    Thank you so much Sean for posting this. Someone I work with, who used to be Catholic, and I have talked about our different beliefs as Catholic (me) and Protestant. As a result of our discussions, I've been doing more research into Catholic teaching, so now I have my own 'How a Protestant made me a better Catholic' story (how awesome is that!!). On monday, I had the chance to talk to her again about our different beliefs. As expected, she disagreed with purgatory, and also praying to Mary, so I've been doing some research so I can better explain both topics. This video explains purgatory SO WELL, I had to keep pausing it because I couldn't write down the Bible verses fast enough! Thanks again for posting this very well-timed video, I'll make sure to share your channel with her if she wants to do her own research.

      *_" praying to Mary,"_*
      Since Mary is deemed to be sinless by the RC institute, she has been made into a deity. Praying to her is therefore IDOLATRY. You need to go look into that aspect of the RC religion.
      Jesus said "There is no one who is good except GOD". Only JESUS is declared SINLESS in the whole bible, everyone else falls under the description in Romans 1, Romans 3:23 and Psalm 14. It is plain and simple but the RC wants to twist scriptures to fit their idolatry.
      What would happen if you simply cut out Mary, just not pray to her, just not pray to the special saints, just not bring up her name at all, just ignore Mary and focus solely on Jesus? Try it and see.

    Hi Sean...just found your channel and I love it. I'm a Protestant, but I have many many friends who are Catholic. I've always wondered this. When I was born I required massive heart surgery. Before the surgery my grandfather's boss came over to my hospital room and told my parents that he paid for "priests to make sure I'd be okay". I never really understood this. Do you believe that money can save someone's life, or why do we need to give priests money to pray?

    • @gomezjkv
      @gomezjkv 2 роки тому

      You make a very good point. Praise God that you made it through your surgery. I assume you’re referring to the money Judas Maccabaeus sent to the temple to make atonement for the sins of the idolaters. Before the New Covenant the Leviticus priests could only make atonement for the sins of the people. Atonement is not what Jesus provided for the world by His sacrifice. Jesus provided propitiation for the sins of the world. Propitiation is the complete taking away of sins. Atonement is a memorializing of sins. The blood sprinkled on the alter was left there to be a constant reminder of the sins of the people. Building up over time, layer upon layer. You have been completely forgiven, my friend. Forgiveness of sins is not salvation. Faith in christ and the restoration of the Holy Spirit is salvation. Only one who believes in Christ and believes that God remembers their sins no more receives the Holy Spirit and has salvation.

      What your grandfather’s boss was saying is that he paid for Masses to be said. He wasn’t paying for the prayers as such but rather helping to defray the expenses incurred like electricity, wine, candles, cleaning and heating/cooling costs. At 5 or 10 dollars per Mass that’s a bargain given that many old church buildings are not very energy efficient. If the cost of having Masses said is a burden on the requestor the expenses are absorbed by the parish. Some religious orders ask nothing at all for this service. Glad you recovered from your surgery.

    Do Roman Catholics look forward to purgatory, does it give joyful hope in your daily life now on earth? This is a sincere question. How do you look at this future existence?
    As a Christian I look forward to the next life, while also being very happy to be on earth doing whatever the Lord has for me to do. When the Scripture says that to live is Christ, but to die is gain, that gives me hope. Where it says that to be absent from the body is to be present with Christ, I am filled with joy. But to see those things as meaning that I am going through a time of (further) purification ‘as though by fire’, I don’t see the hopefulness there.
    A second question, if a Roman Catholic would care to answer, would be how one knows, or if one can know, how long one will be in purgatory? What is the teaching of the church, and is it important to you to know? As indulgences are still available, and other means of shortening the time, it seems that a timeframe may be taught?

