What to Sow in August for an abundance of winter vegetables

- in todays episode I show you what to sow in August. What to sow in August will ensure you have leafy greens all through winter and spring. From kale's to cabbages. there's nothing better than a fresh vegetables throughout those cold months. The No-dig raised beds don't necessarily need to be 'put to sleep' for winter..they can be used.
I also harvest an abundance of polebeans aka runnerbeans. The trug was full to the brim
Channels mentioned today:
@doras.allotment
@TheFarmyardGarden
@dogontheplot
I also discuss the failures in the polytunnel including the tomatoes. It's been a disaster of a season for tomatoes.. never mind.
On the positive note, the flowers are all in full bloom now. The dahlias and sunflowers and sweetpeas.
As mentioned I used my containerwise module trays, filled with good compost and sowed all my winter brassicas & coriander for leafy goodness in those cold months. They will hopefully germinate in the greenhouse and will be potted on in the next few months.
I decided to move the French beans I've grown in 30litre buckets outside to benefit from the goodness of the rain. If the weather gets cooler, I can also move them back into the glass house..

Supporting you makes me happy, here's my comment and I hope it benefits you well.
Another winter suggestion: can you explain the best way to watch your videos? You noted something about retention on your videos. How do I avoid lessening the value of my watch time? I prefer to open various UA-cam videos at once and have a line up to watch one after the other, but I feel like opening it another window might hurt your record or opening it and pausing it at any point. I'd love some education on how to support you best.
Kathy, I wish everyone wanted to learn this ! So thank you! So, to help a channel you love. Each video. Watch from start to finish. If you choose not to skip adverts even better. But i understand. Never fast forward parts as that massively destroys a channel..people dont realise. Rewinding and watching parts helps! This tells youtube you didnt like the video. Commenting straight away after the video and liking it. Sharing the video also helps a channel.
All these things help so much!
For example, because I've asked viewers to like and comment this week It's told youtube people have watched and commented. This then makes youtube push your video to new people. Which can then hopefully gain you more subscribers. Which then tells youtube again you are being liked.. it snowballs to being shown to more people and more people.
It really does help so much.
@@TheGrowUpChannel That's good information. I have several UA-camrs that I so appreciate and enjoy absorbing their knowledge and the thought of weakening their investment...well that sucks! I will do my best to watch you in a manner that helps you grow (up, hahaha). 😁
@kathyv3909 that's really thoughtful and kind of you! Thank you.
Enjoyed a lot thank you for the escapism my beautiful Mummy stage four terminal cancer and my dad’s dementia has accelerated. It’s such a tough time and my Allotment and start of my UA-cam channel has had to take back seat but after the visits to my dad in a care home now and caring for my mum in her own home and trying to juggle my business as well viewing your videos helps me relax, even my Hubby who’s not a Gardener at all is able to sit with me and chill so thank you Danny so much
Please take care of yourself. Gardens and youtube always has to take second fiddle when family come into play. Look after yourself. Danny 🌱
Sending you warm & positive thoughts from overseas ❤️
God Bless you all.Try and make the best of every day.
your life right now is incredibly stressful. It is good to have an escape, and Danny is a good one! Take time with your husband to do something fun. It might sound impossibly but even going for coffee, just the two of you will be a needed break. Take care of yourselves, caretaker burnout is all to real. lifting up your family.... ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🕯🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
It is a while since I saw one of your videos Danny! The rain might be falling, but look at all you have accomplished, Maybe a nice hot bowl of soup would lift you up. thank you!
Superbe vidéo 😊

I planted a fig tree last year...I haven't any figs yet...nice to see you picking figs... Nice video 😊
Thank you tracey!. If the tree is still small id advise digging it up in autumn and planting in a large pot . Will produce more figs that way.
@@TheGrowUpChannel Thank you
Great video as always Danny! Loving what you've got going on!
Thank you Tomos and pob lwc with your channel! Danny 🌱

