Great video. Luckily, my wife was familiar with hearing some prog songs on the radio in the 70's. She was the type of person that didn't really know the artists names of songs. So thru me playing some music we both found out together she liked some prog bands such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Rush and the gateway bands like Styx, Queen and Kansas. While we were dating, I made hear two mixed CDs of Yes and Genesis. Sort of a "best of" compilations of each band. One I wrote Yes Camp and Genesis Camp on the other. Great video, Scott. First of all, my wife is a huge GBV fan and I totally get Bob and the gang being a good gateway into prog. I would include Circus Devils in there as well. I would say that my better half tolerates everything I play, but I also know to avoid certain things: Zappa, Genesis is a big one as well haha. She digs the Moodies, Yes-Fragile, early Tull, CARDIACS. Prefers 80s Rush to 70's, etc. Oh yeah and Magma is fine too! Saw Crimson with me at the Ryman, on her birthday and loved It. I don't get the feeling she likes Japan as much as me though, haha. Her favorite music is Bob, Coltrane, Bowie, Eno, Sabbath, Talking Heads, Roxy. Hopefully we bump into you guys at a GBV show/event some day.
I lucked out my beautiful wife whom I’ve been married to for 8 plus years, loves prog..old Genesis Yes even the fusion stuff I listen to like Return to Forever. Moreover she prefers deep cuts to hits which is even better. I’ve been a musician for about 35 of my 63 years I’m a bass player..sorry lol...but I did end up with pretty girl not the best friend lol. When we first started talking I was amazed at the stuff she liked...Yes shoot high aim low etc. Then she said she liked Fleetwood Mac I was like ok we’re done lol...then she said she loved bare trees album etc....wow..she meant the Peter Green Bob Welsh era Mac....true love. We got together in 2013 unfortunately after the band I was in had already opened for Kiss & Queensryche. But it’s been great.
Great video! I'd add a couple: - I think the first thing that we need to avoid (oh lord have I been guilty of this) is being snobby about her tastes. That is the path to failure. That's true with wives, friends, you name it. If you have a genuinely open mind to her taste, she'll reciprocate. - Don't TELL her how great prog is. Especially about how great the musicianship is or how amazing the writing is. Lead with how moving the music is. Listen to the music together and let her witness how the music impacts you! "And You And I" and "Firth of Fifth" are unambiguously beautiful pieces of music.
