Onboard Story: What it's like racing in the Rain

- The first race of the 2019 Blancpain GT Endurance series was incredibly wet and greasy which made vision and overtaking particularly difficult. I hope you enjoy this Onboard Story of my opening stint in the race.

Apologies for the sound mixing! Made a mistake with the upload. Watch out for the engine noise, it’s too loud compared to my voice over commentary.
No, it's perfect if you love the Ferrari sound :-)
That's what we like the most the sound of the cars 🙌 that's perfect 2 us... Loved it
It was hard to really even notice. Excellent video!
I seriously don't know which part you think there's a mistake, I watched the whole video and found it fine, only thing I would change is making the car sound around 20% louder while you're talking
It is perfect and beautiful! Love the sound of that car :-) Spent many hours behind the wheel of the Ferrari in Assetto Corsa Competizione - feels like my second home now ;-)
The like/dislike ratio really speaks for itself
dislikers are the ones he overtook
Driving in the rain sometimes is scary enough cant imagine racing in it lol
Yeah how are you not just pooping your pants the whole time? 😬
Driving in the rain is so fun! Not being ironic, I do love it looking for grip and balancing the car.
Missed chance to call this 'The Art of Racing in the Rain'
I would if I was the fastest guy on track... but I wasn't 😢
@@DavidPerel you did everything right
Driving a ferrari in monza in the rain..
Jealous!
I know, makes you sick
Eh lol some people have
All the fun.
2:50 “this move was super optimistic” lmaoooo polite way of saying full send
Posted it 😂
David Perel amazing racing I just found your Chanel and I’m gonna be checking out more content!
Hell of a lunge!
Man, These onboard stories are the best! Thanks Dave. Cheers!
Thanks JDM!
Love every bit of your content, just thanks for spending time on this!
It's a unique view of what it's like to be a racing driver, that is rarely shown.
Oh, this clarifies quite a lot the recent discussion about realism of wet physics in the GT sport - and I never knew about the off-the-racing-line thing
Yea it seems that the off-line technique is not as well known as I initially thought. I am surprised by that given that we see F1 drivers do it all the time in the rain.
@@DavidPerel
That’s scary man. Even though an intimate knowledge of the track is obviously vital, you still need balls of steel to trust the car and your fellow racers. Not being able to see if another car has spun or crashed in order to take evasive action to avoid a pile up is frightening. Good job man. Stay safe.
I was there that day, was quite wet and cold, but the race was awesome. I watched from the grandstands on the start/finish straight for the first half hour and then from the infield grandstants of the first chicane. Also saw that spin for the #4.
Crazy dedication Donat! I would have been at home, where it was warm, watching on UA-cam 🤪
Fantastic video David. The rain at Monza was bad enough that going outside was a challenge, let alone driving in a field of 50 GT cars.
Much appreciated Chris, means a lot coming from you mate.
15 seconds in, its giving me anxiety D;
Wet racing is so cool to watch but I couldn't imagine racing myself. Big props to people able to race well in the wet!
With enough practice you could do it mate :)
@@DavidPerel with you as a teacher I'd get it easy!
And even if you are a millionnaire, the prospect of writing off a 300k car (or whatever these beast cost) is pretty daunting. Racing sometimes feels like going to the moon. The awards are possible, but the outlay is incredible, certainly at that level. I suppose that is where sponsors come in. But I wonder how privateers go about this, it really seems like a way to sink an entire family if you are caught up in a couple unfortunate racing incidents. So tough, huge respect to anybody braving this
@@TheChannel1978 Generally... generally... The gentleman who race at this level can more than afford to do so. Often the actual quoted budgets from the teams include damage and there's also racing insurance which can soften the blow a bit.
Great vid! At least you have wipers. Poor F1 drivers 🙃
captain obvious ☝🏻
Watching this a few months late. David, i just have to say that you seem like such a class act. Really showing how it is, no cutting out your own small mishaps but instead explaining why and how they happen, and teaching about setup and driving style tips. Having just done my first rain stint in ACC, i finally have a little understanding of how utterly daunting it is to race in spray.
Like you just have to really hope no one crashes somewhere infront, you just won't see it. And how you guys even pick up the braking points so well, is just amazing .
