  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Coming Soon!
At 15 years old, Cabel McElderry was a skinny kid with crooked teeth and a funny name Cabel, like many kids he struggled with self-esteem and a lack of confidence. Weight training and fitness became his vehicle to overcome these personal challenges and influences a career choice that would change many lives through empowerment and self-improvement. By 18 he was managing a local gym, by 23 he was considered to be one of Canada’s top amateur bodybuilders. This sparked his personal training career which over the next 15 years he would personally train thousands of people to dramatic physical transformation. He’s eliminated prescription medications, helped individuals avoid surgeries and even had a few people insist he, “saved their lives!” In 2007 he opened Red Deer’s award winning One-to-1 Fitness, hiring and educating trainers to impact even more local lives and recently opened a new location in Edmonton, Alberta. He’s been the Red Deer Advocate/Life’s longest standing columnist writing on health and fitness for more than 13 years and for the last three, added Personal Fitness Professional Magazine to his career portfolio. In recent years Cabel was a nominee for “Canada’s Top Trainer” and added to the list of “North America’s Top 100 Fitness Entrepreneurs,” and even produced his first documentary about overcoming physical limitations aptly named “CHANGE the Movie.”

Two people he didn't know changed his life thur their kind words to another. We should all learn from this ~ spread kindness where you can ~ you never know the impact it will have on others. Pay it forward.

Genuine kindness, kindness/politeness alone without truth behind it could lead to miscalculation of reality.

Do or Die. That was the turning point. You can be inspired, you can have great support, you can be talented, you can believe in The Secret, but if you don't want it enough to die trying, none of it really matters. A mexican leader of the revolution is known to have said "I'd rather die on my feet, than live a life on my knees". Well done Mr. McElderry, the best is yet to come.

The part of succeeding without the safety pins really reminded me of The dark knight rises, climbing without the rope.
Great talk, well spoken. I will try to apply it to my own life.
    Thank you.

Ha that's quite a compliment to be compared to my favourite superhero in his most difficult moment, that wasn't planned, but I swear that story is 100% true. It was hindsight it was a really dumb thing to do, but it really was a turning point, when I racked that bar after not 1 but 5 reps I never felt more powerful. Glad you you enjoyed it.

I find that dis-affirmation can be incredibly motivating too. When people tell me I can't do something or that I'm wrong about something, but I know that I'm right, it motivates me to work harder and prove them wrong.

Reminds me of one of my sons, who would keep a case of water, protein powder, creatine etc, in his vehicle, instead of beer and drugs. Took his own lunch to school so he could eat healthy

What's sad about the squat story is the fact that someone at my gym didn't 'survive' the same issue and instead crushed both his legs with the bar falling and now has a min of 80k in medical debt and a solid year of recovery

It takes a real disconnect, coupled with a breathtaking level of hubris, for characters who look like this to present themselves as fitness professionals qualified to school others. Fitness TedTalk after Fitness TedTalk it's the same story: the humiliatingly unfit daring to lecture others on how to achieve fitness.

Your measuring fitness by his appearance? Nice trick, can you teach us how to hide behind the comments section and draw speculative conclusions as well? Ever see a 380lbs lineman take 40+ snaps in a football game? You obviously know a lot about fitness since you had the courage to stand up in front of people and tal... oh wait, you didn't.
