    1:16 thanks GooseMan, someone had to say it
    2:16 i wouldn't say the 7 and 8 string guitars are the problem as much as bad musicians who don't know how to use them. they are good for a nasty low breakdown and other similar things, but when the entire song only uses 3 strings and they are all the lowest, then it becomes a problem. 2:58 yeah, early 2000s is where metalcore peaked, i wish i could disagree but he's right. and this is coming from someone who only started listening to metal about 4 years ago so it's not nostalgia "i grew up with those bands"

    Whenever I played in bands, I was always the odd one out because I have no tattoos and just wore regular clothes. Also in a new band now will be releasing stuff in a few months. It’s heavy with breakdowns, but also some melodic leads

    Hot take of my own: at least with Architects, I do not mind this crystal clean production approach, as it makes the songs more easier to get into.
    But I hope that when they eventually part ways with Jordan being their producer, they can take what he's done with the album, whilst tweaking it and possibly making it less sterile and have that rawness, if you get what I'm saying

    12:12 Is a good point, but entirely genre dependent. Nobody gets into deathcore for the lyrics - we want a wall of seething hate and lots of rees. Death metal? Absolutely - Johan Hegg is a perfect example. One of the coolest vocal tones in the genre, but I can understand every syllable without having to look up the lyrics. Dani Filth was pretty intelligible too.

    • @joshuaquintanilla552

      I agree. Go listen to some slam. I’m pretty sure most bands just lay vocals down and write lyrics later. Wouldn’t want to know what they’re saying anyway. Sounds cool af regardless.
      Am getting a little tired of the acrobatic competition in deathcore though. Depends on the band.

    • @TundraCH

      It depends for me, I can't stand slam toilet bowl vocals with no coherent song structure. But, I do like slam adjacent deathcore with a solid structure. My limit is that fine line between deathcore growls and slam toilet bowl vocals.

    My hot take is: If you only listen to "-core" subgenres, you're missing out on a large part of the metal that's out there
    I listen to more subgenres of death metal and black metal than core music. However, I got into extreme metal thanks to metalcore and deathcore. I still listen to those genres (dont get me wrong, i like core subgenres so much, some of my favorite bands are Underoath, Lorna shore, TDWP, Shadow of intent, Within destruction, etc), but lately, it's been very difficult for me to enjoy metalcore. The subgenre is oversaturated with bands that sound the same, and the only thing metalcore musicians seem to care about is the breakdown. I know it's a necessary characteristic, but there's less and less innovation. I think this issue stems from the fact that even the members of metalcore bands don't listen to many metal subgenres outside of core. That's why I believe there's so little innovation. Sticking to breakdowns is boring, and that's why criticism of metalcore is so common. (Deathcore is also oversaturated with similar bands, but at least lately, deathcore is still making an effort to innovate.)
    Imo

  • @syntezjaofficial4240
    @syntezjaofficial4240 14 днів тому

    8 guitars can be cool if you use all strings, Jakub Zytecki uses these guitars in a cool way.
    I love breakdowns if they are unique. Even bands like Evanescence or Within Temptation had them on last albums and it sounds cool. But you can have breakdowns and guitar solos like While She Sleeps did.
    Sleep Token for me is just prog rock/metal depending on the song.

  • @Deletirium

    "Bring back sweeps..."
    GAWD YES. Enough with the monotonous chugging bridges, give us back some melody. 100% of the reason I'm such a devoted Currents fan is all those little tiny ascending arpeggios Chris throws into nearly every song. It's not a breakdown, it's not a full solo, it's just seasoning, and it's absolutely awesome. Make it as heavy as you want, but throw in a little sauce for us too...

  • @Charmander_R27
    @Charmander_R27 14 днів тому +1

    Breakdowns make the live performance waaaaay better most of the time. Especially if you like to be in or near the pit. I think there's a trade off between the crowd and the Spotify listener with these decisions.

    • @ryanbollinger1759
      @ryanbollinger1759 14 днів тому

      I second this. I go to live shows all the time and Metalcore/ hardcore/ Deathcore shows are significantly more fun to see or be a part of. The breakdown is the part of the song where the pit goes absolutely hog wild, it’s where walls of death begin, and the buildup is always fun to get hyped to.
      The average Spotify listener that doesn’t go to shows isn’t going to understand that. When people say breakdowns are predictable, it’s like “DUH, you stupid clown. It’s a buildup and a drop for a reason. It’s the same concept with EDM bass drops, they’re fun.”

    • @joshuaquintanilla552
      @joshuaquintanilla552 14 днів тому

      I don’t disagree, but I think a lot of the breakdowns, especially in deathcore have gotten so over the top.
      Breakdowns can be a lot of fun when listening, but so many of them now feel like they’re being forced to be as massive and crazy as possible for the sake of reaction content.
      As for live, a band that knows how to interact well with the crowd doesn’t need to rely on breakdowns to get the crowd going wild.

    A lot of bands don't even really do albums traditionally anymore. Like the "album" is basically just a compilation of singles and b-sides from the last couple years. Falling in Reverse, Bring Me the Horizon, Electric Callboy, etc. Hell, Falling in Reverse's latest album had a single that came out 5 years prior on it. It makes sense in the modern media ecosystem. 99% of listeners today don't sit down and listen to an entire album, so it doesn't always make sense to release music that way if people aren't even going to listen to half of it. You're wasting resources.

  • @gatling216
    @gatling216 14 днів тому +7

    I think complaints about production get overused. The average listener doesn't know enough about production to know when something is over or underproduced. That requires a level of music nerdery above and beyond the casual listener who just wants the bleghs and the breakdowns. But because people who do know what to listen for use it as a complaint, and because saying "I dunno, the vibe's just off" isn't going to win any arguments in a comments section, saying something feels overproduced tends to be the go-to. It's okay to say you don't like something without having to justify the reason why. Enjoyment is subjective, and no one gets to tell you that you're musicking wrong because you're not having fun.
    And from the folks who do know what they're talking about, a lot of the time, it just feels judgmental. "The vocals are too far back in the mix" is a clear, understandable complaint. "It sounds too clean" feels more like a justification for not liking something. If you like your music raw and untouched by the production booth, there's stuff out there that can cater to that. 80s punk and 90s black metal come to mind. That's not what most modern metal is about, though.
    Can metal be overproduced? Sure, probably. And hell, bad mixes are certainly a thing. But when someone whips out the "sounds too clean" complaint, it comes off as "I don't like it and if you do, you're having fun wrong" more often than not.

    • @Deletirium
      @Deletirium 14 днів тому

      I've never understood that complaint. It sounds "too good?" Then go find a live version. Post production is every bit an art form- it's not like the studio guy just ran it thru a few ai filters and called it a day.

    My spicy take: Metalcore will die eventually (I give it 3-4 years tops) and something way more interesting will emerge out of the ashes.
    As someone who is quite a bit bored with the genre for the last year, I feel like the label "Metalcore " confines a lot of bands and even the established ones shy away from experimentation because they're afraid to alienate their fanbase. Bands should move away from the generic verse - chorus - verse - chorus - breakdown - chorus structure and try something different to stand out of the pack.

  • @saughs

    I agree with most of these hot takes, I'm tired of over-production, unnecessary breakdowns and bands dropping half the album before its release. I haven't been listening to "big" bands lately because they become less unique with each release. There are a lot of bands out there that no one talks about, that are doing something different and innovating in certain aspects, but the ones that get recognition are the ones that if you don't read the name you can't differentiate