Hey CN, thanks so much for your kind words mate. Genuinely appreciate it! Good luck with your future endeavors on ACC 😁😁
@@DavidPerel Thank you. It is quite the change rom PC2 and DR2.0 (still drive those too). Reminds me a lot of when GTR came out just a lot better. Would you at some point do something like a community event race?
To be fair, there was a green flag at the exit of the second chicane during that FCY confusion (20:57-58 you can see the marshal on the left hand side waving the green flag), I don't know if you didn't notice it or you just weren't expecting it.
Could see it clearly but also wasn't expecting it. But at the end of the day it was still my fault for missing it. Won't happen again, that's for sure.
I love that you don't have an intro for your videos, I really appreciate it. You're getting straight into it.
I was there that day, awesome race. So much happened that three hours felt like 30 minutes
So true mate. Thanks for sticking it out in those terrible conditions!
Rain is nothing for a motorsport enthusiast! :)
Brilliant video and interesting to compare with iRacing's new rain implementation.
This is a truly awesome video. Super informative for someone who understands the absolute bare basics of racing (me). I cant even imagine how crazy it is, going around Biassono at 250kph in the wet. Insane.
It's a lot of fun :)
Somehow, this is comfy to watch
*"Poetry in the rain."*
Perfect title.
Looked scary as all hell mate, amazing job once again. You must carry your balls around in a wheelbarrow.
I strap on a pair before I leave the pitlane
Wow I learned so much about racing in wet conditions. Never thought about oil on the racing line and that understeer at the beginning of the corner causes snap oversteer at the end of it.
Glad you found it useful dude
Amazing race
David "balls off steel " Perel
Definitely gonna watch the rest of this tonight. Love watching races in the rain.
Dude you were smoking them in that first chicane. Bravo!
Thanks Peter🙏
I'm surprised you could see anything in those conditions. Hectic!
We couldn't see anything mate!
After watching a couple of your onboard stories I decided to try the Ferrari in AC in Spa. I generally like racing GT cars but the Ferrari is a real pain to drive. The car is so on edge. Understeer into the corner and snap oversteer out of the corner. If you push the car to it's absolute limit it becomes nearly unpredictable. The R8 on the other hand is an absolute dream to drive.
Mad props for doing so well in the Ferrari that car is a handful.
It really is dependant on the setup you're running with the Ferrari. Were you testing it in AC or ACC? In ACC it's more sensitive compared to AC.
That was insane. Doing those speeds in the wet must be scary the 1st time.
First time in the rain was in Spa in 2015, there’s an onboard of that somewhere on my channel 😁
Thanks David for sharing the race with us.
See you at the Nürburgring.
See you there Mike!
Also the aggregate on the dry line becomes less jagged and smooths out over time which is another contributor to having less grip there in the rain. Love these videos! learning a lot about GT3 racing that I didn’t know
Love these onboard stories!
Also, I was there that day and I saw all those optimistic overtakes into turn one 😁
So cool to see how you've grown in your racing career Dave. From karting at Idube with you to this. Awesome! Dream come true. Keep up the good work and digging the videos.
Shot Dev! I remember those races, iDube is still one of my favourite tracks!
The commentary is great. Professional and down to earth at the same time. Very enjoyable even for a guy who has never raced. And those machines are awesome.
Love these videos, especially the more nuanced observations. It wasn't racing by any stretch but my first ever driving school track weekend was almost entirely in torrential rain. It both sucked and was brilliant at the same time. Definitely steepened the learning curve a bit, but even as a complete novice at the time I felt like learned way more than I would have in perfect conditions. Not sure how I'd feel in a $$$,$$$ GT car in a competitive situation though, lol.
The rain definitely focuses the mind 🙈
Kudos to all drivers especially David for this. Looks tough as nails!
Great content and i wish you the best following your dream! you are awesome mate! keep the GT sport content also running, its great!
Thank you!!
Rain in game simulators are still a joke…
Thanks for another great video David.
It's pretty good in Dirt Rally 2.0
@@lukemmurphy795 cars slip and slide like crazy
Car sounds pretty amazing downshifting for turn one
Absolutely 🎶
Another amazing video David. I actually almost forgot about this round. Super wet and unfortunately a lot of accidents
I still need to watch the live coverage of the race. I was so disappointed by our result that I didn't even want to watch this onboard footage, but in the end it wasn't so bad :)
Oh ok. Also can’t wait to see the video from Spa 👍
Cheers david, great insight into the realities and dramas of a wet race! You sure got mugged by that fcy farce but not the end of the world, great racing mate.
