Just an advice , if you run it on low settings overnight, please turn it to the highest for 10 mins prior shut off, so you will burn all soot building up on low combustion lvl. It will prolong your maintenance cleaning intervals.

I just ordered mine, can’t wait to use it.
I bought one like that and enclosed the bottom leaving access on both sides using hinged doors. I used copper 90 degree fittings out the bottom to the sides where I can hook up the exhaust (which is insulated and exits on the fuel tank side ) and the combustion air ( which exits out the same end as the inlet air) , this gives me a place to store the exhaust pipe and combustion air tube plus the electrical wires to power it

I'm thinking of buying one of these myself. For my van
I have that unit. It Draws 7.7 amps for a minute at start and at shut down. It draws .27-.5 amps runnung on low and 2 amps at 3.3 P rate. Nothing as AWESOME as an Oil furnace blowing on you while watching it snow. I wouldnt run it a full blast to clean it. Mine I run at 3.3 puls max. I set the controller max at 3.3P and 4000 rpm. These run wild at 5.5P and 5500 RPM. I was scupitical when I bought mine. I dissassembled mine all the way down and put it back together twice. I ran mine on Lamp oil at first. Dollar General had some for $6 2 liters. If you need to get some fuel in a pinch this is a good option. I add a pinch of 2 cycle oil . Cool Video man, LET IT SNOW...
_Fuel is .02 x 1.9 x 60x60 will give you the fuel consumption, and the 1.9 is just assuming that what your low setting is. Use of battery is about 8 to 10 Amps for the start-up, once the glow plug is hot, in about five minutes, the Amps drops down to 1/2 to 3/4 Amp for running it, then once you shut it down it jumps back to 8 to 10 Amps to heat the glow plug to burn off excess fuel. 15 liters I can get about 7days before refueling._

Yeah I've used a buddy heater in regular ground tents and never really liked it. Never liked the idea of a open flame in a small tent.

Well done. Very informative. I have a 16 ft Scamp RV (installed a Dickinson propane heater) a wall tent (wood stove), an old Winnebago (wood stove). and even older home'-made travel trailer (a pot bellied stove),a 1972 Starcraft pop-up that I'm converting to a foldable hard-side pop-up (with an old propane heater that may or may not work) and I have the back of my Toyota Tacoma fitted with a cot that I heat with a Buddy Heater when I need heat (and there have been times when I've needed heat!). I'm thinking this setup might work for my pick-up (for when I'm traveling). My bugaboo is electrical energy as I usually don't have access to shore power. I charge the Scamp battery with a solar panel (a suitcase style Renogy 100W) but the suitcase is fairly heavy (I think about 60 lbs(?). Can you charge your portable battery when you're traveling (off you engine's alternator)?
Thank you! Sounds like you got a fleet of adventure vehicles 👍. As far as charging the portable battery, i haven't had the need to recharge it since most of my adventures are 1-2 days. But I'm gonna test out some methods to charge it maybe through the cigarette lighter plug. Thanks for watching!
@@vmoregon the best route in my opinion if you do, is to use a diode switch and a double battery deep see switch. When you want to double charge you would select the diode, but when not camping you switch back to the regular battery, since the diodes under charge your batteries, but it's only an issue for full timers IMO. The upgrade is about $150ish
Very cool set up! RTT's intrigue me and this is the first time I am seeing a heating system for one. Personally, I use an Alaknak 12x12 and three dog stove for heat during cold weather camping. I too use a separate battery box which houses a 20Ah LiFePO4 in a plastic 50cal style box. Looking to upgrade to a 60-80Ah to contend with cloudy and rainy days where I do not get any solar. +1 sub from me!
Thank you thank you. I have that kind of tent also. We usually use it when all of my brothers get together. The roof top tent works great for me and now with the heater im good year round. And yeah thats why i went with 100amh since it will last me the 2-3days i need without recharging. Thanks for the sub!

Not sure if you did anything with the "clicking" but I have a similar setup, RTT, and a CDH, I took the bolt out of the fuel pump and wrapped foam around the pump and attached it will zip ties. Barely hear it right next to the heater. Takes like 2 minutes and works great. Live my heater, been camping 2-3 days every week here in NE Iowa down to 16 degrees.
The clicking doesnt bother me, i drive a semi in a team so noises dont bother me much. But yes these heaters make life awesome in the winter.
@@vmoregon no worries, simple to do, I have my RTT on a trailer and the heater sits on the frame is it was resonating for a couple weeks until one day I added the foam and zip ties, hilarious thing is I could tell it was running when I heard the clicking, now I can't hear anything lol. I've caught myself putting my hand over the vent a ton of times to make sure, like it wouldn't be 40 degrees colder if it wasn't on lol. Sure is a game changer for winter camping. No more need to be buried in a sleeping bag haha. Thanks for a great video!
Looking into one of these heaters as an alt to propane for my 21` 5th wheel. It would have to be in a covered box outside, otherwise I know that clicking noise would keep me awake, like a ticking friggin clock. I think having the tank enclosed in the unit would help keep the fuel from gelling. But if your camper is on a permanent set up filling that small tank would get old.
Apparently a tank full will last around three nights

Air intake hose should take air from tent, then heat it, and then have the output hose go back to tent.
It definitely does keep drawing power after the initial large wattage start.

The heater still draws power for the fan. The faster you run your heater the more power it will draw for the fans.
Nice setup, I’m building an overland trailer now and going to mount the heater inside a vented tool box on top next to the tent, what amp hour batt do you have in your batt box?