    Protestant here but looking into the Catholic faith. So I will state how I understand it and let me know if I am wrong. By Christ's death, burial, and resurrection we are forgiven and justified of our sins in Baptism and given the Holy Spirit. By the grace given in Baptism and the Eucharist and repentance we continue in Christ justified and being sanctified in our life. However, Purgatory is the final sanctification before Heaven. Not of our works, but by the grace of God. Thoughts? I agree that the Fire of God would be his love and it would be torment for those who hate him and deny him as Lord and Savior. Am I close here?

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres 3 роки тому

      You are close as far as the RC religious institute is concerned. But how does purgatory fit into what Paul says in 1 Cor 15:50-52 and 1 Thes 4:13-18? There is absolutely no place for purgatory there. Nor in the story that Jesus told about Lazarus and the rich man. Purgatory is an invention by the RC that directly led to the diabolical practice of indulgences that could be paid to get out of purgatory quickly or avoid it completely. Just how long do you have to spend in purgatory? Who will finally get you out of there? There is absolutely no description of purgatory anywhere in the bible except what the RC has made up and want people to believe. Escaping through the fire can be seen as simply living in a house made of straw that burns down and you happen to escape from the purifying fire. It is your deeds that gets tested and is found wanting but Jesus' blood has already made sure of your salvation so why do YOU still need to be purified? Remember our deeds after justification is earning us heavenly treasures and rewards in heaven, that much is clear from what Jesus said. The RC nonsense is diabolical.

    • @gomezjkv
      @gomezjkv 2 роки тому

      @@kevinrtres Yeah, how long. When I was a kid in the RC church I was taught that purgatory was a place of suffering. If a person has to spend a day or a week for a thousand years in Purgatory, what would that really mean in comparison to eternity? A thousand years is less than a fraction of a second compared to eternity. I remember getting hurt as a young child and thinking that there was no pain that could compare to that pain at that time. Some 50 years later I can honestly say that I have no memory of that “excruciating” pain. I don’t wake up every day and relive that trauma. It has no affect on my life today. What is purgatory supposed to accomplish?

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres 2 роки тому

      @@gomezjkv Thing is that as far as the bible is concerned, purgatory doesn't exist. As for the RCC understanding, it's a place where you are supposed to be paying for your venial sins (not the mortal sins). Venial sins can supposedly be "worked off" by suffering in hell, i.e. purgatory. But there's no guarantee that you'll get out, if ever! There's nothing in the RCC teachings that tell you just what it takes to get rid of your venial sins and who is going to pull you out of purgatory or who is going to decide that you've suffered enough.
      This is what makes it fictitious compared to the absolute certainty of Jesus' FULL payment for sins when he went to the cross. Anything other than that says that Jesus did not finish the job - in contradiction to his very own words "It is finished". The RCC nonsense is diabolical.

    • @gomezjkv
      @gomezjkv 2 роки тому

      @@kevinrtres I agree with what you’re saying. The biggest push-back I get from our Catholic brothers and sisters is that Jesus did not deal,once and for all, with the sin issue between us and God through His death, burial and resurrection. If a person does not accept the complete forgiveness of sins it would make sense to have to have some final purification. But, as you said, there is nothing in scripture that specifically says this. It’s the church’s interpretation that is the problem. The world has been forgiven but the world is not saved. That comes from the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit and that only comes through faith, making a person “born-again”. What do you think?

    • @kevinrtres

  • @kevinrtres

    So many questions arise:
    1. What exactly is this purification process? By FIRE? What does the specific catechism say?
    2. How long is this process going to take? Will it end when Jesus comes to get His saints from earth or will it continue long after?
    3. Who determines just how purified one needs to be in order to get out of there? Is God involved in the decision? If so where is that in the bible?
    4. There are a number of scriptures that simply makes a belief in purgatory null and void. For instance, Paul says
    *_"1 Corinthians 15:50-52 (English Standard Version)_*
    *_50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed."_*
    *_"1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (New International Version)_*
    *_13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words."_*
    There is clearly absolutely no space and time for purgatory here. Purgatory is an unbiblical idea based on mistreatment of the text and ignoring the context in which the supposed purgatorial process occurs. Purgatory also sets up the diabolical practice of indulgences in order to escape going there or to get your loved ones out of there sooner. There is no misunderstanding of that process. The priest (still) has the power to release someone from purgatory if sufficient merits have been acquired on behalf of the dead by someone who is still alive. Those merits were explicitly made up of payment in one form or the other when required. Why didn't Sean deal with the history and SUBSTANCE of purgatory as well? The clear, common understanding is that it is no different from the flames of hell. Only the lie is that it is temporary but you are not told how temporary, just that you will suffer till you are pure. But how is it going to make you pure?

