That is one cool device, hope to hear your thoughts after using it for a while! No surprise this is my initial comment: I really appreciate Lenovo reinstating some ThinkPad DNA into the keyboard this time around. IMO, the original X1 Fold keyboard from 2021 just didn't really feel like ThinkPad product. I wonder if we'll eventually be able to purchase the keyboard separately like the original Fold keyboard?

Great review and love the genuine enthusiasm you have for the product. Very happy to see this final being released. A tad bit disappointed the pen takes a battery, but a small price to pay :)
It also nice to see someone spending time on the actual device itself, instead of focusing most of one's review on how great the sustainable cardboard box is (like in so many initial reviews).

Looks nice and it's probably handy in many situations with that design. If they manage to promote this formfactor to a wider audience, it can definitely sell itself like the foldable phones that have finally caught the eyes of many.
If they fail to hype up new designs, these machines will always be a rare accessory rather than a new line of laptops.
It will never be the machine for everyone, but I appreciate the experimentation with this and the YogaBook 9i to see what works and for who.
Interestingly, the actual "machine body" these days could probably be made with a bamboo composite material and/or a nanocellulose material which is hopefully becoming more common both in terms of strength and biodegrading etc.
That would be an interesting idea. The challenge would be to get it to biodegrade when you want it to and not before. 😂
Very nice video as usual! Have fun with it, IMO foldable are the future of phones and computer, if done right...
Just a curiosity, maybe an idea for a future video: why do you use mostly windows machine? There's something that bother you about MacBook?
Regarding Macs, I used to use them but then there were lots of hardware issues and I can't fix my own MacBook anymore. That's the short version.

how strongly attached is the keyboard when you place it on one half of the screen?
Also when you packed the machine together, does it all stick together with magnets or is the folded screen and keyboard 2 loose items. Be interesting to see how accessible the screws are for disassembly
The keyboard never shifted or detached accidentally. It does stick together with magnets yes. A hardware maintenance manual was not available when I had it but several screws were visible.

This is going to be an odd compatibility question, but it's worth a shot: Would a system like this be compatible with the Lenovo ThinkVision M14t? Specifically, could you use the included pen across the folding display AND the LCD of the portable monitor?
I ask because I have 2 of them I like a lot, and being able to setup those two with a vertical X1 Fold like a tri-fold posterboard would be the bomb! Also worth adding: the Thunderbolt 4 would be amazing to use with a portable workstation like the P360 Ultra to have a high power desktop workstation that you can toss in a duffel bag.
I didn't have a touch display to try at the time. I have heard but never confirmed since I do not own one that a touch external monitor can sometimes do weird things if the host device already has a touch display. What I will say is having a full 16" 4:3 unfolded display didn't leave me wanting another monitor very often.
I am really fascinated by this laptop, but Lenovo announced it more than a year ago and it has not been released yet. Will it be released anytime soon? Also, will the processor be updated and how was its performance for you?
It was released the same day as this video. The processor for this generation is still 12. Performance was perfectly acceptable for the tasks I made it do. Stay tuned for more videos in this series.

This is a great question and I'm trying to remember if I used it in that specific configuration. I'll ask around.

Very cool, but I'm confused - this video was recorded in 2022 but is being published now? Was there a requirement to wait until the X1 Fold 16" was being actually sold? As I think it just started to around the time you published this.
I had one of the pre-production units for testing and I provided feedback on my experiences. All the video content I'll be releasing spans a time from Dec 2022 to approximately April 2023. Since Lenovo was contuining to work on it and it wasn't for sale, my content was not released. Until now! Muahahaha.

