  • Some factions are just easier to start with than others. In this video I rank them from easiest to hardest to learn. Let me know what your rankings are in the comments.

First game of Dune. 5 player, I'm House Atreides. Dealt family atomics and turn 3 buy Weather Control by careful manipulation of bidding.
Having deliberately left Arrakeen, "chasing spice", with most of my forces, leaving a deliberately weak defence.
Played both cards making the storm sweep through and destroy almost the entirety of Harkonnen, Guild and Emperor forces, and half of the fremen's.
    What a start to Dune!

That was very different form my experience as a first time player playing atreides lol. I floundered around, made an early aggressive play for the win, barely missed and spent the rest of the game trying to recuperate-and failing lol. Still a very cool game I'm down to play again, but I really wish I had played another faction to start

@@jakfrost2 I´ve just played one Dune game and some of my mates are just telling that some alliances are just broken and unstopable, what do you think?? In our case, the Fremen just had the luck to got double 10 money at the start of the game so you can imagine the thing. 2 questions: 1. When you control the weather, you only can move the storm as is "natural way of moving? 2. Theres only one movement per faction to move troops, isnt this an enormous limitation?

Those two cards and the Lasgun in the hands of Atreides allied with Bene Gesserit made me aware of how treacherous this game is on my first outing.

  • @artemisp2819
    @artemisp2819 2 роки тому +15

I agree except I would switch Bene and Atreides. Atreides, while having a lot of information to manage, at least have a clear and traditional path to victory. A brand new player will have next to no idea how to effectively play the Bene Gesserit, much less win with them (other than just lucking into a prediction victory). I think Bene Gesserit should absolutely always be played by the player at the table doing the teaching.

I tried doing an alliance with the Emperor while Playing Fremen. If you ask me how that goes, lets just say some rich faction paying the local horde to wreck havoc amongst the colonist while they stake their claims onto dune. Its a devastating combination

Yesterday we played our first game. And I was Bene Gesserit. I feel devastated because I wasn't sure what can I do. Then in round 4 the faction I chose (I chose Harkonnen) in the prediction section won the game with my help. It was awesome, but beyond that, I think BG's are really hard to play for the first or second time.

I like to give new players House Atreides when I teach them how to play... Their first game is a practice with all cards open (showing). It lets them understand the value of the cards and how to use their powers effectively. I find that the other players, with open cards, can explain what they are doing and why. After a few turns they get it...

We just did a three player dry run of Dune to get the mechanics of the game down before introducing it to our core group we had a blast with a 3 person game cant wait to get a larger group toghter. Your first video was super helpful. We will definitely show the rest of the group your video before we play our next 5-6 player game. I really hope you do more videos on how to play gale force nine games like star trek ascendency or both firefly games. All of gale force nine games are great at putting you in the universe of the game you are playing.

Just played my first game with all six factions (one three player faction, the others with two players each). The fremen and emperor alliance won which seems like a good strat from the other comments.
Playing as the BG and allied with the Atreides with the advanced rules, my team used a karama to seize a lasgun, knowing that almost every faction still held a shield. The Harkonnens were closest to a win at that time, and used their karama card to steal the lasgun. Since the Atreides had a shield too, they send one soldier to Arakeen against the Harkonnen. We used the voice to command they use the lasgun, and that’s how a lone Atreides soldier faced down an army with no survivors.

I though atreides is the easiest because they have nearly perfect information at any given time and they don’t have to remember it all, which means that a new player doesn’t have to struggle through learning new rules and exceptions to those rules in a complicated game while also trying to keep track of literally every card that has been dealt or used. Atreides is like playing with a free mentat when you’re new. They’re still my favorite faction because the limited prescience is amazing, especially when paired with the voice in an alliance with the bene gesserit, making the atreides extremely useful if you understand the game well enough that you can use all that free flowing information well.

    • @RTFM

In my opinion, Guild, Emperor and the most easy to play with, specially the first times. Harkonnen and Atreides are very good too and if Fremen gets resources i will put it with Hark and Atr. ¿But, what about BG? I have the impression that in the basic game is just to difficult to play with and it´s a support faction more than anything else¡

I was the only player in our group of 5 to have played the original Dune, so I agree to play as the Fremen. Despite to circumvent one of the hardest balances in the game, troop costs, the basic rules really don't pay off as much - at least not at my skill level. Harkonnen and the Emperor teamed up and used their near infinite resources to just take a coop victory, and we could rally to stop them. Still, a wonderful remastering of a wonderfully thematic game.

If you rank with difficulty it’s mostly accurate just bene gesserit should be last place and atreides 5th. Even if you rank with strenght bene gesserit should be last place again, this fraction mostly sucks, just 1 free revival, no money collecting mechanism, no money earning mechanism, no fighting abilities, it’s the most difficult to play good with.

I strongly disagree. I would say that by far the Fremen are the easiest, especially for beginners. Losing even major battles has little consequences as they recover and come back on Arrakis cheap and fast. I find them actually rather overpowered. Sharing their recovery rate also makes them extremely powerful allies. And they have the best leaders.
On the other side the Emperor is IMO very underpowered, and very hard to play. Sure they get money through bidding but this mostly happens at the beginning of the game. Once everyone is stuffed with cards, the flow of money slows down. One single defeat in a major battle makes it almost impossible to come back (low recovery rate, and flow of money has stopped), and the battles are not their strong point. It is also hard to find allies as the power that they share is very weak in comparison with that of the others, especially the Fremen and Atreides.
Personally, I would rank them, from hardest to easiest to play :
Emperor, Harkonnen, Bene Gesserit, Atreides, Guild, Fremen
I haven't played this awesome game extensively quite yet but so far these elements have been common to all my games. Happy to hear people challenging and explaining me where I get it wrong.