    There does seem, to me, to be a disconnect between the church’s doctrine or belief in a purgatory and with the bible references cited to “support” it. This idea that nothing unclean can enter heaven, while true, was resolved be Jesus and we have been made clean, past tense, by the sacrifice that Jesus made for “the world” on the cross. We see this clearly in Act. 10:15. While the vision involved unclean animals, what God was trying to get Peter to understand was that there is no longer clean and unclean. The 1 Cor. 3 reference cited has nothing to do with burning up the sins of believers. Rather Paul is referring to other ministers of the Gospel who build upon the foundation he laid, “which is Christ”. He was referring to Apollos and the teaching Apollos was passing on, specifically in Act 19. The “wood, hay and straw” are the incorrect or incomplete teachings, not the sins of the believers in Corinth. No one builds upon Christ with sins. Christ does not “cover” our sins but instead has taken them away (Heb. 10:10). Anything else is simply empty religious works that have no bearing on our salvation. If you believe in Christ as savior and also believe that you have sins which need to be forgiven, then you reject what Christ did for you.

Jesus’ death reconciled us to God but our salvation comes to those who believe in Him as Savior. Those who believe are born-anew by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Purgatory, like many other Catholic dogmas, is based on a misunderstanding of the nature of Christ’s sacrifice. Catholics view the Mass / Eucharist as a re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice because they fail to understand that Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice was absolutely and perfectly sufficient (Hebrews 7:27). Catholics view meritorious works as contributing to salvation due to a failure to recognize that Jesus’ sacrificial payment has no need of additional “contribution” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Similarly, Purgatory is understood by Catholics as a place of cleansing in preparation for heaven because they do not recognize that because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we are already cleansed, declared righteous, forgiven, redeemed, reconciled, and sanctified.
    The very idea of Purgatory and the doctrines that are often attached to it (prayer for the dead, indulgences, meritorious works on behalf of the dead, etc.) fail to recognize that Jesus’ death was sufficient to pay the penalty for ALL of our sins. Jesus, who was God incarnate (John 1:1, 14), paid an infinite price for our sin. Jesus died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3). Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 2:2). To limit Jesus’ sacrifice to atoning for original sin or sins committed before salvation is an attack on the Person and Work of Jesus Christ. If we must, in order to be saved, pay for, atone for, or suffer because of our sins, then Jesus’ death was not a perfect, complete, and sufficient sacrifice.
    For believers, after death is to be "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). Notice that this does not say "away from the body, in Purgatory with the cleansing fire." No, because of the perfection, completion, and sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice, we are immediately in the Lord’s presence after death, fully cleansed, free from sin, glorified, perfected, and ultimately sanctified.

Based on your comment though it seems you are backing up an opinion you already had with verses from the Bible. I invite you to watch the video again with an open mind and an open heart. I’m no theologian so I can’t go toe to toe in an epic verse battle. At the end of the day both of our understandings of the truth will fall short of what Truth really is. But I am a Disciple of Christ and the very least I can do is, again, to extend you an invitation to look at purgatory doctrine once more with an open heart. Ask yourself the question, “Is it possible there’s something I missed?”
      God bless you Brother. Happy travels

