. Helping them, pulling them up to another level. That unfortunately is a rare trait in todays society. Both of these guys seem to do a lot of good for others. Of course we as fans only see what is for public consumption, but I can probably imagine The King is proud of Kyle, and Dale would be proud of the man Jr. has become. Hope this answers your question. All the best!

    When people look back at Kyle's career or even Dale Jr's they need to remember the equipment they were in played a major roll. Kyle was very successful in a good ride, he almost won the 92 title but he never had a competitive car after the 42. DEI's cars went south in 05 and then at Hendrick Jr had a hard time being an employee, instead of a son of a legend that half owns his own team. From 2011 until Dale's head injury he was a top 5 nascar driver. Had either of these guys snagged a title then we wouldn't ever look at them as failures, the fact that they ran for titles consistently at points of their careers apparently doesn't matter. Like if Truex doesn't win a title he wont be remembered for much but he has been dominating the sport for two years now. Kyle wasn't as good as his dad, or Earnhardt, or Dale Jr but he was a championship caliber driver In the early 90's.

    • @aboriginalbrotha9947
      @aboriginalbrotha9947 6 років тому

      Crimson Tide If you looked back at his career, Kyle won the first race he ever ran which was an ARCA race in Daytona back in 1979 before that infamous Daytona 500 took place. His dad won the 500 which helped him recover from the worst season he had in his career while dealing with health problems and not winning a race. That year was in '78 when Kyle was working alongside his dad in the pit area. When Kyle was a young driver, he pushed his way to good positions in the point standings with some seasons which he became a small threat to the top drivers in the Winston Cup title race.

    Kyle Petty was only given really good equipment when he was with Felix Sabates and he made the absolute most out of it. He had 6 wins with Sabastes. No other driver had that many wins in one of those rides. Kyle Petty doesn't suck, people just automatically compare him to his father which is absolutely unfair and an impossible feat to come anywhere close to matching that.

    Since getting back into NASCAR earlier this year, I can’t help but feel bad for Kyle
    nice guy with all this pressure, not as much talent as his father or son
    Steps away from the sport for his son to take over
    Son dies in a crash and takes over the car to finish the contracts
    It’s something that should’ve never happened to someone like Kyle

  • @DWM2309

    People forget that 1992 he was in the running at Atlanta to win the title. That 42 car was a good piece of equipment. I think Kyle lacked the luck and when NASCAR changed to big bucks wins races mentality he was left out to dry. But man I would have loved to see what Adam could have done in what has become NASCAR.

    I always admired Kyle; Richard was my favorite driver, but I knew early on that Kyle was a different person. I don't think he ever set out to try and be his father, and I'd say he was competitive in the right cars. Adam's death certainly derailed the plans they had; he sounded like a very down to earth kid, much like Kyle.

    TBH
    Kyle Petty is never going to be talked about as one of the greatest. He isn't. I feel the problem was he raced for Petty enterprises in the 80s when they couldn't fund two cars, the Wood brothers when they were declining, team SABCO when they were rising in performance, PE2 which was just a Petty enterprises part 2 - just look at the name, and Petty enterprises long after their decline to a mid pack field filler while driving the car his son was supposed to pilot but we all know what happened. Kyle was as good as his equipment. It's just really sad that he was never in the kind of equipment that Hendrick or Childress made in the 90s, and that he had the shitty luck he did.
