I don't mind it as much. I'd rather have a great actor for a character that's either younger or older then the character then an absolute mediocre actor that's the same age

i would like to add it is most likely also due to labor laws in relation to children since teenagers have these pesky things called schools and home work that would take away from their acting, and also well added to that there are laws dealing with how long they can act for, and you would need some martial arts experience i would guess so that bumps up the age a bit

    "Too boring"?
So, Tzachor thinks plot and character development is boring? Sure, Power Rangers is primarily an action show, but like with anything, there has to be a backdrop to it and mean a lot more than just punching, lasers, and explosions. That's why Zeo, In Space, Lost Galaxy, Time Force, SPD, Jungle Fury, and RPM are considered to be some of the better seasons of the show itself.
I'm not necessarily a big Power Rangers fan, but I do think that anything action-focused can have decent storytelling as well as great action.

+Sachi from SAO Episode 3 I totally agree. Even as a cheesy kid's show, there are some themes that made the show more mature than many people think.
And I agree that an action show can have a great story and decent character development to it, as shows like Burn Notice, Chuck, the Marvel Netflix shows, and the 2010 reboot of Hawaii Five-O are great examples of this.

Saban stated in an interview from a few years ago that they skipped Go-Buster because the zord toys were far to complex and BOA could not adapt the 'zord builder' gimmick to them. They then skipped ToQ-ger because, according to Saban, trains are just not popular enough here in the states. Also only the villain robots were called Megazords in the Go-Buster. The hero bots were called Buster Machines.

    • @xgray2012
      @xgray2012 7 років тому +20

baltmatrix That is in fact, true. I mean, the toy sales said it all in Japan. Plus, Go-Busters did not really have enough spy gears and gadgets to sell as toys compared to Kamen Rider W, which actually did have the better spy gears and gadgets to sell as toys in its' line--up. As for Toqger, yes, that is also true. I mean, technically speaking, we do use trains for ways of transportation for business and fun. But for a cultural history, yeah....trains are not nearly as popular, in the U.S. as they are in Japan, regions of South America and in parts of Europe. It's more of a cultural thing.

Go-Busters had a LOT more deliberate homage to Power Rangers than just the morphing phrase being "It's Morphin Time." The series used a lot of the filming techniques & tricks that Power Rangers has made iconic in your mind, Linkara.
The plot, main characters, & tech of the series was made to be deliberately appealing to the Western Sentai fanbase, with the outfits being made out of leather & the visors on the helmets being sunglasses, the henshin device was refered to as the Morphin Brace (wrist-mounted if you were wondering), the plot being very much like a fusion of elements from RPM & Go-Onger, the characters have pretty heart-wrenching backstories (attributed to the fact that the main showrunners came from Kamen Rider, which tends to be geared towards an older audience than Sentai), the main antagonist, Enter's, leader is a giant floating head a la Zordon, etc. It really did try to pay homage to Power Rangers since PR runs on TV networks in Japan dubbed into the language.
Also, Enter was adapted into Heckyl in Dino Super Charge, as they share a number of similar personality traits.

Wow, James Bates and I practically had the same ideas regarding what could've made megaforce or any new power ranger series better. Allow stories about personal growth, tie the anniversary season to more things from the mighty morphin era, and Yost returning as the mentor would have been perfect to help explain the ranger keys. After Yost's character left Zeo, it could have been implied he was working behind the scenes developing new powers and weapons for the various ranger teams and that after Zordon's death, he pretty much took up his mantle and worked to maintain the morphing grid. For a ranger series concept I came up with, Billy is first seen as the Rangers' teacher while he sizes them up for recruitment, the command center is his ship hiding underwater and his lab has a collection of display cases with various Morphers and weapons and a picture of him with the original rangers on his table, sort of a museum paying homage to the last 20 years of the franchise. The concept also called for the Zeo Crystals to make their return, for Billy to have a half human daughter from Aquitar who becomes the sixth and appropriately blue ranger. Even an idea of Blake Foster returning as Justin (still in possession of the blue turbo powers) to team up with the new blue ranger and even Billy morphing into the original blue ranger one last time and all three defeat one of the villain's generals.

