Frank loves the rhythms of words and the final words of Dumb All Over are a prime example... Another would be "But then on the other hand I would" from Montana and probably his most repeated rhythm is "a sinister midget, with a bucket and a mop" from The Torture Never Stops where he repeats the phrase multiple times in live versions...

And there you have Frank...A huge variety of musical styles and genres all mashed up together into a tasty bouillabaisse of spicy goodness guaranteed to feed the senses; garnished with an acerbic lashing of sociopolitical commentary.
I believe that by this time Frank was through being subtle and just laid it out there.
"Do what you want to. Do what you will.
Just don't mess up your neighbors' thrill...
and when you pay the bill kindly leave a little tip...
and help the next poor sucker on his one way trip"
    Words to live by indeed.

These songs are out of their original order, Dumb All Over should have been second with The Meek finishing it up! And Dan is right, he hated the likes of Jimmy Swaggart, Billy Graham, and a host of other televangelists. There is a great Beatles medley that just got released from his final 1988 tour, where he reworked the lyrics to savagely attack Swaggart after he was caught with a prostitute. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds becomes Louisiana whore with herpes....FZ at his scathing best! When he wanted to, he was not shy about making a strong social, religious, or political commentary.

So glad you did the whole suite! Perhaps the definitive Zappa statement on his feelings on religion, particularly as relates to separation of church/state. And "Dumb All Over" was just brilliant. That's a song I used to just launch into singing in the kitchen (chef for decades) much to the entertainment and dismay of those around me. Good thing I was in charge!
Yes, he has a special fondness for ridiculing televangelists, so you're spot on about the first numbers. They definitely aren't the only numbers in his repertoire taking on televangelists and the like!
The important line out of those songs? "Do what you wanna, do what you will, just don't mess up your neighbor's thrill".
    Blessings

On the album, Dumb All Over fades out at the end of side 3 only to continue again at the beginning of side 4 then quickly melts into Heavenly Bank Account. So what you just heard was edited with Heavenly at the beginning edited to follow The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing which does naturally mend with Dumb All Over. It worked and was interesting to hear it for the first time that way. However, like some other people have commented before, the ideal manner to listen to this album is one complete side at a time. All the songs are continuously mending into the next, making it clear that the artist wanted you to listen to them in that specific order. One of very few albums Zappa prepared this way (We're Only In It For The Money (1968) comes to mind which is similar in terms of the concept being an audio journal to be listened to from start to finish but different mostly because the last track - The Chrome Plated Megaphone of Destiny - is completely apart and irrelevant to everything else). I enjoy watching you two getting Frank and his music. The juxtaposition of very strange time signatures spread across interesting melodies that have an abusive amount of notes coming from all the different musical families of instruments against absurdist, sometimes obnoxious, intense and/or just down right silly lyrics is always thrilling to my musical senses. It's always a blast to find kinder spirits. Cheers.

Zappa and his band performed three songs that had not been released at that point: "Dancin' Fool" from the 1979's Sheik Yerbout, "The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing" from 1981's You Are What You Is, and the instrumental "Rollo", which had been cut from 1973's Apostrophe (') and would remain unreleased until 2006's Imaginary Diseases.
That was his hosting stint, as a musical guest with Candice Bergen hosting he played I'm the Slime and Purple Lagoon with John Belushi on samurai sax! the last song was Peaches En Regalia...and yes there is video of all of it.

Heavenly reaction people but the order was dumb all over in my insignificant opinion. Seems to me that all nine tracks from 'you are what you is' to 'drafted again' form a suite and make more amusing sense when played in the order they appear on the album, even if you can't do them all at one time. (Ps. Although I knew many of the tracks individually I didn't realize how they connected until I recently played the whole album after you introduced me to part of the hilarious 'society pages suite'. Here is a cute little story... I was at the Rainbow Gathering in July of1981 (3 months BEFORE the release of this album) in Washinton State (near Usk). I met a cute little lady and we went to her tent and did what comes naturally. Afterwards... while tripping on LSD... we found a circle of people with a guitar. I mean... this girl was FALLING IN LOVE with me. THEN... I asked the guy if I could play his guitar... I did Comfortably Numb (I still think to this day that I was the FIRST person to put Comfortably Numb into my repertorie... I can't tell you how many fucking hippies I taught that song to) a bunch of Neil Young and some Cat Stevens... you know... the usual hippie sing along... the girl was REALLY STARTING TO DIG ME....MAN. AND THEN... I played at what the time was the only two songs from the suite that were available to hear on bootlegs... The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing... and Dumb all Over... but I didn't connect them...I just played one after the other... because on the bootlegs Meek was not yet attached to a suite... it was a lone song that came after Flakes in the song list.... and there was only ONE bootleg version of Dumb All Over available and that faded in on the song already in progress (But I had the "Crush All Boxes" tour guide with the lyrics to the song printed inside, so I knew the lyrics BEFORE I ever even heard the song) ... anyways... when I finished playing the songs... the girl said..."I'm a born again Christian...Fuck You. " And got up and walked away. Never saw her again... a year later... I married an Italian girl. The End.

