.... absolute different league to any of the other VA's of the time and infact recently too - never leaving my studio. Inspirational, very versatile, superb FX and (unsurprisingly) sounds VERY analogue as you can hear. 5***** all the way, brilliant. Come on Yamaha - let's have a modern day version of this with all the latest cutting edge 'bell & whistles', but retaining the AN1X's >SOUL
Exactly. Certain synths I do not sell because they have that >SOUL< . Certain sounds that I designed on cheap keyboards like the CS1x, CS2x that have poor reputation still sound fresh and wonderful after many years. Actually, I just bought an AN1x to complement them, I think they will like each other. Very important that they have the same >SOUL< and similar emotion, and want to sound good together.
When you fill up all 127 patches on your keyboard and don't want to delete any of them (or Really have to think which one), then... you know. My TX81z and Korg 05R/W are much more dynamic and sonically rich but I've designed much fewer sounds on them because it takes sooooo long and cant change anything instantly on the fly. However, I have a large palette of patches/sounds to choose from on the CS1x/CS2x because I have almost instant access to all parameters, even if there aren't many.
Very nice job highlighting some of what this synth is capable of. I have had the pleasure of owning many fine synths over the years analog and digital. I wont name them all because its over 40 of them. Let me just say that if i was able to keep only one out of all of them for analog and ambient / textural type sounds it would have to be the AN1x. Its simply the most versatile and convincing.
Definitely one of the better AN1x demos out there! I'm just beginning to explore the possibilities of this synth. The editing structure is rather convoluted in the typical Yamaha fashion, lots of exceptions and inconsistencies. But the sound has one very important property: it's got character!
I love the track. It could have made a great soundtrack for the film, Metropolis. I could just see the robot workers on the machine. I feel so lucky to own this synth. Bought one 3 weeks ago. £370, mint, with original box, and a pair of JBL studio speakers and stand thrown in.I had been after one for years never thought I'd own one. Vastly underrated and overlooked, and a real classic.I own a JP8000, and the plastic easily knocked casing is the only simulatory. The Jp sounds very digital to me but has more controls. I also own a JD800 it is an armor-plated bomb proof monster of a synth. But I really love the AN1X the best. No it doesn't sound dated as the JP presets, but it's not so much the synth but the programmer to bring the best out of them. There are so many great sound sets out there, check out J B's are amazing.I also own, a CS1x, CS2X, An EX7, and a CS5.Yamaha synths are turning into my fav synths. i have Roland, Korg etc, but for the price of these beauties at present, they are practically giving them away. grab one while you can.The best VA out there for me.
Thanks for the demo! I still have this beast....I've checked your updated hardware images, with the opened WaveState...there's barely ANY electronics in that baby, despite the complexity, while the Yammy is full of IC:s, which is a good thing. I feel a bit disappointed that they used Raspberry Pi in the WaveState, that costs like 50 USD, I hoped for dedicated Korg circuits and so on...It seems that as long as you have tons of IC:s in a synth it creates a "sound magic", with more pleasant sounds... Great work, Dr! 🙂
Ammer Reduron Absolutely. If this gem had looked like a JUNO 60. It would now be consisdered a synth god. Thats how superficial too many people are. But for pure SONIC POWER and versatility. The AN1x is second to none. It will remain a hidden gem to far too many. Just the drum and bass sounds ive gotten out of mine have blown me away. I usually promote the DX7 on youtube. But its time to start showing the AN1x and its magic.
Still rock my 19 year-old AN1x on stage! I hate the weak casing though (I even chipped a key WHILE IT WAS IN A ROAD CASE!). I also recommend replacing the cheap stock plastic knobs with hard rubber ones (Chroma Caps) off DTTechTools .com (order the Super Knob sized ones). They are 100% compatible and look and feel slick!
@DrSqu I agree, JP-8000 is over-rated compared to AN1x. AN1x is really an amazing synth hidden in a body that fools a lot of people into under-estimating it's power.
superb demo, some beautiful sound design. I particularly like the surprisingly convincing 303. Had one of the synths for quite a few years and recently find myself regretting selling it, there are a lot of newer VAs that fail to match up to it. Cheers.
