Pennsylvania Railroad P5 Electric Loco - Sole Survivor

  • Not many have had the chance to see a real PRR P5 now since the sole survivor in in St Louis - far away from most PRR fans. On 8-4-09, I had the chance to see the P5 since I was at National Association Of S Gaugers Convention. I had heard it was in awful shape, but it is not as bad as I expected. Still it does not seem like they are doing anything with it for a very long time since it is buried far back in 1 of their huge open air train sheds. It should be in the main PRR collection at the RRMPA in Strasburg.

    Oh please, is it went to RRMPA they would treat it the same way. They have the first GG1 ever built, sitting out side, rusting. While another generic one that just happens to be painted black is inside restored. Tell me how that makes sense.

    I've had SMR for as long as I can remember, and I don't remember seeing a P5... Perhaps you meant the GG1?
    yeah, I know I am late.

      It was the P5A you unlock, with the streamlined body.
      I'm even later.

    Great video! I just read about P5 #4700 in The Keystone and I'm very happy this important part of railroading history was preserved...and kept under cover. It's painful to see it in that weird green & without keystones though. I've got to get to St. Louis!

    This is one of my favorite locomotive of all time for the most part I love box cabs be nice to see this restored

      it uses a third rail so sadly it won't be. not to mention it's too heavy for the tracks.

      @@GiordanDiodato that was set up for third rail it wasn't an overhead guy cuz that did have the transformer in there for 11,000 volts if it was a Pennsylvania it would be an overhead I think from everyone I saw but thank you

    I am amazed there is one P-5 left out there. How the hell did it ever get that green crap all over it? It surely is doing no one any good where it is, like everyone else has offered it clearly belongs at Strasburg. While they may not have room for it inside the building, it could at least be painted black and the keystones put back on her again. Sad to think that she will never run again, but at least there's ONE left, like so many other great PRR locos. I remember the P-5's as a boy on the Low Grade and Columbia Pa. among many others. What was her number when she was in service if you know? Thanks for posting this it made my day, maybe we can find a PRR T-1 hiding out somewhere..... :D

      That green crap is what happens to Pennsylvania railroad DGLE
      ( Dark Green Locomotive Enamel ) when it fades after 50 years ,you'll see it on brigdes , painted keystone emblems , anything painted with that paint . Pennsy stripes are not decals either , 3 coats of red primer ,than 2 coats gold ( early days - 1930 - 1950 ) yellow ( 1953 - 1968 ) then they masked off that color for the 5 stripes ( cat whiskers ) or the single stripe ,than 3 coasts of DGLE , which that color was
      9 parts black and 1 part green ,the green was used to adhere to the gold which it didn't adhere to that well ,that's why they went with yellow over the primer ,yellow is a very hard color to remove and after time yellow fades to white , so a locomotive ,say a beat up alco F2 would look mint green with white stripes and lettering in 2010 . Pretty damn ugly from that shinny super dark green with gold stripes in 1950 .

    Dang it St. Louis first the only other DL&W and now a PRR do these guys ever quit on not letting good engines go to be restored at there home railroads. I know they will never budge in these engines still some what existence whist they still stand. It is sad.

    When you see these once great locomotives such as the P5 you have here, it's hard to imagine them on the main lines pulling freight or passenger trains. Especially given the condition they are in now.

    What I'm looking at is a disgrace. It is repulsive. It deserves better. If it is too heavy to move on the trucks, can't it be partially dismantled, moved to a museum, cleaned up, repainted and then reassembled? And yes, I did spy what appeared to be a GG1 behind it. What about that loco? These are historic pieces of railroad history. They are examples of the best in American transportation technology, design and construction. They stand in stark contrast to the toy-like electric locos being used by AMTRAK, and NJT today.

    whenever I see a video of a loco like this it makes me so happy that it's been saved. yes, it could be running, restored, hauling specials or just looking pretty. but the reality is it's still with us and you can go see it where it is. Unlike that milestone pioneering world's first mainline electric which B&O hauled out of retirement to show it at the transport celebrations, and then scrapped it! but really great to see P5a, s motors, t motors, DD1's fantastic they're still around and not hyped over like some UP kettles...

    Should have told that these were built from *1931 to 1935...* I can smell the ozone and hear the hum and buzz of the transformers, etc.

    You eventually unlocked these in Sid Meiers Railroads! Thanks for the vid, I had no idea that there was only one remaining example. In the game its interesting because its the only train based solely on electric.

    I had no idea there was a P-5 still in existence! I wonder if the PRR museum in Strasburg could acquire it. They would restore it.

      problem is this locomotive is too heavy for the current rails.
      which is a shame, since I wish she'd come back home to Pennsylvania. Even if it's to Altoona.