Glad to see I'm not the only one daft enough to garden in the rain.😂...plots look great 👍
😂😂😂 oh it's always been apparent how daft I am...
Shelling peas and broad beans last week, fantastic crop, and definitely do them straight after picking.
Marvellous! Always better to do it straight after picking 😊
Thank you for filming in the rain💦☔️!
Youre welcome. Won't be a regular haha! Howver winter and autumn are so rainy here. Danny 🌱
Your plots are amazing, I have a backyard Mini farm in AUSTRALIA which is fairly small but we get over quarter tonne of edible veggies each year, love it. Keep up the great work.
That's amazing! What an achievement to produce that much fresh food for the home . Thank you very much! Danny 🌱
Had my first fig today from my tiny 2 foot high fig tree delicious
Ahh great!! Every year it'll grow and grow and you'll get more and more figs. I'll be doing a video on pruning Fig trees soon!
Many videos I listen to while working a few like yours I take time to watch. Thank you for all your hard work
That's a really nice compliment. I try to be as visual as I can! Danny 🌱
Thanks for sharing re the fig tree. We have one overlooking our new garden and wondered why it had no fruit - now I know why! X
Hopefully you'll get some ! Danny 🌱
This is the first time I’ve seen your videos and you deserve a comment for working in the rain. God bless.
Aww thanks Lyn! That's really kind of you! Danny 🌱
Oh Danny, I love watching you and also listening to your song choices. You brighten my day. Thank you so much. Keep smiling 😊
totally agree. Always such beautiful music and lyrics
I spend a long time choosing songs. I'm glad you enjoy them! Thank you again. Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel and it shows 🙂Much appreciated/
No one can accuse you of being a fair-weather gardenerDanny! Good grief! You put me to shame hehe. I have to say the plots look so lush in the wet, but picking anything is the rain is a mission.
I have a runner beans variety suggestion for you. I changed my red flowered runner beans to Scarlet Empire rather than the classic Scarlet Emperor. They stay tender even when a little bit too big. And don’t go as leathery . Nice tasting bean. I have struggled with my runners this year mainly because the snails have preferred them to the climbing French. I have them in the same bed, the runners are near my neighbours rather overgrown raspberry bed next door and it is full of snails so the runners are getting hit. Still getting some but I have many more French beans at the moment. Hope you get some sunny days to spend with Leo this week.
@Dawn_Grows_Veg aww thanks Dawn! I have heard a few swap to empire! That's helpful. Thank you!
Danny- your plot is booming! You do such a great job showing us everything. Hugs
Why thank you Rebecca 😊
I love the live shows and seeing gardening legends talking gardening is a wealth of knowledge to listen to.
I'm so pleased to hear that! They were fun and so many gardeners with different views and tips! It was so helpful to me too!
Keep going even in the rain
Haha I must be mad 😊
Thank you for all you do Danny. I'm learning so much more please keep growing. X
Thank you James! Means a lot. Danny 🌱
Hi Danny. Time for me to call in a favour. Remember when I did a successful rain dance for you? Well now I need some of your delightful, refreshing rain. If you are able to arrange that I would be so very grateful to you 😉🤣
Thanks for another superbly entertaining and enjoyable video. I hope your beans tasted all the better for you harvesting them during the rainfest xx
HAHA! Consider it done Jean 😂 thanks for all the rain! Glad you enjoyed it and the beans were marvellous!

Haha thank you Sue. These comments really do help me plod through. Sometimes... just know.. I film just for you guys! Other times for me haha but this rainy one.. was 100% for the viewers haha as I was so wet 😂😂😂 I do enjoy it though. Come rain or shine ❤️ Danny 🌱

Ha ha ha - how did I miss that bit?! I'll check my calendar ;)
HAHA you'll be there LOL
I agree, the beens when smaller dont even need peeling and the plant pushes out more flowers. Mine have fone tremendously this year.
Aww amazing! That's good news though!
I love your videos so much, I hope you continue to create.
That's soo kind! Thank you! I'm curious what you like about them so much? As I don't want to remove things people are enjoying. I have no plans to discontinue.. I just find time is so precious at the moment... but I enjoy making them ❤️

Two varieties I grow in red flowered R. beans are Polestar and Firestorm. Both brilliant croppers and very tasty being string less if picked before reaching 8 inches. Happy gardening 🙂
Thank you!!! A few have said firestorm. My quest to fine some...Danny 🌱
I am in the SE in Kent and would love to swap some of our sun for some of your beautiful rain. Plants love rainwater much more than tap. Your plots look good as usual. I already subscribe to the excellent youtubers you mention. I am happy you will continue the 'lives' this winter. Take care.

Inspired to plant instead of waiting till spring..
Ahh welldone Steve! Best time to take on a plot is not.. use autumn and winter wisely. Get it ready for spring. Danny 🌱
That little greenhouse has been an excellent addition and I'd plant some late beetroot and carrots to grow over winter.
Carrots are on their way... didn't consider beetroot....
@@TheGrowUpChannel I always put late sowings of Carrotts, Beetroot, Parsley in my tunnel as they grow a bit smaller but taste better and having fresh Carrotts in January and February is nice.
@ibrstellar1080 that's a great tip! I'll do some in the tunnel!

