    Here are additional questions you might have:
    1. Do I use either of these in conditioning? Nope.
    2. Can I use them together? No - oxygen absorbers need moisture to work properly - thus they negate each other.
    3. Can I use both vacuum sealing and O2 absorbers? There's no need. Vacuum sealing does it all.

      Thank you for the additional answers. This video was great. To be clear, you don't use O2 absorbers and moisture abservers together, so I'm assuming you also would not vacuum seal and use a moisture absorber either, correct? Also would you say vacuum seal is superior to O2 absorbers when using jars?

    As far as O2 absorbers in a vacuumed jar I think is a good idea. The vacuum that those food savers pull is quite weak and there is still some O2 left in the jar. A perfect vacuum is something like 29.?? inches of mercury if I remember correctly and a food saver pulls they claim about 12 inches of mercury so there is some air left in the jars by the food saver pump. I also saw that the claimed 12 inches from food saver is very optimistic and the actual vacuum is much lower. I think most people have problems with the food saver standard size jar sealer is because the vacuum is so low. When they remove the jar sealer from the jar the lid pops off. With a good vacuum it should never come off by removing the jar sealer. Anyway thanks for sharing your video.

      Even after vacuum sealing my Mason Jars I still use an 02 absorber and never had issues.. It helps keep the seal as well and yes, there is most likely STILL oxygen in the jar (or bag) after using a vacuum... As cheap as they are, its all good..

    Use a small Ball jar and fill with rice leaving just enough space for your oxygen absorbers, this will keep most of the air out when you open it to grab absorbers to use.

    I make my own moisture absorbers. I use Vibrant Life Mini Crystal unscented cat litter. I measure whatever quantity I'm gonna do and put it in brown, natural coffee filter and tie the top off using a 6 inch piece of natural hemp twine and this method works absolutely perfect. I usually make the dessicant packs a little large in that i I put a heaping teaspoon in each coffee filter before tying it off. A four pound bag of the Vibrant Life cat litter is VERY inexpensive and it lasts like forever. you can buy larger bags but the Four pound bag is good for me. Just sayin'...

    Thank you for your great video. I have a question before I throw away many jars of fried dried onions (used for salads etc.. purchased at Walmart). If vacuum sealing is the same as using an oxygen absorber, that means that when I placed a moisture absorber into these jars and vacuum sealed them, that this is creating the environment for botulism toxin? I avoided using oxygen absorbers for this reason. I appreciate your knowledge in this area and would be eternally grateful for your opinion, before tossing a case of these onions in the trash. No one I had found on UA-cam explained about not using both oxygen absorbers with moisture absorbers in the same jar or vacuum sealing being the same as using an oxygen absorber back when I canned these almost two years ago. Thank you for your HELP 😊.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Рік тому +1

      Don't use them both - it becomes ineffective. It's not a botulism risk, but worthless to do.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 роки тому +1

      Ziptop bags are air permeable. You need airtight storage that is about the same as how many O2 absorbers you have - canning jars, in the mylar bags they came in, etc. They absorb any o2 they come in contact with.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      Dog food isn't meant to last three years. The fats and proteins aren't meant for long-term storage and can turn rancid over time. And the packaging isn't airtight, so O2 absorbers won't do well in them anyway.

  • @karennelson649

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  4 роки тому +1

      As long as you haven't bent it, it doesn't have a gap in the sealing agent, and it will hold a seal, you can reuse it.

    I would like to store "Biltong" (dried meat, but still contains some moisture) and thought that storing it in vacuum-sealed bags together with a moisture absorber and an O2 absorber would be sufficient to store in a pantry for around a year. Is this approach safe or is refrigerated/frozen the only long term storage ?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  10 місяців тому +1

      It's been stored for ages - but it will depend on your envirinment, too. Don't use both - use 1 or the other. Optimal storage is always freezing, but folks have been storing it for ages on the shelf if done properly.

    My dog & I are in the process of prepping for our thru hike of the AT this summer. Since it will be unfeasible to take her typical diet of raw food on this trip. I am going to use Ziwi dehydrated kibble and Stella & Chewy Freeze Dried Patties for her diet. In order to save space and to also allow for me to easily add water to her diet through her food I am grinding both of these products into a fine powder. This is the reason for my question. I began to wonder if by me grinding the food and then repackaging these products if they may become rancid. So, I have been trying to find whether I should add an oxygen absorber or a moisture absorber to the daily food packages that I am making for her. The process that I have in place to do right now is, 1) I am grinding the above brands into individual daily portions 2) I am placing the daily portion into a Hefty Ziploc bag 3) removing as much air as possible for the Ziploc manually prior to zipping it shut. 4) I am planning to vacuum seal each daily Ziploc bag in a Food Saver bag. So, my question is, is this enough to keep her food fresh over the 9+ months that the food needs to stay fresh or do I need to add a oxygen absorber or moisture absorber to my system. I really do not want this food to go back it is a $3000+ investment in her food for this trip. Thank you.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 роки тому +1

      Stick them in the freezer until the hike and you'll be fine. The rancidity will come from it being on the shelf.