Wonder how that foldable screen will hold-up after 5 years of use? Will it be collectable in 15 years?
Yes, long term durability is going to be important when evaluating the viability of the form factor.
Is it true that this is fanless? How is the battery life and thermal doing?
No concerns were noted related to battery life or heat when I was testing. I had the dual battery setup.
Any reason it got delayed until now? Like because Lenovo decided to forfeit their original launch date to refine the software & experience issues with the fold 16, changed into something different from the model everyone's receiving last year?
Can't wait to hear your opinion on this machine, I was wholeheartedly disappointed by Asus Zenbook Fold 17 I borrowed from a friend working in one of the suppliers, the lack of functionalities just means it's as good as a surface pro 9 would get. I look up to the fold 16 for its fingerprint sensor, 5G and the battery life, hopefully it won't disappoint!

i read on the specs on the website, the ram, ssd and battery slot are upgradable except the cpu.. the high end cpu seems behind compared to the 7840u apu... probably due to the cpu availability or battery life longevity... other than that its a great tablet with a certain high price tag...

I thought Lenovo gave up on this model since it was supposed to be released over a year ago.
Anyways;
1. Does the screen get a lot of fingerprints on it?
2. I assume you are not going to dis-assemble it to see the inside?
3. Can you still access the BIOS using the F1 key?

Fingerprints are very manageable.
Didn't disassemble it since it was a prototype and didn't want to bust anything. Didn't have a HMM at the time.
BIOS is through the F1 key I believe as well as a means tablet only. Can't exactly remember.
by the time it is actually released we'll have folding laptops from every major brand
a few brands are already shipping them! Asus 17 Fold is out to rave reviews. LG's Gram Fold is also nearly out

Skipping it. No buttons for the left right and center mouse.on the keyboard. What's the point to a Thinkpad!
I hear your concern but Sensel did some cool stuff with the trackpad to help address it. Keep an eye out for future videos, I unpack it more there.
you should review the t480s and the t470 and compare them
If they ever show up at the same time. The 480 will almost certainly win in my book.

The 480 also had two, unless you meant the T480s, but I'd still take the newer quad core CPUs.
I dont get why it needs to be so thick. My Galaxy Z Fold 5 is ultra thin compared to this, and folds just fine with stylus support. Actually, the original Lenovo Yoga Book was about as thin as a Z Fold 5. That would be the ideal form factor for a new folding laptop rather than something as thick and large as this.
My guess would be the need from it stems from the durability testing requirements for ThinkPad don't apply to the other products. I've seen the Yoga Book at TechWorld and it was impressive but I got the sense which was the more durable device. More protection is probably needed for a folding screen that size vs a smaller one or two separate displays.
This would be a lot more interesting if it were running Ryzen. The battery life and integrated graphics performance is going to be awful comparatively because it's running Intel.
Maybe one day we will find out if they release an AMD version.

Product looks pretty half baked. The tablet stand in particular looks flimsy - as if it was a design afterthought.
Not sure about the tape but the inner box is biodegradable. The stand is perfectly functional.
Wow that keyboard is disappointing, no mouse left, middle, right buttons. Less functional compared to other Thinkpads in your lap.
Visually I can understand it will look as though it is lacking but the efforts Sensel made through their technology is hard to showcase without actually touching the device. I have more to share on that later.
No dedicated mouse buttons - no thinkpad. Again Lenovo tries to sneak this bullshit in. And yes, here is enough space for them.
Not as simple as you might think. The Sensel trackpad does a decent job of emulating the click. This isn't the clunkpad. Stay tuned for more on that.

I hadn't even noticed that! Yeah that's a deal breaker for using the trackpoint
Unfortunately it is one of those "you would need to try in person" to feel what its like. There are small bumps that tell you where the middle mouse button is and then left and right click are on either side. The haptic/force experience is controlled by software and feels different clicking the space where the TrackPoint buttons are versus the rest of the trackpad.
@@LaptopRetrospective thanks for the explanation but iirc we had this also with the W540 Touchpad and it left me to abandon the trackpoint and used a mouse until I got a P52. To be fair it was the clunky style and that was probably a whole different level of horrible usability but beside the force you needed to press down the other major gripe I had was that I could not feel the buttons. And software controlled means nothing to me, I use Linux .... But waiting for your full review.