Few years ago I was writing a Power Rangers fanfic, going through history of all seasons until Dino Charge. I turned Billy into "Legacy keeper". He left the Zeo team, while working in secret on Turbo powers. Few years later he helped Lightspeed Rescue create their Power Rangers. Billy was also the mastermind behind harnessing Dino Gems energy into Dino Thunder powers, giving Tommy clues to find them and train new Rangers. In Megaforce, Gosei was actually Billy in disguise who created Megaforce powers. Billy was never to reveal himself until the big finale with my "Legendary Battle", where energy from Morphin Grid that Megaforce powers gathered helped to restore Mighty Morphin powers, permanently and assemble all Ranger teams to fight with Mavro's Armada, which was also revealed to be created from remains of King Mondo's Machine Empire. I never finished it and I lost my writing while moving unfotunately. I hope to rewrite it someday.
I believe that Billy as a mentor to "20th Anniversary Team" was such an obvious and logical choice that anyone, except for Tzachor thought that might work.

Wow, listening to the first 7 minutes got me so angry. If you watch panels and interviews, you can tell that everyone on Megaforce, especially the actors, were wanting something better than what we actually got.
The Morphing Grid plug would kind of make sense why Troy wasnt as emotional as the others, because he probably wouldn't be fully human. In Goseiger, the super saiyan blast made sense for Alata being at angel, so its good that they weren't fully just adapting that scene without an original concept. And these characters needed development desperately.
But wow, Johnathan really screwed them over. And just listening to the quote, "it sounded too boring," made me cringe. Having a show that is entirely action and no character, that can get very boring really quickly.

I know it wasn't stated in the video, but I just wanted to point out how iconic it was for this season to have a Black actress play the Pink Ranger 😊.
Throughout the franchise's history the Pink Ranger has (for the most part) played a very important role.
After the Red Ranger I feel like Pink is the most important, and usually plays the love interest to Red.
Actresses who have donned the costume have mostly been white and on rare occasions Asian.
This was a nice change to the formula.

The things that were a tribute to Power Rangers in Go-Busters:
    1) All the mecha's for both the good and bad are called Megazords.
    2) The morphing call.
    3) Also, the Morphin Brace has a sunglasses theme similar to Jungle Fury, except the Go-Busters don't actually put them on like the Jungle Fury Rangers. However, the sunglasses do form the visor lenses when transforming.
    4) The Go-Busters can wear their suits without their helmets. This is similar to how the first Power Rangers frequently appeared helmetless; though the Go-Busters weren't the first Sentai to do so (Go-Onger constituting a recent example).
    5) The main villain Messiah is very similar to R.P.M.'s Venjix as they were both computer viruses, not to mention very impatient and angry.
    6) Messiah is a floating head from a different dimension, just like Zordon.
    7) The Go-Busters have Super Powers (super speed for Hiromu, super strength for Ryuji and super jumping for Yoko) they can access to fight better. This is very similar to the heroes of Dino Thunder, S.P.D., or Operation Overdrive.
    8) Powered Custom is similar to the Red Sentinel Ranger, a mode in which Mack, the Red Overdrive Ranger, combined with the supporting robot (Sentinel Knight).
Those are the OFFICIAL ones but there are a lot more that I felt were in the franchise.
    9) Each of the Go-Busters had their own robot friend that would MOST OF THE TIME stayed in the base and watched the team fighting like Alpha 5.
    10) Both Go-Busters and RPM feature computer viruses as the main villains.
    11) The monsters of the week were similar to the monsters from the second and third seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which were also made from random objects.

Also dont forget - they had GAVAN on for a few episodes - maybe translate that as one of the two prototype suits for the Go busters armour [the other being the hybrid gobuster/enter armour - you could say it was stolen and "upgraded" by him].
As for the series - howabout an alt universe of RPM where, at the cost of their parents, Venjix was contained in a dimensional bubble before he could take over, with Enters job now to try to free him.
This could open the door for some of the original RPM cast to appear as cameos [albeit as non rangers] - hell if shes available even bring back Olivia Tennet as doctor K and have her as the suit inventor/tech/general tech head.

Linkara, I have a suggestion for a History of Power Rangers bonus episode - it would be cool if you laid out your theories for the Legendary Rangers' background story from "Countdown to Destruction" through "Forever Red" and all the way up to "Dimensions in Danger". You've already done some speculation in the relevant seasons, but I think there's now a better idea what things happened that led to past Power Rangers teams connecting, restoring their powers, and what they may be doing while new teams have their seasons. Maybe you could get more into things like Alpha 6 and 7, how/when Gosei could have been mentored by Zordon, interactions with HyperForce, how Thrax's origin makes any sense, when each destroyed power might have been repaired, and when Tommy might have received his Master Morpher (and if there are any candidates for which character(s) could have created it - maybe Sentinel Knight or Ninjor?). I think we can now also determine that the Sentai "New Powers" seen in SMF are of Power Ranger teams from other dimensions that the Legendary Rangers must have encountered before SMF, thus allowing access to new keys...somehow. Just a general speculation video on the story mainly glimpsed in anniversary specials would be a great addition to your series!