      @@ThePurposefulPantry Just to be clear, I will be having these mailed to me every so often while on the trail. So, you are not advising to use either a moisture absorber or an oxygen absorber while in storage? That I should just freeze the vacuum bags and mail them as needed?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry

      Yep - They COULD do a moisture absorber when shipping if there are lots of temperature fluctuations, which is what most packing companies do.

    if i already open the bucket(with wheat berries in it), will the oxygen absorber stop working?
    I'm fairly new into this homesteading, and just started using mason jars for food storage. I have random questions, and hopefully you don't mind :). when Im storing my homemade bread made with fresh milled flour, I normally put silica inside the paper bag, hoping it will not mold quickly, either I store it in the counter for few days or in the ref or freezer., Am I doing it right, is it working or am I just wasting my money?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  3 місяці тому

      Yes - once exposed to the air, you need to replace the O2 absorbers. As far as the bread, I can't say - it might help if you're in a really humid environment, but they also are able to be used again, so it's not really wasting your money.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  5 місяців тому

      If you put oxygen absorbers into a jar, and then open the jar, you have to replace them if you intend on closing the jar back up. That's what vacuum sealing is for. Oxygen absorbers are for long-term storage when you don't intend to get into the jar except to finally use or refill from, and then you use another O2 absorber - they are one and done.

    Great video and I love your channel as I’m just getting started with dehydration.
    I can’t get Ball jars in Europe so the vacuum seals are not going to work in my hinged jars.
    However, I have an All American 921 pressure canner and a waterbath. Can I get the air out of dried onions, veg, dried dog meats etc by putting the closed jars in either waterbath or PC?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      No. You don't NEED to vacuum seal at all. An airtight container is all you need. So commercial jelly jars, spaghetti sauce jars, weck jars, any hinged jars that close properly is all that is needed.

    Is there anything that I shouldn’t put a silica gel pack in? I was putting them into everything I dehydrated to be certain it was dry.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Рік тому

      Don't use your silica gel packs to dry anything. They should be use to control any moisture being introduced as you open jars and moisture with the air coming in. Get your food completely dry, and if you feel the need, use the silica packets to protect them from any moisture at that point.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry

      Dehydrating is not the same thing as canning. So no, you can't put some fresh peaches into a jar and use an O2 absorber to store them. They need to be fully dried - with a dehydrator of some sort - and then they can store this way. Fresh food /cooked food cannot be stored this way without freezing or pressure canning. DRIED food, is different and this is how you store it.

      You don't NEED either one. But like I said - moisture absorbers control moisture - so if you are in a high humid environment and in and out of a jar of something a lot, you use a moisture absorber.
      If you want something for long-term storage and you will not be in and out of the jar, use an oxygen absorber to protect the food from oxygen.

    I have some dehydrated gourmet mushrooms that I want to store in mason jars. I accidentally got a bunch of oxygen absorbers (moisture absorbers are on the way)
    Moisture is the enemy of dried mushrooms, so obviously I'm going to use the silca packs. My question is, if I throw in both an oxygen and moisture absorber in each jar, would that work to remove both moisture and oxygen? My worry is that for long term storage the oxygen absorber will introduce moisture in the jar.

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 місяці тому

      Do not use both. O2 absorbers need a little moisture (naturally occurring, not what's in the food) to work well, and there is no need for both. An airtight jar is all that is needed. I never vacuum seal my mushrooms and they are always crisp, even years later. You can use one or the other.

    Hi! Which one should I use for famous amos style cookies? I’m planning to sell some in small plastic jars. I live in Malaysia and it’s really humid here. My problem is the cookies I bake retains their intended texture (crisp and crumbly but not too hard) for just a couple days before they start getting softer even if I store them in an airtight container. I’m leaning towards silica gel but I’m afraid they will make my cookies too hard. O2 absorbers I find a little tricky to store the unused packs.

The treats are usually done within three weeks, and I am always in and out of the mylar bag almost on a daily basis. @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      No - cured meats would be the better choice. Meat that is not cured is not reliably shelf stable, and cured meats aren't really good for dogs, I would assume (salt). The reason you can get most meats shelf stable from any store are preservatives of some sort. Rawhide, ears, etc., aren't the same as the meat.

    I know you stress neither is usually necessary, but...

    Your thoughts?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      No - botulism isn't the issue. The O2 absorbers won't work as well because they need a little moisture to work well. Botulism doesn't happen in an environment where the botulism spores aren't there to begin with.

  • @RickMc99

    Good video and thank you, but I am a little thick I guess, and still confused about something. :) I haven't begun yet - I am thinking long term storage - I would buy a dehydrator for beans rice, veggies, I don't know what else, and then store them - cool dark place - after (two part question) One: I would need mylar bags, and an air vacuum that works with those, and then add either a moisture or oxygen absorber as I sealed the bag, and then store them? Part two - someone claimed that washed and dried plastic pepsi or coke soda bottle can replace the bags - you put in the dried foods and moisture or o2 absorber? which? then, you would squeeze a little air from the plastic bottle, put the cap on tight, and seal it with something? Are either of those methods on the right track?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  Рік тому

      You can use mylar + o2 absorbers if that's your preferred way to store. You don't need a dehydrator to store dry beans or dry rice (uncooked). Follow what I said about what to use when - moisture absorbers for things you open a lot, O2 for things you want to vacuum seal and don't plan on opening. If you go the bottle route, an O2 absorbers isn't necessary as the bottle isn't necessarily truly airtight (air permeable over time, but many people use them for regular dry storage without anything. Just store rice, beans, or whatever, seal the top and store.

      If you are using a oxygen absorber, all it does is remove oxygen, not the air. And you don't use it along with a moisture absorber. If you are vacuum sealing, you are not removing moisture, you are removing air. Moisture absorbers are really meant for those jars you are getting in and out of a lot, not for long-term storage.
