The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus (4K HD Trailer) | ABKCO Films

- Filmed before a live audience in London, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was originally conceived as a BBC-TV special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who had worked on videos for both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, it centers on the original line up of the Rolling Stones - Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon)- who serves as both the show's hosts and featured attraction. For the first time in front of an audience, "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" performs six Stones classics ("Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Parachute Woman," "No Expectations," "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Salt of The Earth.")
The program also includes extraordinary performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono as well as The Dirty Mac a 'supergroup' before the term had even been coined, the band was comprised of Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums) and John Lennon on guitar and vocals. This performance marks the first musical context in which John Lennon performed before an audience outside the Beatles. A mirthful conversation between Jagger and Lennon captures these two at a pivotal creative point in time. The Circus is the only time Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) performed with Jethro Tull and the last time Brian Jones would perform with The Rolling Stones in front of an audience.
As David Dalton, who covered the event for Rolling Stone, so aptly put it, "...for a brief moment it seemed that rock 'n' roll would inherit the earth."

One of the greatest musical events, ever!
I absolutely love the way this is filmed!! The colors are so rich.
Colors are definitely look more vibrant when they are shot on film, especially when compared to modern digital cameras.
@@toad6565 Well I am comparing them to movies on film from that time period. There is sometimes a washed out look to period films. This one of the best-looking films I've ever seen.
@Francis Joseph Are you in that industry or did you attend film school? Just curious since you know so much about the particulars. Very interesting but I am not sure it is the case regarding my comment. See, I am referring specfically to movies from the early 1970s, which seem to reflect more of the cinematography style of that era. For instance, there are periods where films were shot in Technicolor and they had almost a gaudy appearance due to the overly bright colors. But many films were still shot in black and white in that era (thinking of the 1950s and early '60s) and that lent a certain dramatic quality to the films. Hitchcock used B & W artistically and in conjunction with color in those decades. Antonioni came out with a vibrant, "mod" film "Blowout" around 1966 and even "Zabriskie's Point" was not washed out (I believe it came out in 1969 or 1970. I feel that the washed out quality was also due to film budget ultimately.

This wasn`t released because it was consithered to not be good enough. Today it would be a masterpiece. If that doesn`t tell you anything i give up.
It wasn't released, because Mick thought that The Who may have upstaged his band. Fortunately, he had a change of heart, and let it out. But, many years later.

This show is such a mind trip of amazing talent. You got the stones with brian Jones famously on his last legs (he was fired shortly after this), you got taj mahal killing it, Marianne faithful looking beautiful and singing a great old folk song, and jethro tull with Tony Iommi from black sabbath on guitar crushing it to kick off the whole show.
Then you have The Who completely steal the entire show with a raging performance of ‘a quick one, while he’s away’. It was so good, this concert wasn’t released for 30 years cause the stones were embarrassed they didn’t match up with The Who’s performance.
And to top it off you have the Dirty Mac performing the Beatles’ classic ‘yer blues’. The dirty Mac never played together again and the band was: John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix experience on drums.
Oh and yoko does some screeching for some reason.
It's almost as if, in order to get Lennon to appear, they had to allow his crazy wife to do her howling, lmao
Jagger turned down newcomers Led Zeppelin for this. Idiot. Unless he knew they'd out perform everyone.
And now, your hosts for this evening...

How about finally releasing a 'best of' the Stones 60s TV and promos before all us first generation Stones fans are dead?
lol hahah thats right you guys are pushing the age limits there. All that archived content better be released soon!
I imagine the Abkco situation would have to be sorted out first, The Stones have no control of their pre Sticky Fingers catalogue.
Im second generation ,erm im nearly pulling me pension,so we second @Martin Thomas's request!
@@bingsinatra5283 interesting. sad as well.
@@BrianCarnevaleB26 Yeah, it is sad... I thought it had been sorted when the 40 Licks compilation was released, but no... even in death Allen Klein maintains his vice-like grip on The Stones' Decca/London catalogue.
@0:49 is one of the greatest and most underrated guitarists -- Jesse Ed Davis!
One of Jesse Ed's most famous songs is the guitar solo from Doctor My Eyes. I love that solo! It fits so well with the song and it was all Jesse Ed Davis!
Bill Wyman (in his book) claims that he was supposed to play bass in The Dirty Mac but Richards pushed him out of the way and said something to the effect that if anyone's gonna be on stage with Lennon and Clapton, it's gonna be Richards, not Wyman.
Wyman got railroaded alot, had his bass-lines rerecorded by Keith, waited for hours for smacked-out Keith to show up to sessions. He said he should have retired much earlier.
Keith and Lennon had a little rivalry, doubt they would want to play together.

I love how the crisp quality makes it look like 2020 👌
I had the dvd and you should watch this just for the Who alone. They completely stole the show that night.
That's why it wasn't released back in the 60s. The Stones (Mick & Keef primarily) were embarrassed with their performance compared to The Who.
@@brianinglis3805 Keith Moon shined brighter than any other star in that concert,
@@brianinglis3805 In your head, the Stones were and still are the only magicals ones.
It's generally known the Who blew the Stones off that day, the Stones hadn't played live for ages, where as the Who were on the road a lot. Jagger was aware of this and didn't think the Stones performance stood up, hence it wasn't released for ages.

it's a shame this was shelved for decades, it had the Stones, Lennon, the Who, and Clapton; the only thing missing was The Kinks
It was shelved because the Who out shone the stones
@@tanseygreen possibly, and Lennon's band sounded better too (easy feat with Clapton on guitar); anyway, this performance convinced Jagger that the Stones were just not good enough for late '60s touring (enter Mick Taylor some months later); I like to think that R&R Circus was the swan song of the British Invasion (the Stones became a whole different beast, the Who became a hard-rock band, the Beatles split up and the Kinks started their decline)