No it did not. That was the first thing i did on it was extend the wires on the controller. I did not want to deal with the wireless remote.

Hi. Thanks for the video. Are you not using an air INLET pipe? I have the similar heater and trying to distance exhaust pipe and air inlet pipe as much as I can to avoid sucking exhaust smoke into the heater and into the hot air outlet pipe going to the tent.
Also, can you please provide a link/name of that long heated air pipe you are using. Original one is short BUT is has foil? insulation. In your case it must be large heat losses since the pipe is not insulated at all. I wonder if there is an insulated variant of the pipe you are using.
In this case i did not use the inlet hose since my conditions didn't warrant me worrying about exhaust being sucked up. but i do plan on using it to basically circulate the warm air. And in my case i don't see a point of having a insulated pipe since our winters don't get that cold here in oregon. I have a link for the 3in hose that i used in the description.
Do you have any experience with this heater in inclement weather like rain/snow? I cut up a tote to fit over mine but wasn't totally sure if it was necessary with the placement of the electronics
I haven't used mine in heavy rain only snow and i had no issues. It wouldn't hurt to cover it. I actually thought about doing the same with a tote.
Do you know by chance what was the temperature outside overnight? I am debating buying a 2kw or a 5kw, I would prefer not having running it to the lowest setting all night if possible, afraid of having to turn it off/on multiple times at night if the lowest setting is too hot.
Around 30° and it was perfect at low setting was not too hot at all.
What are deep cycle batteries? Do they replace your car battery?

It looks like the heater exhaust is 2 feet below the heater air intake and hot air rises.

Do you have the 5kw or the 8kw? In this video the link you provide to Amazon says 8kw but in a previous video you link to a 5kw. Just curious bc they are different sizes and require diff size hoses for ducting. I believe the 5kw is a 3in. Im currently trying to set one up so thanks for the vids.
Mine is 5kw. I put that link because the one i bought was out of stock so i found a similar one. As far as the outlet i belive they are the same on both. My buddy bought a 8kw to test out and it all looked the same.
Can I ask you what gauge of wire did you use to extend your controller an battery terminal.

Thank you. For the remote i just matched up the same wire gauge and extended it to what i needed.
Excellent video! Just to be clear; all you need for your battery setup is the battery and the box mentioned in the links? (this sounds very redundant but I'm a little confused as to why folks would buy a portable power station which seems a lot more expensive with lower capacity than your setup). Do you have that battery wired up to your alternator or just take off from home with a full charge? Thanks again, I'm hoping to try this heater with my rooftop tent - I live in western Montana and looking to extend camping season.
Thanks. Yes I couldn't justify the price of those power stations and that's why I put this together. You just need a deep cycle battery. I recharge it at home and I also wired in a battery isolator switch to charge it from the alternator. Kickass products has a kit for that.

Does the 3-inch air duct you bought from Amazon fit the hot air outlet, or do you have a 2.5-inch hot air outlet and have to squeeze the larger 3-inch hose down on it?
I believe its 3 to 3 so it just barely fits.

How would you address the diesel fuel gelling up? Would it be safe to put an additive into the that motor?
Yea i dont see why it would be an issue.
You can buy a different fuel pump for it there's a video on UA-cam about it.

Hey man! Did you have any worry about melting the tent material with the hose directly touching the tent or was the heat loss enough to not worry? Did you like have to wrap the hose in different material to avoid melting if applicable?
Nope it doesn't get hot enough.

I saw gave a link to someone of a in stock heater that yours was out of stock at time, it seems same link as the one from other video. Do you have the original brand link? I noticed that link below to a subscriber in stock on, the out lets is 4 holes. How did you get it down to one or connect flex hose?
Mine came with one outlet. I believe it can be switched out for a 1 outlet they sell all these parts. I looked in my past order and it tell me out of stock and wont give me a link.
@@vmoregon Perfect Thanks, I thought yours looks like one outlet, compared to most on Amazon have that 4 hole outlet. By they way do you know how many amps it draws on startup and once maintain average, or ballpark guess. I do have Jackery 1000 maybe connect to that, but I run my fridge off that and only has one DC Car outlet, not sure if can do splitter for heater and fridge run off, or do a battery pack like you have done.

Would you say that this heater is waterproof? or should I always have it covered?
Definitely not water proof. But having it under cover is good for sure. I usually set it right under my tent and it gives enough cover.
Do you smell any fumes from the heater in the tent? Ive used a mr buddy before and it smelled really bad. Seeing is diesel heaters is worth the switch.

It did and i threw it away and just extended the wires.

How long is the cord for the thermostat?
It came with a short one and i extended it by about 10ish feet so i can control from inside the tent.

When you have a good night's sleep everything is better. I think that voice would get old, otherwise the unit seems really good. Very economical too.
Oh yeah makes it a lot easier to get going on a cold morning.

Zero smell.
Does this duct hose give off a burning rubber smell? I have an Amazon duct hose and it stinks.
Never noticed any smells.

Just fyi I’m pretty sure that second hose you talk about it the air intake. You don’t want to run a hose from that to your tent.

Mine came with that one.
Them diesel heaters work best when you place them inside the area your heating run the exhaust outside doing that you WILL NOTICE a substantial increase in heat output. Hope this helps
Works great for me with this setup. But yes i agree it would benefit having it inside the area you are heating. I only need it to break that chill in the tent. Thanks for the advice!