You know, something I realized something that I really like about the this season that I don't think has happened in any other season of Power Rangers actually gives this season a unique edge is the relationship between Shelby and Kendall. In every other PR season (except for 1s with just 1 female ranger) the female rangers were either 1) already good friends from before becoming rangers or 2) became friends rather quickly after becoming rangers. However, in this season, Shelby and Kendall started off at odds with each other and not really considering each other friends, but over the course of both seasons we have seen these 2 grow closer as friends and work well together as the show progressed. And in all honesty, looking back on all the previous seasons, unless the 2/3 female rangers already knew each other before, I found it hard to believe that they became friends so quickly despite their different personalities and not having many episodes devoted to building their friendship (the exception of maybe SPD but even then it didn't get much focus). Props to both actresses and the writers for this and I hope we see something like this again in future seasons.

  • @Tamashikiri

About the discussion about skipping Go-Busters at the beginning of the video, from what I've heard, the reason people thought it should have been adapted isn't because of how it "homages" Power Rangers, but because Toei allegedly designed it from the ground up to appeal to a Western audience, making it kind of funny that the main reason for it being skipped over in Power Rangers was because of its lack of success in Japan (which one could attribute to it being tailored to a foreign market rather than its domestic one).
Reminds me how the mecha anime The Big O was also designed to be a show for Western audiences, and also flopped in Japan, but its English dub was a huge hit on Cartoon Network, so much so that a second season was made solely because of its success in the West. Kind of makes one wonder if something similar would have happened if Go-Busters did end up getting adapted.

+Protodood X Ah, that makes a lot of sense for why it would be hard to adapt. I was scratching my head when Linkara's take on why Go-Busters would be difficult to turn into a Power Rangers season boiled down to, "the suits looks different," but I can see the problems now that you've explained it. Thanks. ^_^

+Protodood X I mean power rangers has gotten around having human sentai generals before (Turbo, Dino Thunder, RPM, etc.) usually but filming new scenes for fights and base footage (which is typically the standard anyway). The helmet thing could be an issue, but they've done matching shots before so it's not a deal breaker imo.

it's not impossible that is true but with apparently how much they spent on Megaforce, i can see why they skipped a season that would cost quite a bit too adapt

That moment when Super Sentai scripting is so clean the guy reviewing Power Rangers can read it. The first monster the team fights is, in fact, the embodiment of the Ice Age, one of the three Deboss Legion monsters representing the forces that killed off the dinosaurs...and also the causes of those forces, because that's how Deboss rolls. The other two are Pestilence and Meteor.

I really, really wish they had made a full 3-4 minute version of the Dino Charge theme. There IS technically a full version, but it doesn't include any new lyrics. It just has the TV version, the end credits instrumental, and then the chorus again. It's easily the best theme song since Dino Thunder.

Honestly, it felt like Megaforce's director had ADHD, what with nearly every episode needed something "cool" or "new" like shaking keys in front of someone's face, regardless of how it fits or flowed with the season. Zordon wasn't busting out a new zord or power every fight, only when it was deemed necessary and he had time to analyze and plan for it.

The funny thing about Go-Busters, is that it was planned to be easily translated into a Power Ranger series. The Rangers were "spies" and they were going for more hybrid readiness. But it was poorly received in Japan, so thats probably why it didn't come over.

  • @starbird3939

I kinda do like that Albert does refuses to be a power ranger.
It is a great lesson for kids about knowing limits and that it is ok to bow out when things are just BEYOND capabilities. A lot of shows go for the “you can do ANYTHING if you put your mind to it and never give up”... which can lead to hurting the person because they went beyond their physical and/or mental capabilities.
For example, a kid is trying to lift weights. He struggles lifting 35 pounds. Instead of taking a breaking and working at a lighter weight to build up enough muscle and endurance TO lift 35 pounds, thenkid “powers through it”, resulting in a muscle injury because he pushed his body too hard.
Same thing with trying to power through without sleep, eating that one bit of food too many (causing the person to vomit or have a bad stomach ache), making too many commitments... it is important to inform kids “Know your limits and it is ok to say no.”

