  • Disclaimer: The video contains graphic live footage of an eagle killing a live baby hawklet & feeding it to its eaglets. Viewer discretion is advised.
    DNF (Decorah North Female) comes back to the nest and she zeros in on the baby hawklet while DN13 & DN14 come close expecting a feeding. This very young hawklet is so brave and is a fighter to even try and save itself from the most fierce apex raptor that is ready to kill it. After several minutes DNF stops & goes over to the other side of the nest and feeds her eaglets from an earlier delivery of pheasant while the baby hawklet is still alive and injured on its back. After feeding them, she lies down in the nest and one of the eaglets lays on the hawklet. She will get up and go over to the baby hawklet and pick it up - it struggles and continues to fight until the very end. She then will start to to feed it to her eaglets in a very tragic turn of events. Nature can be cruel to watch at times. RIP little brave hawklet warrior!

    if i sawit right, the baby hawklet was still alive when DNF started to feed it to the eaglets, it was still struggling, when she ripped off one of its legs. The poor baby got eaten alive, yikes. What a very hard life those birds have, at times it wrenches our hearts. RIP little brave warrior.

      Hi Silvana - I would like to think that the hawklet might have had a chance to survive it was older/larger and the eaglets smaller and younger - similar to the hawklet in Vancouver BC nest that fledged successfully (Spunky). But the fact that this week old eyas did its best to fight this strong eagle really shows it wanted to survive against all odds. A very brave warrior till the very end. I see more human dignity and strength in this little bird than in many humans in the world today. 😞💔 TC my friend I know this was very difficult to watch!

    So very sorry for the little Hawklet. I just can’t being myself to watch it but from reading what Lady Hawks had said, that little Hawklet sure put up a fight and God bless him even though he never had a chance. Yes, Nature can be very cruel but, I have learned from watch a lot of nature live cams that that is what they do to survive and maybe from time to time, also win the fight too. It’s very unfortunate and either not easy or it’s just too much to watch but, it happens a lot more then we know. God bless that baby and RIP sweet one. The female came to the nest and immediately killed it and fed to the eaglets much like DNF did here.

    I believe that the parent was intimidated by the hawklet, flew up to the branch and then let the older of the two eaglets pick at it until that eaglet could make any progress. The hawklet fought back. Then the parent flew to the nest and moved away, sitting in the middle of the nest. Finally the parent got up and destroyed the hawklet and fed it to the eaglets. Very interesting from the standpoint of nature, as sad as it is.

    How sad ((((
    However, I have a question.
    Do you think if this hawk chick in its age or size coincided with the eagles of this pair - it would have a much better chance of survival and growth?
    Many animals raise babies of a different kind, don't they?
    It is noticeable that both parents hesitated in their decision - is the eagle dad less attentive?

    • @ladyhawk
      @ladyhawk  3 роки тому +5

      Hello SB yes I do believe that the size of the eaglets and the size of the hawklet did have an impact on its survival outlook. Here DN13 & DN!4 are almost full size eagles and the hawklet was very young - about a week to 10 days old. It has really very little chance of survival as it could not stand up to the eaglets if prey came in and ask to be fed like Spunky the hawklet that did survive in the eagles nest in Vancouver BC. The main differences are the hawklet in Vancouver was almost of fledging age and was able to branch and hop all over the nest and get out of the way of the eaglets. Also the eagle parents did not target it as prey like the female eagle did here. I do think that Dad's instincts to brood were stronger than his instinct to kill and feed the hawklet as prey. The female DNF was slightly conflicted I think because of the cries of the hawklet, the shape of its beak may have confused her and its actions by sitting up in the nest like one of her eaglets. Ultimately though, her instincts that caused her to raid the hawk nest in the first place because they were prey did overcome any hesitancy she had about killing it.