As an Atheist, I kinda feel bad for Ray White, Frank's brilliant guitar player and soulful singer on this album, who happened to be a hardcore Christian
and who had to sing lyrics he must've felt came from the devil himself. In fact, Ray later quit the band because of those lyrics! 😂

I know that everyone is going to write this, but since I'm first.... I get credit. These songs were OUT of ORDER The actual order of the songs as they appear on the album... is ... side three 3rd song: The Meek Shall inherit Nothing... followed by the last song on side 3... Dumb All Over... THEN...on Side 4 of the LP the side starts with the COTINUATION of the guitar solo from Dumb All Over, and then segues into the first song you heard... Heavely Bank Account. I have no idea why someone would take the songs and remix them to an unsatisfying and baffling order with small sections cut out... but that's what you heard ...NOT what Frank wanted you to hear in the order that Frank designed it to be in. I suggest you find the album on youtube and listen to the songs in their correct order-... I know you liked them...but you'll like them more.

If you had the album on vinyl when it first came out, Dumb All Over would fade out like it did here. You would flip the record over and on the first song of that side Dumb All Over would continue in a different key and then it would segue into the next song.

Umm, the songs were out of order. Heavenly Bank Account segues into Suicide Chump. All the songs segue, Heavenly Bank Account should have been at the end, AFTER The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing followed by Dumb All over.

YAWYI is already in perfect order and should be listened to as the artist intended. The entire album could be considered a Suite, much too long for your channel. Live versions he has more latitude to mix things up.I have listened to this music numerous times both on LP and CD. You could pull random songs on a topic from any number of albums, say to make a "Groupie Suite" or "Sexual Perversions Suite" but that removes the impacts the songs have in the original LP order. I have all his LP's from Freak Out to Thingfish and all of the original CD releases and enjoy them all but have yet to get through Thingfish and Civilization Phase 3. May make it thorough those some day.

@@charlesbrowne5307 There are only so many hours in a life and I just haven't gotten to it yet. And we all have different tastes and what appeals to me may not appeal to anyone else. I love all of Zappas albums and CD's that I have but Thingfish came out when there were a lot of other things going on including the beginnings of the transition from Vinyl to CD and a big move from an apartment to a home and a huge transition in my work location. Many other of the albums I had at that time suffered the same fate. I have those LP's in a special place to go through someday. My parents died, my younger sister died, had several moves, lots of health issues, getting back to Thingfish was pretty low on my list of priorities. Man, as a Class of '83 alumnus, I clearly remember how messed up things were in Reagan-era America, with the rise of the Religious Right like a turd's stench making it rather scary for someone to the left of those nutjobs. Frank was the odd-man-out, offering political content in his music that could verge on the 'dangerous' -- addressing the notion that the 'God' who is supposed to have made us in His image is just as dumb and ugly as we tend to be. That's a hell of an idea to confront when your parents are dragging you to church every Sunday!
My 2 cents: Joel Osteen looks more like the actor who played Mclovin in "SUPERBAD" -- just sayin'.

I'm glad you guys said what you said at the end. All my life I've thought that everyone looks alike. It's racist to say all black people look alike, or all Asian people look the same. But truth is, we all look the same. We have very limited diversity in the gene pool, and I believe there are really only a dozen or so different faces, with minor differences within each.

Oh, Frank DEFINITELY knew about religion and understood it----he was raised Catholic, y'know---he was referring to something in the bible that we're all created in God's image....so if that's true, then He is dumb since "most" people are (according to Frank) as well as being ugly. I'm not sure FZ meant most people are ugly, probably not, just an extra dig at the end. It's mainly as you were saying the fanatics who are the dumbest, those who say our God is the only one and so on. The first section was about televangelists and fundamentalist preachers. The second song The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing is a song I really like, very bluesy and almost from the heart. I believe there is a video from when he hosted SNL back in '78 or '79 and he sings this song (it was around for a long time before he finally recorded it) and he does so with a lot of feeling, he really wanted the audience to get the meaning of the words. Of course, he had to say "butt is on the line" instead of ""ass". Tsk, tsk so much worrying about one word. LoL.