Thanks Billy 😁
I always love watching David's onboard story. Immersive narrations, and it taught me a lot about patience, being calm and confident in executing actions.
Glad you enjoyed it mate, thank you
I love your channel and your work, please do not ever stop 😊
3:21 That understeer really tells ya how slick it is. When a Ferrari is losing grip at 75 kph thats bad lol
Excellent driving the rain!
Thank you 🙏
I see a lot of Code: Browns! Great videos, I'd love to be out there with you!
The speed you carry in corners under those conditions is insane! Again, amazing driving, awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed it mate 😁
Best channel for the racing fans! Thank you David!
Again , awsome video! I'm hooked to your onboard videos! Would personaly love to get a direct link to the exact race that this was shot :) ( I know we can see everything on GTWorld channel ). Keep it up!
If you search GT World Monza 2019 it should come up first in the rankings (be sure to choose English Commentary)
@@DavidPerel Good idea though and a good way to plug your sponsor! (link in your description)
Dude you have some massive balls Ricciardoing it into the chicane like that with that Lambo. I was afraid he didnt see you and you would crash. Nicely done
Thanks mate, it was a bit of a risky lunge but it was mostly because I misjudged my braking point a bit. I got lucky.
Wow, your braking skills are amazing! You are really good at entertaining with your commentary, too!
Thank you Argo
When day is dead and you upload right on time of dinner... U da real MPV...
😂😂😂
#watching all the way from Jamaica.. Keep up the good work on good content
Awesome man! I need to visit your beautiful country one day
It's here 4 the taking#Jamaica#Island#Love👍hope 2 meet u some day 👍
Thanks sooo much again, for this kind of sharing David. It's both entertaining and tuitional. Really disappointed about that tire decision, would've liked to see you and your team, up front! Well, let's hope for another race hey.... Kind regards, Tony Mouton in Cape Town
Great braking 😍
Full attack 😂
That’s hard work
Hard work but fun work :)
More videos like this please :)
Thanks Fabii, I post onboard stories almost every week 😁
This is great! thanks for the effort to make these videos. As for the SOUND...thats how racing cars are LOUD!
Glad you enjoyed it Eric!
Crazy mate! Thanks for the video. Relevant for get sport soon lol
No problem Zodi :)
You are a beast! Good luck on your further championships!
Your amazing driver .would love to have a try at it myself.
Fantastic video Dave! Thanks for sharing!
Ascari David!
Insane Dave! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I watched the whole video I absolutely loveeeeeeee formula 1 and cats period love love love
Is that a glimpse into the next GT update ? ;) thanks for this video. Learning a lot from you!
Fantastic footage mate, and great to see a professional at work. I hope that all this info helps me on gt sport, and if not I'm blaming you. Cheers buddy, great content
Christ, that looks absolutely intense, i bet you have a taught bottom all that clenching David :D
A few code brown moments during that race 😂
Great work man, really, you need to test ACC, looks very similar to the real life (at least in my opinion). Your opinion will be very aappreciated.
I love your videos so damn much man! So much insider info, and a fellow saffa famalam! It's so cool watching you make the dream come true.
One criticism: Could you pleeeeease turn the levels up on the commentary parts? - When you let us listen to the engine, it's set SO MUCH louder than the commentary parts that i have to lower the volume, and then turn it back up when you commentate again.
Not serious, but it'd be one more plus to your content's already awesome quality
Thanks Max, 100% correct, I made a mistake with the levels and only realized once the video was live. Will be better for the next one!
@@DavidPerel Thanks so much for the reply! Awesome. Again, love your stuff! Your on-board stories are possibly my favourite racing vids. So immersive, motivating and informative. You're doing something so that no-one else is doing and we're so stoked to have you to let us in behind the curtain. Keep it up!
David, this is great stuff! Thank you for all yours "Onboard Story" content.
Thanks mate, really stoked that everyone is enjoying this stuff!
Damn dude! That's really intense!
I don't know how you find your breaking markers with such poor viability.
i thought motorway driving in the rain was dodgy enough, but this is something else.
