      Wrong version,Peter K.
Different version from the original movie. Strictly genteel ,a great Zappa composition and video from the movie, but only effective after first watching most of the movie ,in order to familiarize yourself with the characters in the movie, making the montage scenes more understanding. But instead you put the listener in a state of confusion,as Dan demonstrated. Poor choice, Original was better,in audio format, in addition to not playing the Flo and eddies cool pop duet finale. Could be one of Frank's funkiest songs.
You didn't get this one right!

It’s a great song, which Frank used in concert finales many times. There are a few versions on the web. The one from the early 80’s band and the 88 band have better fidelity than this original version. It is a thoroughly composed piece, one of my favorites. Gives lots of feelz.

Yes, this one was labeled as all versions. So they splice together versions from different bands and different points in history. Listening to each version as it was actually recorded would get a different reaction.

The visual and all vocals are from his 1971 film 200 motels, but on top of the 71 version someone (not Zappa) has mixed in the 1983 Orchstreal version and the 1988 Live version to make this mutant version, it's a quite good mix but it's not an official release.
but im not surpised you were bored, don't count this as Zappa it's more a fan mix, wish you had reaction to the proper version

Re Sifa's comments about camera tricks: 200 Motels was the first movie to be filmed entirely on videotape, and was considered highly innovative for its time. Virtually every known videotape effect was exploited to its fullest, and a few new ones were discovered in the process. It was ultimately transferred to 35mm for theatrical distribution.
As Dan guessed and others have amplified, this is best seen in context. And, as a standalone piece, the unadulterated original is a better starting point for the uninitiated than this fan mash-up.
The bearded character at the beginning of the clip was Rance Muhammitz, who acted as the master of ceremonies throughout the film, and may have been Satan himself. Rance was played by actor/composer/folk singer/musician/political activist Theodor Bikel. He had an insane resume in his time, but has since fallen into obscurity with the general public.

You do need to see the whole movie at some point. This is only the first half of the real finale of the movie... There's a Rock section, that describes set teardown, performers getting paid and going home to their favorite vices, etc.
This is the only recording I know of outside the movie that includes the lyrics, and I think to appreciate the composition and instrument arrangement you need to hear an instrumental version.
    A couple of interesting things:
    1) This is the very first Cinema movie to be "filmed" entirely on Video Tape, making editing much easier and cheaper. It was then transferred to film when copies were made to send to theaters.
    2) Cast: The man singing was Theodore Bikel, a big star on Broadway during a lot of the 60s. As pointed out in another comment, Ringo Starr played "Larry the Dwarf", the movie's stand-in for Frank. Keith Moon played a Nun who was also a groupie.
    3) One of the band members (I think it was Jeff Simmons but I may be wrong) objected to some of the things Frank had him doing in the film and quit midway. This resulted in a few changes having to be made on the spot.
    4) The vocalists were Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, formerly of the Turtles.

Sifa, you are right. The visual was the main focus. Without pushing the music to second place. 200 Motels is the first feature movie shot in video. The video was than copied on normal film. Myself, I am not a big fan of 200 Motels.

Sometimes we are at odds, this time because I would have loved it. I think the melody is wonderful and the lyrics are definitely Zappa’s. And perhaps it’s different when you have listened to it for many years. Also, I grew up in the 70’s. All those could be components for different reactions

A few things about 200 Motels. It was the first movie filmed completely on video tape (another Zappa first) so they could do things with effects that could only be done on video. The orchestra in this movie is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the one that screwed up the Zappa Orchestral Favorites album was the London Symphony Orchestra. There are other great versions performed live, here is one ua-cam.com/video/9L5AJwnp6f0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=YourArf. Here is another ua-cam.com/video/xgXpBjU1VWQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=FrankZappa-Topic. As an aside, this song has my favorite arpeggio of all time near the end. And even though you don't listen to that "Classical S*#t" (sad for you) there is lots of amazing classical music. Zappa loved Varese, Holst, Stravinsky and others of that era. There are themes from "Rites of Spring" and "The Planets" on his Absolutely Free album. The great live album Yessongs opens with the dramatic ending from "The Firebird". Check out Holst's "The Planets" and be amazed that the Star Wars music is very similar to the Mars movement. Or listen to 'Pictures at an Exhibition", especially interesting as done by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Zappa didn't really like Mozart but there is lots of rockin classical music that will outlive anything we can come up with. Many famous people were in 200 Motels, including Pamala Des Barres, one of the most famous groupies of that era. Read "I'm With The Band" for some amazing stories about the LA music scene. She also babysat Zappa's kids!

