there may be a couple people here that need to hear this: if you have an old lenovo and want to refurbish it, lenovo has excellent consumer-facing documentation for their computers. additionally, even if they don't sell the part themselves anymore, their parts catalogue is *also* consumer-facing, which is very useful in finding parts numbers
if you have an old laptop and you don't know what to replace?
1, the battery. 2, replace that silly old spinning disk hard drive with an SSD. still crashing? run a memory test. (memtest). got errors in memtest?
3, replace the ram, run memtest again.
still crashing? bad CPU. most of the time they're not replaceable, unlike this model laptop.
    >90% of the time that's all that's needed. everything else is just extra. I've repaired >2000 computers, it's not as hard as it may seem.
good luck and try not to strip any screws

ofc there's a lot more to it, I just see comments about people giving up and it's a bummer.
don't overcomplicate things. read the docs. replace that ding dang HDD

I think theres alot of contenders for best and most durabile laptop ever made in that era Heck even the netbooks of that era of computers had more upgradablity than modern day laptops
      Rant time
I bought an acer laptop for £12 ( can not remember the model for life of me) and pretty much everything on that machine was upgradeable. CPU,RAM,SSD,Disk drive, Laptop was dead sadly tried everything Reseating ram swapping cpus trying externel montior Doing a rain dance covering the laptop in holy water. Shame really. Its surprising how far we've come when it comes to laptops we've went from being able to upgrade the CPUS and GPUS in laptops to producing glorififed e-waste in not even a decade

Tried refurbishing a t410, did not take anything. Ubuntu, Kali (old from 2019, new), our PXE server, Debian 11, Deb 12, Rocky Linux 8, Clonezilla, Athena OS, etc... on this thing. I re-set the RAM and Hard Drive, turned on and off most options in BIOS, you name it, I did more of it. Same results no matter what. I did get a Kali 2019 Live instance to work, but it was slow... install quit like the others 1/3 of the way through. So, ended up thinking it was hardware related. Wish I saw this video before dumping it, refurbish the screen or something with raspi idk. Great video, looking forward to more.

Ah, the good old day of Thinkpads. Where the screen bezel was not a damn sticker. I blame Apple for the woes of current machines. Thin, thin, thin above all. Then Intel for reducing the spec size for Ultrabook size.

If you were having trouble getting the drive wipe program to boot from USB, why didn'y you just burn a CD? The image fits nicely on CD and you have an optical drive.

I saw a whole lotta time -wasted- spent on replacing mildly corroded case screws but I musta missed the part where you replaced the _17 year old_ thermal paste... 🤔

I use one as a retro gameing computer. I updated the ram hard drive and battery. Reinstalled windows Vista business and it runs like a new machine.