I feel more scared on the motorway to be honest 😂😂
Awesome content
Thanks Christian
Every time i watch your videos i have an urge to sit and drive ACC :D Keep up the good work man, and hope to see you in game :D
I feel the same when I watch onboard videos mate. I often watch something on YT and then immediately go look for that combo on my PS4 😂
Real impression
Same here 🏁🚗🚗🚗
That's me up front 🎉🍻
Good luck for this year !
Thank you KG 🙏
Alternative title: Dirty Dave Takes a Bath
Hahahahaha
I've always wondered what wet lines you'd take around monza because it has a few different lines. Great overtakes outside of turn one, the braking looks so difficult in the wet.
Thanks Luke, the Ferrari seems to have good braking in the rain. So gotta make the most of it :)
I've done some kart racing in the rain, it's very challenging. At least in the car your shield doesn't fog up so you can actually see where you're going!
It can fog up if your AC fails... that happened to me at the Nordschleife 🙈
@@DavidPerel I thought it was bad having that happen on a kart track I knew very well. Driving nearly blind on the Nordschleife would be terriffying
Thanks for great insight and great footage, commantate. It would be more than great if you could also add the team radio!😀
Good vid man
Thanks Spika
Hey i just found your channel today im loving it i subscribed this looks very nerve racking driving at high speeds in the rain with so many turns 😬🤯
Hi david, intense or
What lol. Its great seeing
You and your team playing
The long game. Your race
Craft in the rain is awesome.
You make it look easy, when
Its anything but. Fab content.
Subbed ❤
Thanks for the sub mate!
Fab video great commentary awesome driving 🤟🏼
It's called ascari chicane!
Watch till the end 😜😜
awsome inside info David! THANKS!
Name of that last chicane is Ascari. :P
Every kerb you touched looked like you were going to spin off! Well done mate driving at these speeds with 0 visibility requires a good pair of nuts
In the wet it's possible to be quite aggressive with the curbs :)
@@DavidPerel Because you are usually running a softer suspension, usually have higher ride heights, or for another reason? You mentioned in the video but I didn't quite get the reason you said. Thanks!
Awesome Racing David. Felt a bit like Gt Sport there in the beginning of T1 other Great Racing!
Shot man!
How well does the ABS work in the rain? what happens when you press the pedal all the way down? would be interesting to know...you are doing a great content btw, love it :)
The ABS kicks in quite aggressively in the rain so you try avoid it as much as possible. Happy you’re enjoying the content, thanks for watching!
Just casually overtaking the #72 ferrari with the most formidable driver lineup on the grid...
I got lucky 🤪
Great work as always!! Request you to add positions if data is available
Unfortunately it's not possible without hours upon hours of work to retrace who went off / boxed etc.
Fantastic vid, love the rain. Also rain will be coming in next week's GTSport update. =D
I saw the rain update in person at the Nurburgring event, it looks good but the drivers were using the regular racing line to go fast :(
@@DavidPerel Hope you can give your input and knowledge to Kaz and the development team somehow! I tweeted to Kaz and some polyphony members this vid about Max Verstappen and wet lines after the Nurb event. ua-cam.com/video/aP5ZDNGcJdc/v-deo.html but no way of knowing if they looked at it.
Hey man have you ever thought of uploading using a 360° camera? Great video again as always keep it up!
I have mate but my team wouldn't allow me to add extra cameras in the car. This footage comes directly from our onboard camera's which we use for analysis and coaching.
David Perel aw well maybe one day they could upgrade that camera into an indoor 360° camera then we could get even juicer videos.
David Perel no please don't. 360 cameras on a 16:9 screen make the fov unbearable
Please no.... 360 cams are the worst...
Awesome onboard! Love the stories! Question, you mentioned the GT cars have traction control, do they have/use ABS too?
Hey mate, GT3’s have TC and ABS and GTE’s only have TC :)
Lap 19... At 14 seconds in.. 😨😨😲😲🙇🙆💪😀😀.. Marvellous save😒🙆😀🎉👍
❤️❤️❤️
U deserve ur fans.. David u earn them.. Money can't buy💯%
Could you have an insert recording of your backside camera? I just think it would give an interesting view especially when you've passed someone on how they drive through or the line they take when trying to come back at you
Unfortunately we don't record that content mate
Oh and at1750 with that turn in I thought about tapping you.... But different class😅
Evil man 😂😂
