what is the difference in the material that makes one eye pin good and the other not good?
is it the material..or the gauge??

Hi Anna, we got an answer for your question.
The difference in the material that makes one eye pin good and the other not good can be both! Using the wrong Metal (1) and wrong gauge (2) can lead to frustration for the maker and a finished product that does not last for the buyer! If you want a good solid loop that will forever hold then it is important to also learn about the temper (3) of the metal too. When we teach wire work this is one of the first things we teach the participants as we want their creations to last forever. WRONG METAL (1) Some metals are more brittle than others and do not withstand much movement. I find that for base metals the best is brass (Copper and Zinc) which tends to be quite resilient and malleable. Some pins are made with less costly materials which include Iron which tends to be brittle and breaks much faster which is why you can only lift and lower the eye once or twice before it breaks. WRONG GAUGE (2) Wires come is every thickness from very fine, easy to bend, to very thick which is too difficult to bend. Selecting the right thickness of wire is critical to the overall strength of the finished piece. Most beads have a hole that is 1mm or slightly larger. If you can use an 18ga wire then this thickness is solid enough to hold even if the metal is untreated in any way (dead soft). 20ga can in some cases also be used without problems but as the wire gets thinner to 22 - 28ga or thinner then the eyes do not hold unless the wire is treated to make it stronger. Too many people use wires that are just too thin and do not have the strength they should. METAL TEMPER (3) If the holes on the materials you are using are very small and only the thinner wire passes through then it is important to buy the wire that has been treated to half hard or full hard temper. This means the wire has been work hardened (usually by drawing is through smaller holes in a drawplate many times) so the eyes are strong enough to hold. If using 22ga to 24ga I would recommend always buy the half-hard wire. For 26ga to 30ga then it is best to use the full hard. Plenty of online stores sell eye pins and headpins today with the different tempers
