Excellent reaction, Angela! Rush did make the song to be a tribute to radio and the switch in styles throughout the song was meant to be like switching the radio dial to different stations, you nailed it!
This is a Canadian rock anthem. Alex Lifeson was the band's guitarist he killed it. These dudes were so damn talented and truly a unique sound in rock music at that time. Pure artistry. They make me feel so proud to be Canadian. RIP Neil Peart.
That was Rush's greatness--They could take a song about anything and create a sound journey/opera in a progressive rock way. Whether about the creation of the atomic bomb , a Salem witch hunt, What it takes for the athlete to become champion, Or odds and fate..thier lyrics were just as great as thier music.
Alex Lifeson on guitar. Geddy Lee on vocals and bass guitar, the amazing Neil Peart on drums, rest in peace buddy. What's ironic is that that thumb nail is actually the album cover of their very first album, years before Spirit of Radio, which is more of a blue-collar hard rock album but a really good one for that idiom. But it was before they picked up Neil Peart on the drums, who not only opened up new musical Horizons for them, but wrote most of the lyrics from there on out.
One of the few reactions I’ve seen that was able to pick out the piano coming in at the end and the way that changes and emphasizes the vibe. Never thought of rockabilly but that’s a perfect description for it. Cheers and Rush on sister!
'Permanent Waves', the album this is from, is great front to back. This song was always fantastic live. But then, about everything they did live was fantastic, lol.
The animated video version is fun. I'm sure that you would love it. Neil Peart. Admired for his talent, respected for his intellect, loved for his humanity. RIP PROFESSOR.
"The Spirit of Radio" was the lead single from Rush's 1980 studio album Permanent Waves. The first time I heard the song was over the radio on the boom box I used to carry around when I was thirteen. I was goofing off in the yard with the neighbor girl. It was something of a departure from the music on their previous album, where the songs took up entire record sides. This was actually a song, almost a pop song, right down to the staccato piano octaves in the final passages. At the time it seemed this song was how Rush explained the changes in their sound to their fans -- "All this machinery making modern music \ Can still be open-hearted \ Not so coldly charted \ It's really just a question of your honesty \ Yeah, your honesty" -- It echoes an earlier song of theirs, "Closer to the Heart", from 1977.
Spirit of Radio was my alarm clock song 'back in the day'. From personal experience, I am certain Rush changed the course of world history. Their album Grace Under Pressure changed me and others involved in an intense geopolitical endeavor, defeating the Soviets. You may not believe this. ok, but, I was an avionics tech in the US Navy assigned to Virginia's Top Gun squadron. (There were 3 "Top Gun" squadrons, Virginia, Florida and California. And yes, Tom Cruise came to train and film with us but the movie was set in California.) We literally were training and fighting the Soviet Union in theaters people don't know about, nukes were on the table. The odd thing was, we were cavalier and thrilled to win or die at every step. Rush had a big hand in waking us up to the reality of the consequences of our war, if it escalated. I believe our change in attitude resulted in the détente with the Soviets under Reagan people don't comprehend. Our very real willingness to wipe everyone out changed. (This comment is dedicated to Alex. I still miss you my friend)
I own every single RUSH studio CD and have seen them many times in concert in the past, and I can honestly say that this is absolutely their BEST song! I can hear it a million times and never get sick of it. Thanks for the fun reaction! Hope you do more RUSH reactions!✌
Seeing Rush live is theatre, performed to the highest possible standard. The musicianship of this trio and the amount of sound they produce is mind boggling. The drummer Neil Peart RIP is widely considered, along with Led Zeppellins John Bonham, the goat among Rock drummers, his kit was about as big as you could possibly fit on a concert stage and he used it all. Oh ya and he Wrote the Lyrics. The lead singer Geddie Lee is one of the Top Rock Bassists of all time he also plays synth pedals with his feet and keyboards, often Singing Playing Bass and the Synth simultaneously. The lead guitarist Alex Lifeson plays every style of guitar sings backup vocals and plays peddles and keyboards and cowrites the music with Geddie Lee. Lifeson gets somewhat overshadowed by the other two because they're so good but his guitar sound is distinct to Rush and his haunting melodic chaotic solos are some of the most iconic in Rock music. The three are nicknamed the holy trinity, looked up to by lesser bands and have an almost cultlike following that rivals the Grateful Deads. Glad you reacted to this and hope to see a lot more Rush on your channel they're a rabbit hole well worth going down. 😊
Think of an old school car radio. The ones with the tuning and volume knobs. And as you're turning the tuning knobs, you hear all different genres. That would be this song.
If you want to see more of that guitar fingering (the guitarist's name is Alex Lifeson), this is their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. "The Spirit of Radio" starts at 28:08. ua-cam.com/video/1J9MQhwUpSk/v-deo.html
I always recommend having the lyrics to Rush songs available unless you like watching new movies on an old black and white TV? :D You are missing on on half the greatness. :D
dial changes on radio you nailed it! Deceptively difficult music to play like all Rush's catalogue they make prog rock approachable and more importantly very likeable as a music genre which was much maligned in late 70's and 80's
Hi, here’s some friendly advice: When you react to bands like Rush or other Rock bands, it’s always better to do the live performances! Here’s a link to Spirit of Radio LIVE. This version would’ve made your reaction a lot more interesting to watch. ua-cam.com/video/FFpZFnJ6ZT8/v-deo.html
3 guys make ALOT of MUSIC!!🔥🎶♥️
Excellent reaction, Angela! Rush did make the song to be a tribute to radio and the switch in styles throughout the song was meant to be like switching the radio dial to different stations, you nailed it!
Iconic 🇨🇦 Canadian band!!! In my humble opinion, these three gentlemen were brilliant together. You gotta watch their live performances!
Cheers!!!
One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity!
This is a Canadian rock anthem. Alex Lifeson was the band's guitarist he killed it. These dudes were so damn talented and truly a unique sound in rock music at that time. Pure artistry. They make me feel so proud to be Canadian. RIP Neil Peart.
Best drummer of all time
My absolute favorite Rush Song!!! 🎶🔥💖

great reaction. Nailed it on your first listen. Thanks for getting to some Rush on the channel
The world's smallest orchestra...three guys making that much sound. And they could do that live! RIP Professor.

Such a great song. Thanks for reacting Angela!

A gril friend of mine used to listen to this song for her morning workout - Quite a feat considering the change in speed and measure.

This is one of my favorite songs by this incredible 3 piece band.
This was probably the first Rush song that I heard, on the radio, of course. I was gobsmacked, and immediately had to buy the album.
It's hard to believe all this sound comes from a 3 man group! They're absolutely the best!
🤗 Subbed for Rush! 🥰 Your Channel looks cool! 🤭 I see lots of my 80's Band friends! Love sharing reactions of my friends with them! ☺🐰

RUSH rocks and Alex Lifeson's guitar playing is so underrated.

I love Rush because they meant so much to the people I've loved in my life.
Toronto 1980, radio station CFNY. Not sounding like anything before. Played stuff from U.k.
Happy you enjoyed the song!
I was a sophomore in hs. This brings back memories

You gotta do YYZ live in Rio. You'll be blown away by every aspect of the show, including the love affair between the fans and the group.

Check out 'Rich Kids' by the band Rich Kids. The riff is the same!
Their musicality was amazing. 🤘 I was fortunate to see them in the 80's.