      It's not an opinion but a scriptural refutation of the false doctrine claimed by the Roman Catholic Church. I do not follow man or their traditions but Christ and His perfect, infallible word. Purgatory is a place (after death) where Catholics go to get unrepentant sins purged or burned before entering heaven. Today, a Catholic can purchase Mass cards to help dead relatives get out of purgatory quicker.
      According to the Bible, purgatory doesn’t exist.
      Paul stated,” We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
      When believers are absent from the body, they are
      present with the Lord. A very good example of this is the thief on the cross. He didn’t receive salvation until his last few hours on this earth. According to Catholicism, he should have spent a long time in purgatory. However, he did not.
      Jesus said to the thief, “Verily I say unto thee, today shalt
      thou be with me in paradise.” The thief spent no time in purgatory. The big issue with purgatory is simply this-if a person believes in purgatory, he or she is saying that Jesus’s sacrifice was not good enough to cover his or her sins. This is to say to our Father in heaven, ”The sacrifice of your Son was NOT good enough.” I wonder what His reaction would be to that statement.
      Matthew 26:28 reads, “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the REMISSION of sins.”
      The Greek word for “remission” is afesi.
      Pronounce: af’-es-is
      - Strongs Number: G859
      1) release from bondage or imprisonment
      2) forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as
      if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty
      Once you have put your faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ,
      your sins are totally forgiven as if they have never been committed. What sin does the believer have that need to
      be purged in purgatory? Why would one have to get certain
      sins purged if Jesus, by Himself, purged our sins.
      Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high (Heb 1:3)

      John Trevett
      The *true* body of Christ is the Church.
      Colossians 1:24
      “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church.”
      The teachings of the Catholic Church are not of men but are teachings of God.
      With your logic, the bible itself is not credible because they are composed of “teachings of men.” No, the bible is the inspired Word of God through His apostles. Likewise the Church is the establishment of Christ, created through His apostles.
      Simple question, how do you know your interpretation of scripture is correct?
      There are currently 47,000 different denominations of protestant churches who all claim to have the correct interpretation of sacred scripture.
      Martin Luther was the first fallen Catholic who rebelled against the original doctrine. He is an example of why man cannot rely on it’s own understanding to interpret the scriptures as we are prone to error and deception. I invite you to please research the interpretations as they were *originally* intended through The Early Church Fathers. Their writings are now online accessible for free in PDF format.
      I would also suggest you research how early Christianity was worshipping Jesus for the 300 years subsequent to the canonization of the Bible.
      Only through the successors of the apostles and Early Church Fathers are we able to interpret scripture in it’s original context.
      *Suggested* *Readings* :

      2. Seven Ecumenical Councils (PDF)
      3. Writings of the Post-apostolic Christians (non-PDF)

      @@johntrevett2944 A Thorough refutation it is. You do seem to have all the answers and you have certainly convinced yourself. Most people don’t have the confidence to talk about religion with people they are close with let alone to strangers on the internet. I’m happy you are solid in your faith. Honestly it really is refreshing when it feels like most people don’t care these days.
      But back to purgatory. Honestly what is there to say when you don’t seem open to listening. I applaud your faith brother and I applaud your knowledge of the scriptures. I know it seems like you you’re fighting the good fight and trying to battle “the big bad Catholic Church” but remember these are people with faces, hopes, dreams, and families. Instead, why don’t we focus on the good and the Love both Protestants and Catholics do every day? Our God is the same God no? There’s not a doubt in my mind that Gods mercy is expansive enough for everyone.I also know His mercy’s totality is beyond my comprehension.
      Why are you angry with the Catholic Church?
      Again, I invite you to listen to the video again with the same openness I give you now. As much as I would love to throw Scripture at each other, I don’t think the Bible is meant to be a sword fellow Christians use against one another. Instead, it’s the Word. Jesus himself. So if we use it for anything else other than to unite, then aren’t we working against Christ’s mission? Instructing the Ignorant is a Spiritual work of mercy but can I ask, are you trying instruct the ignorant or just prove you are right?

    Thank you for this wonderful teaching, just one adjustment...Anglicans are not Protestants. We are Catholic.
