      Really? Despite his fame, i don't get the hype. He was always over-prepared and dull. There are countless comedians today funnier than Hope, and if you're stuck with only thinking the old dead guys were funny, i've got a long list that would bury Hope...Jack Benny, Jonathan Winters, Woody Allen, Dean Martin, Redd Foxx, Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Johnny himself, and countless more.

    Carson didn’t despise Bob Hope. And although it was discussed beforehand what he would talk about, it was not scripted. Hope didn’t read off cue cards like he did on his own specials. Barnie McNulty was Hope’s cue card man. He wasn’t in the Tonight Show Burbank studio. I know because I worked at NBC at the time.

      How come Conan and Letterman spent ten minutes on Conan's podcast this week talking about how much Johnny Carson disliked Bob Hope?

    • @Norvo82
      @Norvo82 3 роки тому +2

      @@victorkong82 In the 60s and 70s, Hope was a fine guest to have on the Tonight Show. Yes, he acted like he owned the place, but he could still do the job: the man was quick with a joke and fairly amusing. But through the 80s and into the 90s, as his sight and hearing began to fail him, his talkshow appearances became a painful chore.
      A Bob Hope interview had to be pretty much scripted in advance, because Hope would only respond to what he thought he was asked. Deviation could lead to disaster and the last thing you want is to embarrass an icon like Hope. In fact, the way they had to work to make Hope look good convinced Carson he didn't want to overstay his welcome in the business.

      @pete smyth also, Carson HATED it when Hope had all his jokes scripted and would read them, Carson thought that was below his show and told DeCorvoda but Hope ran the steaks at NBC, and the steak-sauce. You can watch Hope (most episodes on Carson appearances) reading or cuing up his jokes just right in a line....and if Johnny interrupted or the show took a different turn, Carson would hear about it the next day (OR THAT NIGHT) that Hope was pissed....and Fred and Johnny would talk it over in closed door meetings and people could hear the shouting through the door.

    Just an ugly rumor that Carson didn't like Hope. Some author wrote it in a book to sell books. The interviews with Hope were no more scripted than with any other guest. Carson had prepared questions and notes for most guests and with Hope they actually winged it more often than not.

    • @eduardo_corrochio

      Johnny may have not hated Bob but it's been said that before a Tonight Show appearance, Hope's people would send Carson several specific questions to ask Bob, and they had written the answers that Hope would say during the interview. Carson was not to stray far from the list. Overall as entertainers Johnny was good on the fly; Hope was so-so-- he needed his material written ahead of time.

      @ Tom Kelley. I agree that Bob Hope as the old expression goes, "stayed at the dance too long", but he did not support the Vietnam War. He supported the U.S. troops in Vietnam by entertaining them. And they needed entertainment to take their minds off, if only for an hour or two, that horrible war! He also entertained the U.S. troops during the Korean War and during WW2.