Weird facts about the Sentai, it’s toys and the megazord. In the Sentai, there was a large amount of samba music, and the megazord, is an oddity among combinations of zords modeled after organic creatures, as it doesn’t have a Dino head on its chest or legs, as the trex head is on the right shoulder, and the tail on the right. Also, to anyone wondering what the white faces on some of the monsters are about. In the Sentai the monsters were modeled to represent emotions or emotions brought out by certain means. And in Japan, the main megazord got multiple different versions, including a small MiniPla model kit, in multiple different colors, the standard, gold, glittery translucent yellow. Also there were toy batteries that transformed into some of the zords.

Akibaranger, a parody spinoff of the Super Sentai franchise also had a reference to Power Rangers as well. The actor who played Dekaranger (SPD's source material) made a cameo appearance in one episode and said to Akiba Red that he needs to head out and take part in a Power Rangers convention. That was obvious. The Go-Busters thing is something I don't need if it was intentional or not.

Let me just say I have real nostalgia for this season Dino Charge was the first season I ever watched back then I was never really interested in the series but when Super Megaforce ended that’s when I started seeing commercials for the next season and when I saw it was gonna be Dinosaur themed that caught my interest because I always liked dinosaurs and I started watching it and I became a fan of Power Rangers and I also watched some of the previous seasons on Netflix and now I’m a Power Rangers fan.

Tone wise Go-Busters did take a lot of inspiration from RPM (yes RPM, not Go-Onger) what with a similar villain and Zords and things like that, but I can't think of much more than that. I actually considered the whole "sequel to RPM" idea myself as well, so hearing that someone involved with the actual show thought of it too fills me with joy. Overall though I'm fine with it never having been adapted, I don't trust the Neo-Saban era to have done it any sort of justice and I was already heartbroken by how badly Gokaiger was treated.

Dino Charge was the first season since perhaps Time Force that had more than one actor with some fighting/gymnastics/acrobatics/etc. training to play a Ranger. And it pays off when they are not constantly replaced by stunt-doubles in unmorphed fights.

5:02 Got these from TV Tropes:
    - The main villain of the first half of Go-Busters is a computer virus in the shape of a floating head. Power Ranger fans can easily draw comparison to Zordon and Venjix.
    - Civilian powers (from several Disney-era seasons, particularly Dino Thunder and Operation Overdrive). Further, the Busters got their civilian powers and were chosen to be Rangers because their parents are the ones who engineered the tech - right out of SPD.
    - Sunglasses as morphers (from Power Rangers Jungle Fury).
    - The team takes their helmets off somewhat regularly, which does happen in Super Sentai (in Go-Onger for example), but is much more common in Power Rangers.
    - One arc deals with the villain general successfully getting some of the items he was after, is awfully similar to the major arc of Power Rangers S.P.D., with Gruumm and Morgana getting one item after another in order to unleash their own Big Bad Sealed Evil in a Can.
    - The gold member of the team is an eccentric genius scientist believed lost when the Big Bad was unleashed, but turns out not only to still be alive, but in possession of powers, like Gem from RPM.
    - The monster making method, which involves using completely random items like forks and drills, is something that has repeatedly been used in many Power Ranger seasons.
So, as you can see, it's more than just roll calls and terminology. I know those points can still end up in the cutting room, and some of the plot points aren't that specific to Power Rangers, but you can't deny the heavy influence Power Rangers has on Go-Busters.
I think the reason why Go-Busters didn't get adapted initially was because its lack of gimmick collectibles. Samurai had the discs, Megaforce has the cards and keys, Dino Charge has the batteries, and Ninja Steel has the ninja stars. In comparison, Go-Busters is very barebones. That, and poor toy sales in Japan.
Also, the main general (who sticks around until the end of the season) is played live, and he has a lot of screentime, sometimes even in the same frame as the rangers. Reshooting scenes may be too expensive. Their morphing sequence also lacks any special flair, i.e. switching to CGI background and effect, and split screen for elaborate suiting up. Instead, they use the live footage as is with little CGI, which makes it hard to adapt wholly.
Thanks to the recent announcement though, looks like we'll be getting evil cyber Zordon after all.

Yusak William i just realized how it could be adapted into a sequal to rpm. Dr k tries to call the rpm rangers, but discovers the infected morpher and is forced to create new ones. The vilian is a back up plan created by venjix. Or better, when the rpm red ranger tries to morph, venjix takes over his mind. Again causing dr k to build the go-buster morphers.
