Fishing on Long Island is great across the board but if there’s one spot that stands tall above the rest - it’s Montauk. Located on the easternmost tip, and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, this coastal hamlet is actually home to New York State’s largest charter fleet. So why is the fishing in Montauk so good? It’s a mix of year-round action, multiple species to hook, and an incredible community of captains and anglers that reside here.
The main target anglers come to Montauk in search of is Striped Bass. You’ll find specimens reaching up to 50 pounds or more in the waters off of Montauk point during the spring and fall runs. Cast a line from shore or cover more ground by hopping aboard a charter fishing boat.
For an easier-to-boat fish that tastes just as good, set your sights on Fluke. These fish require more strength than technique to hook, making them an excellent target for the whole family. If you’re fishing with kids, you can also add Porgy, Black Seabass, and Tautog to your list of suitable targets.
If you’re up for a real adventure, head out into Montauk’s deep offshore waters. This is where you’re going to find two fierce opponents to face off against. The first are Tuna. Bluefin, Yellowfin, Albacore, and even Bigeye all make runs in the deep Atlantic waters off the coast of Long Island. Reeling a Tuna in from the deep is no easy feat but we promise it’s more than worth it.
These same deep waters are also where you’ll find a variety of Sharks. Battles with these beasts can go on for hours, but before you put the work in make sure the fish at end of your line isn’t one of the many species that’s prohibited in New York.
To reach these grounds, hopping aboard a charter boat is a must. It’ll take at least a full day to travel to and from the productive areas along the continental shelf, and get some good fishing in. Even if you’re staying closer to a shore, being on a boat with a licensed captain will allow you to try several different techniques and check out different areas for your best shot at success.
Nonetheless, if you’d like to stay with your feet firmly planted on the ground - don’t worry! Montauk is considered the surf fishing capital of the world, and with beaches as beautiful as the one surrounding this town that should come as no surprise.
Now that you’ve watched the video, you’re ready to go fishing in Montauk! To find the charter that’s right for you and your family, head to FishingBooker.com or download the FishingBooker app to book charters fast and easy. Start planning your Montauk fishing trip today!

Surfcasting is way better in MTK than on a boat. Boat trip will run you $500 plus per trip. After two fishing trips a season; you could of spent your hard earned $1000 towards a brand new van stall, nice st.croix rod, simms waders, korkers , every super strike needle, darter, and bucktails which would last you multiple seasons with multiple outings and multiple fish.

Hi Patrick, thanks for watching 🙌. Investing in your own equipment is certainly a great choice, especially if you're dedicated to turn fishing into a hobby. However, for beginners just starting out or for others that don't get out on the water as much as they'd like, heading out with a knowledgable captain can offer a more guided and supported experience. On a charter you'd also be able to approach deeper waters and target a wider range of fish. This, along with top-quality equipment, GPS, FishFinder, fuel, etc. are all included in the price of a charter. Nevertheless, surf fishing in Montauk is excellent and should definitely be tried if you've got your own gear. We hope this provides a bit more context. Tight lines 🎣

Hi Leandro, thanks for watching! The best month to go fishing depends on which species you're targeting and your own personal preference. In general though, Montauk is known for excellent fishing from late spring through early fall, with the prime months being June through October. It's at this time that you can expect to find various types of fish, including striped bass, bluefish, fluke, porgy, black sea bass, and more. Some species like striped bass and bluefish are more abundant in the fall months (September and October), while others like fluke and porgy are more prevalent in the summer months (June through August), so it really all depends on your preference. Let us know if you need any more info. Tight lines!