Wonderful! Keep your face known at a few sites. Pop there on weekends in the morning if they have a committee and make friends. You'll have a better success rate of getting a plot. Trust me haha
Great video as always Danny I'm harvesting runner beans & courgettes very yummy x

What is all of that precipitation falling from the sky! 😱 I haven’t seen any of that in what feels like weeks. I have 15 large storage butts dotted around the plot here, and all bar one are empty. That last one is running out now too, and I’m reserving the last of my rain water for the 🌶️ 🫑 🫐 It’s proper grim here, it’s so dry. Hence I am deeply envious of your situation in this episode! 😍
Oh wow! That's madness. I have to admit I'm not a sun lover. Not as much as some. Linda could bake in it.. I'm suffering on times haha! I don't mind the rain.. but boy was I wet!!! Danny 🌱
Nice to here a local accent. Rain, rain and more rain.... I've had to teach my carrots to swim here in Swansea 😂🏴😍
😂😂😂 the rain has been a test hasn't it! Lol
Hi Danny. As I sit here at 23:40 hrs in my comfortable armchair, having come from the allotment at 10pm, I agree with you about the heat, the wet and the muck. My local LIDL has got used to me turning up in my muck and know where I've just come from laugh. I do watch your videos and have watched your lives. I'm here in the background with a like and occasionally a comment. Don't get up on any ladders as I think you've been in the wars enough this year. I've had my first figs this year. I can get used to it and perhaps, with a glass of vodka. Anyhoo, great update Danny. Elaine 🌱 🌱

Hi Danny. I really look forward to your videos. You show us the successes and failures alike. You have a great personality and wear your heart on your sleeve, which I love. Your allotments are beautiful. This year, I've tried growing carrots in egg boxes. It's the only year I've had any success, so I'll be doing it that way from now on.

Well done to you, out in that rain picking your vegetables 🌻🌧️🫛🥬🥕
Thanks Wendy! I was a soggy mess I tell ya! Haha! But I battled through . Thank you for commenting! Danny 🌱
I pinched a cutting from my brother’s fig tree in Corfu. Had it for years and this is the first year I’ve had fruit. Albeit just 2 figs!
So if I get more fruit next year, I will make jam. Maybe a chutney could be good too, as we love cheese 😅
Hey, 2 figs is a good start! Each year, the harvest will increase ! It sometimes comes down to pruning too Good luck with your Fig tree, thats great news. Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel thank you 🤩
I’ve never pruned it before and just been kept in one pot. So I’ll research when to prune and if it needs a bit of a bigger pot now.
Loved your video definitely going to get a fig tree for my new plot 👍
Ahh fantastic! Yes definitely get one ❤️
Hello Thank you for the video, I've been growing white Emergo runner beans and there doing very well.
Thank you! A few have suggested emergo! They seem a winner for so many. Danny 🌱
Plots looking brilliant in the rain ❤
I'm very very lucky to have that plot. It's beautiful all year round. Especially in the snow ❄️
Olà Danny, I love to watch your videos about your plots. I am living in Portugal so there are a lot of differences between your gardening and mine, but that is just what makes it so nice. Learning and getting inspired, I love it.
Hello Portugal! That's so nice of you to say! I think sometimes people.gte wrapped up on their own area of growing and not learn other climates which.. as we've seen is changing for us all. Our climate isn't the same as 30 years ago. Winters are milder and pests are overwintering.. not to mention the rain and hotter summers are back. Thank you for watching! Danny 🌱
Enjoyed

Wow insane amounts of rain ☔️ we have had 2 days in all of July and maybe a few forecast for August. You’re getting loads of harvests and sowing done. Aww that's lovely! Bonkers ain't I 😂😂 thank you!!!
Hi. Loving your videos. Wish my figs were as good as yours. Maybe next year. Keep up the good work.
Encourage your figs to produce earlier crop by pinching out the tips of branches when the figs are pea sized, good pruning is also essential too many branches trying to produce fruit strain the tree we don't have a long enough warm weather to ripen all the figs, unripe figs should all be removed at the end of the season,in warm climate these figlets will mature in to the first fig harvest be it a small one,as most figs produce two harvests a year, but this is England, also as figs don't need pollinators to set fruit, in colder areas if your tree is small enough you can help ripen the fruit by covering the tree with fleece or thermowrap, that's worked for me and it kept the birds of too, hope that's helpful,🥰
Why thank you very much Anna!
Loved your presentation. Lots of rain here in Ireland. Will think about planting up a fig tree in a large container. Keep up the good work.

Haha absolutely 😂😀
My runner bean archway in the garden looks lovely! Although I cannot seem to grow a brassica, every year I try and fail. Thank you for all the inspiration 😊
Oh that's some good news!!! My advice would be.. grow them in module trays (if you aren't until they are established and strong plants) and also lime the plant hole (use gloves) before planting and firm them down with your feet. Brassicas hate soft fluffy soil. They will rock and get stressed. Which then makes them go to flower. Also a good veggie mesh to net them from day one. I never risk them. Keeps out all the pests. Hope this helps. I think I'll record a video all about brassicas next year 😊 Danny 🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel I'm planning on putting some veg into a county show in September, not sure I'll have much to show at this rate! Thank you for the advice 👍

Hope you have dried out now?