Not surprised you were bored. This a fan made thing. The mixed the original 1971 version with a later orchestral version which not only caused much of the vocals to be buried but made the whole thing sound even sloppier than usual. And also the re-editing of the main scene with other scenes from the movie makes the viewing experience dull--the scene should've been presented as is. Still might not of enjoyed it but at least would've seen it and heard it as intended and judged it from that.
One of the reasons I generally hate fan made stuff on UA-cam. It muddies the waters and is never better than the original.

200 Motels the movie this is from is extremely bizarre and like being on a trip really.... there's a few good songs from this soundtrack but that's it, I agree with Sifa about the whole 70's sensory overload... there were many crazy movies in that era that don't really connect or make sense, I was bored too Dan! It's a slow going song for a bit but I've always gotten major tingles from some of the climactic parts near the end. It's one of my favorites. I think the melodic variations in it are great. This version is messed up though, sounds like a mess because as someone else mentioned it's some fan's mish mash of different recordings.

Watching this out of context is an exercise in futility. There is so much absurdity in 200 Motels and it all comes to a crazy head in Strictly Genteel. It's the finale. The lyrics are actually funny if you read them. The song isn't really a zappa song at all, it's the end of an insane piece of musical theatre which itself has some incredible songs: Magic Fingers; Shove it Right In; Mystery Roach. The through line of the movie is poignant and was the reason for Jeff Simmons quitting.

    It's not a song, it's a modern/classic composition for full blown orchestra.
The reason why Frank made rock albums is so that he could make money to have classic and contemporary orchestras play his more obscure scores. For more of this try the London Symphony Orchestra double album where you will find a more classical approach to Strictly Genteel.

You definitely need to watch the film, this is part of the closing sequence for the film and so is out of context. The lyrics carry a lot of this song as they are singing about making the movie that you just watched. Ringo is actually playing Larry the Dwarf who is playing Frank Zappa in the movie 200 Motels. Keith Moon is the groupie nun looking thru the harp.

The mix isn't great - it probably would have helped to have run the full lyric over the visual (since it's a pretty cheeky song) - but the music is full on Hollywood (1930's-thru-50's) pastiche, accurate to within an atom.
FZ could feel pretty aggrieved that no orchestra really got close to doing the (whole) thing right - considering that they would take the cash to do movie scores and then sneer at non-classical composers for not being sufficiently 'artsy'.

You must never forget that Frank is just as interested in what he can do as a classical composer as well as Rock, almost mocking the classical elite by saying I can write this stuff too. I much prefer the Orchestral Favorites version. You can really hear nuances of the arrangement. I think the 200 Motels version is a mess and not done with respect.
He's not gonna do a G/solo on every tune but he'll still show off his skills. Much Love guys.

200 Motels - Controlled and uncontrolled chaos Only for die hard Zappa fans... The mix of the song wasnt that good You have to hear everything in the context of the movie. It doesnt make much sense in the movie and even less out of context so I get it. On the upside , there are some "nifty rock and roll numbers"(as Frank might say) in the soundtrack The animated Cal Schenkel movie within a movie "Dental Hygiene Dilemma" is worth seeing. Hey, anyone who can get Ringo Starr dressed as a Dwarf dressed as Frank Zappa, Keith Moon in a nun suite OD'ing and Theodore Bikel in one stream of consciousness movie deserves a look - only Frank could pull it off. Well obviously he was conducting the orchestra and I don't know I guess you'd have to be able to hear the lyrics better it's hard with the operatic singing there are different versions of this that's actually an album called strictly genteel which has a different version but Frank didn't want it released the way that it was released just like sleep dirt and Studio tan it was all supposed to be on one record actually Frank went on some radio station and took the entire album the way it was supposed to be released and told everybody to turn on their tape recorders get their cassettes out or whatever and record the whole thing I do remember that course I will have to admit I did buy all the albums even though I probably should not have but they were pretty damn good sleep dirt and Studio tan monumental stuff there I can't remember what the album was called orchestral Maneuvers or something anyhow yeah there is a better version of that but it doesn't have the vocals there's another thing off of the one size fits all album The Last Song is kind of in that genre they had to do a song and sing in German there was some sort of a contract if you were going to do a live performance in Germany you had to do a song that was in German so they did that last song and that's the last song on the album of oh my gosh why am I spacing out one size fits all interesting thing when you look at the film you'll see the nun that's actually Keith Moon and Ringo Starr plays Frank Zappa he has a wig and a handlebar mustache and a goatee just like Zappa it's pretty hilarious all right Brooklyn residence

Frank was upset with the London Symphony Orchestra, but he always felt an orchestra to be a lumbering, mistake-prone behemoth compared to his "dangerous little eight-piece orchestra". This is the Royal Philharmonic with the Mothers, a decade earlier, in the movie/album 200 Motels. The mood of the song is driven by the lyrics, which are unfortunately harder to understand in this production than on the album. Part of the charm of the casting is seeing the stogy British orchestra being forced out from their proper instrumental character: some apparently considered such humor beneath them.
