- Steve Slaton is a Republican candidate for Arizona's House of Representatives, but now controversy surrounds his military service record.
Republicans in northeastern Arizona have questions for Slaton, accusing him of stolen valor.
Slaton carries an endorsement from Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers. Neither of them will address Slaton’s claims that he's a Vietnam combat veteran.
However, several veteran groups say there’s a clear difference between military records provided by the LD-7 candidate for Arizona Rep. in Navajo County, and records obtained from the National Archives.

If his records are falsified , He should step down.
Should be imprisoned for up to 6 months like the law specifies.
If he presented falsified documents once, what's to say that any document that he provides going forward is also not altered? He needs to either show proof that he was right, or bow out.

Very true, I was Navy, but the Pilots were ALL officers . Pilots May earn warrant officer rank and fly. My army brothers know far better than I do, but crew chiefs are typically enlisted men.

Why any military person who swore to uphold our Constitution would vote for a Party that has a platform of over 900 pages called "Project 2025" which aims to roll back our country's laws to the 19th century is ignorant and dangerous. He wanted to be regarded as a combat veteran but couldn't in the context of his Korean service. It kind of reminds me of the many claimants to have been Civil War veterans surviving well into the 20th century. Some did it for pensions, some to have a personal claim to fame. In this case most likely the latter.

In one of his tweets slamming the people calling him out, he went so far as to invoke the treatment of Vietnam vets on their return to the states, claiming that the way he was being treated over this situation was reminiscent of the way those soldiers were treated. It's beyond insulting to every one of those veterans - the ones who returned home to ridicule and hatred, and the ones who died in or because of that war. He could have, should have been proud of the service he gave, yet it wasn't enough for him. He could have, should have owned up to the lies, yet he doubled down over and over on his lies. Instead, he hides behind his office door like a coward. Wendy Rogers is no better. She asked for the investigation, yet ignores the truth when its handed to her. Just like Mr. Stolen Valor, she even doubled down with her support of his lies. They've put ego over ethos, and neither are worthy of respect.
Rogers should have her veteran status stripped.

Just FYI, the idea that Vietnam vets were "spat upon" when returning is, as far as anyone can tell, a complete myth. Exhaustive newspaper searches turn-up zero reports of such incidents, and you know that, given the generally rabidly-pro-war stance of most media of the day, any such event would have been national news.
That's not to say vets weren't horribly treated by their *government*, but the idea that hippies were the ones abusing them is utter propaganda, deliberately concocted after-the-fact to distract from demonstrable right-wing treachery.

Vietnam vets are currently in their late 70's to their 80's. My father is 96 and served in the military during the Vietnam war. 1973 we were pulling out of Vietnam.

I served with the CIA, CAG and Seal Team 6. Hardest deployment ever. (Worked on same base as them.) Thats how I read most veteran politicians like DeSantis when they speak about service. Talk about what you did not who you served with or alongside.

Anyone that serves in the military. Whether in non combat or combat deserves our respect. By claiming a position or medals not received diminishes his service. Personally after 10 years in the Army, the cooks and supply were my heroes.
Stolen valor is considered by veterans to be the lowest of the low. No veteran will vote for such a person.

This candidate and another one was recently in the news being accused of stolen valor. They each had legit military service. It's really self destructive to embellish it, with the very real risk of being found out.

@@vihtoripuurola3775 - Yes, a DD Form-215 can be issued which is an update to a DD-214 and can be used in place of the originally issued DD-214 to show additional awards, times in service, dates, etc.

I bought my first firearm ( 9mm handgun) at 63 years old. My storage unit was broken into. Spent an hour with a Deputy doing the report. Started taking about his sidearm (glock 43). Shared with him about my search and eventual purchase. He replied that I'm now an American Patriot. Scary!!! Still the same person . Just saddled with the obligation of being a responsible gun owner.

This may be hard to accept, but almost everyone who claimed to be a military hero really wasn't. Even Clint Eastwood would mention his Marine service during the Korean War, even though he spent his entire service as a lifeguard at Fort Ord. Decades of excessive military worship have caused Americans to forget what a real hero actually is.
Another example: R. Lee Ermey became THE face of the military, even though he never saw any combat. Outside of his 2-3 years as a drill instructor, he was a marine airfield tech. He even got a medical discharge due to 'injuries during service', even though he was never shot at or shot at anyone.
Ermey never claimed combat.

This is not a defense of the candidate but the archives are frequently missing info. This is why soldiers are cautioned to maintain copies of all their paperwork. I ordered my docs from the archives and much of the material is missing to include everything from when I went back in in 2003. I do, however, have pictures to validate that time frame.
Yes, but there is a huge difference between items that are MISSING from a DD-214 and FALSE items shown on a DD-214. Apparently the DD-214 of Steve Slaton is showing FALSE or FRAUDULENT information.
Did you not sit down with the person typing the DD-214 to verify all you have done and go over it? It was part of the out processing. They even said, "make sure what you have done is on it, because it will be very difficult to get it added once you exit the military." Even the last day when I went to get my DD-214, they said "Look at your DD-214 to make sure it is correct, because, when they sign it, that is it." I looked it over said it was good, they signed it and gave it to me.
@@tonysmith7702 If you lose something, or your ex wife burns your DD 214, you may need to have a new copy sent. I served shortly after the Vietnam War so the technology is different today but much of my records from archives were of poor quality or missing. Your mileage may vary. BTW, I do have photos to show my service.

So, they interviewed this guy from the "Guardians of Valor", Jack Dona. And Mr Dona states, and I quote "From what I understand , there is a difference on the DD214 from various Veteran organizations. So, Mr Dona has NOT seen the real DD214? Mr Dona is only stating "What he heard".
Really? I have no respect or courtesy for anyone stating they received medals and did not... But, Im suspicious when the "Witness" on National TV states he hasnt seen the DD214's (Which is a military record).

He did an analysis of the DD214 Slaton provided, and indicated where it had been altered after being issued by looking at typefaces, etc.
@@TheKenPrescottShould have used a typewriter of that era … DD214 was using Pica in those days, along with military abbreviations for all awards, and critical information that is easy to verify and a red flag for forgeries that fail to have proper abbreviations in the correct boxes of the DD214.

I look at sus DD-214s as part of my job, and I request live copies from NPRC when I have reason to believe that the document was altered. My favorite was the Frankenstein 214 for a guy getting out of the Navy where the character of service block referred to an Air Force instruction and not the Navy personnel manual...yeah, that idiot went on the debarment list.
I joined the USAF in the fall of 1973. I was recognized as a Vietnam ERA serviceman which ended January 1 1976. I knew he was lying as soon as heard them give his service dates. I recently found out the US Social Security Administration that my ID was stolen and I've started to look into if my service record was also taken used. What a bitch!
