Man, those Land Cruisers are awesome! I have one and live in Southern Cal. I really wanted to get to Big Bear prior to the storms and hang out a bit. After the weather came in I decided I did not want to take those mountain roads on snow and Ice. I have only been to Big Bear once...and was in my Land Cruiser in summer. Glad to see you were able to help the lesser capable vehicles. Take care and be well.
1994 Land Cruiser 200K+ miles like a champ!! You probably would have been fine if u got up there just as the storm was coming in, Otherwise yah good call take the Cruiser when reopens there’s going to be plenty of snow to enjoy. Thanks for watching and comment 👍
Loved your video, man, so much to comment, but just wanted to point out I noticed you enjoy helping people and your experience in being ready for an adventure like this. I couldn't believe why so many people would venture up the mountains in a weather like that without chains on their tires, I'm sure they had a good learning experience. Great Video!!
Thanks EG ……! Most people we helped that day were big bear locals believe it or not!! No one was prepared for a storm of the magnitude! Not even the professionals!! Thanks for watching and your comment 👍
Went it get like this I put cables on the front and mud chains on the back and kick it into 4 lo and go nice and easy. Hopefully it warms a bit and stops snowing.
Good tip thnx!! This much rain and snow in SoCal extremely rare …… once in a lifetime type of stuff!! I’m glad I saw it! Sorry for those dealing with losses 🥶 thanks for watching and comment 👍✌️
Sure sounds like fun! My brother was trying to talk me into driving to BB via Burns Canyon - I figured we'd never get past 7k mark, definitely not that uphill climb spot without winching up.
Driving in the snow in CA is totally different than in the snow in Montana. In Montana, you are on your own. There aren't chain checkpoints or stops. Nobody uses chains. Up there, you put it in 4 wheel drive or you have all wheel drive and hope for the best.
Dang!! SoCal gets a little rain and everyone freaks. I haven’t seen weather this bad in Sunny SoCal in nearly all of my life!! Im sure it a normal occurrence in Montana!! Keep RipN stay well !!
Snow down south is always different than snow up north. The biggest difference, of course, is that drivers aren't used to driving in it (though residents of Big Bear are used to getting snow every year, I am speaking generally). Whether they are driving 4WD, AWD, FWD or RWD they are all far less likely to have winter tires on their vehicle. In the north, folks cruise around on snow and ice in Civics and Priuses without running into trouble due to common sense (from experience) and good snow tires. In the south, folks in 4WD are more frequently in the ditch (due to lack of experience and improper tires!) Finally, (due to generally warmer temperatures following a snow storm), snow in the south tends to partially melt and refreeze into black ice more commonly, creating treacherous conditions. Case in point, I see predictions for 40 degree weather in Big Bear this upcoming week, with freezing temperatures at night.
Great points !! SoCal people are only use to several inches NOT several feet like the SoCal area got pounded with. Thanks for commenting and watching ✌️
in CA there are so many stupid people that the chp and cal trans have to regulate who enters. otherwise, the roads would be totally clogged with clueless stuck city people. just to get where i need to be i usually have to pull several people out of the way.
Totally depends on when your on the road, Just after the snow falls it's not a big deal , but overnight when it's freezing it into ice , Well best have 4x4 And chains ⛓️
Agreed 👍 i made it up as the storm began. And it was SLICK glad I chained up! The next day mid morning drove around w chains no issues. Thanks for comment ✌️
I find it funny to hear the vehicles characterized by the make and model. What really matters is tires (snow tires, or chains, not all season or all terrain tires), whether there is 4WD or AWD, ground clearance, and in heavy snow, turning off the traction control. Keeping the speed under control (slow down on turns and descending hills), making gradual changes on icy conditions, and keeping long following distance will also keep you safe. BTW, the tie down points you used for hauling people out are not designed for vehicle recovery - they are only good for a few hundred pounds of force. They are designed for tying down cars on car carriers. It might be okay for pulling a car out of snow. The other thing that helps is getting some people together to push with their hands and leg muscle. We use it in Canada more often than tow trucks and recovery straps.
Wow, everybody’s driving around with fully inflated tires. I always deflate mine toabout 3/5 when it’s snowing you’re getting about 40% better traction but it will cost you a little gas mileage. Just don’t forget to re-inflate them when the weather gets warm.
@@jaysan7316 you betcha J I’ve been driving mountain passes my whole life and everybody thinks I’m an idiot, but I actually am in control. On flat ground I will deflate one tire till the tread length is equal to the tire width. Then I’ll measure it and do the other side the same then I’ll go to the back and do those also because the weight differential from front to back they’re usually three or 4 pounds different. Now low profile tires you kind of screwed you can take a few pounds out but not much. Take care and enjoy the rest of the snow. That was a great video. It’s nice that you helped out a lot of people.
That sounds like you have some good technique. Larger tire foot print and traction! SoCal rarely gets this type of weather. Sorry to say it but Most people don’t know what to do driving in the snow and icy conditions!! Thanks again!!!
Hey Alex, having the stuck car brake once unstuck prevents them from accelerating or sliding/ crashing into the rescue vehicle. Especially when on a very short recovery strap. Thanks for watching and comment 👍✌️
Hey Dave E Pie I went up In my HD Rear wheel drive twoBi Chevy as u saw chained up toward the bottom, day 2 morning drove around town no problem w chains. Day 2 afternoon and day 3 the 4x4 Land Cruiser NO chains. Thanks for watching and question 👍
Ha !! Pulled a lot of hills in my day but that time, not going to lie I was a bit nervous 😆 but I didn’t want to miss the storm of the century……!! Land Cruise 100% !! Thanks 🍻

What a great drive; for me it’s cathartic. I stayed away so crews could help those in need. So amazing to see though. Wishing everyone well up there!

Love your break down!! Your a Gentleman and a scholar 👍 I can tell !!
And the reason why they let all the reservoirs empty out is because they knew what was coming, And probably because they engineered it

Most people in SoCal mainly Los Angeles or Orange County cities don’t know what Winter Tires are ! FACT !! 😂