Wow, AN1x sounds great. And it includes phaser (not just a flanger/chorus effect like most synths), and it's cheap,.and it's a Yamaha keyboard so: a standard with a lot of new patches on the net, resistant keys & buttons, and so on... I'll buy one!
@realguy640 You need a midiconnection to a computer, in & out. Then i think the best way is to use the editorsoftware AN1x-Edit by Yamaha. It's not only very easy for editing the AN1x, it's also a good library tool for the organization of the sounds, and sound banks. It's a good way to store and load AN1x sounds. A screenshot you see at 3:56. It's a freeware what working well.
Very nice demo. I have a PLG150-AN in my Yamaha Motif 6. Basically it's like half an AN1x. I think you can put a PLG150-AN in an AN1x & increase the polyphony from 10 voice, to 15. As I'm writing this comment & listening, I must say again,....this is really a great demo. Excellent.
gjc82071 - Well that would be a nice thing, but alas i highly doubt it is possible.. I had my AN1X excensively serviced recently (new buttons etc).. The only 'expansion' socket in there, is for the daughter board that doubles the DSP to 10 voices. - No other way to expland past that :-(...
Phased Spaces Oh, good to know, (thanks) & that sucks. I also have a Korg Z-1 with DSPB-Z1 Expansion Board installed, (adds an extra 6 voices) & I have an EXB-MOSS installed on my Triton Pro X. It's a shame Yamaha didn't do something similar & allow you to install a PLG150-AN or something similar. Still though, the AN1x & PLG150-AN are great synths. PS: Can you tell me a little more about the AN1x "expansion socket" & the "daughter board"? Does it come stock/factory installed? Can you remove it? Is it just a PLG150-AN? Could you bought that daughter board in a Motif classic/ES?
@SpacehotelMusic In this days i've got an JP-8000 in my studio for first time, from a friend for some days. With the AN1x you can do more, really more. The JP-8000 also sounds nice, but another kind of style. In first step i feel more soft sounds in JP-8000 than an AN1x. Not only soft .... it simply means that the JP-8000 sounds other, not bad. Dont' compare between JP-8000 and AN1x ... take both ;-) ... But ok, if i MUST choose, i will take the AN1x. In this case i'm sure.
Yes, but you can still get the same basic type of sound, ya know? The EX5 (I have 1) has only 2 notes poly in AN mode. I want to buy an AN board for my Motif 6. Do you know how much poly the PLG150AN has? I've checked multiple sources, even at Yamaha, but it says only "increased poly, increase your ploy", etc. I'd like to know exactly how many notes of poly the AN boards has. BTW, what's your opinion: PLG150-AN &/or AN1X -VS- CS1, 2 & 6x? (&/or CS?x VS CS?x) & any/all of them -VS- Korg Z1/MOSS?
@SophisticatedAndy Or a cheaper Virus C? Maybe Supernova II? I love my AN1x, also Waldorf XT, Clavia NordMod, Access VirusC, little bit SH-201. All machines with another kind of sound. JP8000/8080 i doesn't like .... yes, now all in the world cut my head off! .. ;-) For me it seems boring me, not a bad sound, but also not really powerfully in diffrent kind of styles.
@SophisticatedAndy It's not easy to find the right answer ... Some hints: If you not really need a KB from JP8000, than take JP8080. An Virus Ti is a big monster, yes expensive, but it got lot of more functions, and a more width range of sounds. hmm... there i thinking about more VAs ... Novation, Clavia, Waldorf, DSI or Alesis A6 (real analog), .. you know ;-)
@moogwazhere All of the AN1x is very plastic, not a well hardware. The keys are ok, no noise. But it's to softly for a real pianoplayer. In my studio i've got many more bad keys than AN1x.
.... absolute different league to any of the other VA's of the time and infact recently too - never leaving my studio. Inspirational, very versatile, superb FX and (unsurprisingly) sounds VERY analogue as you can hear. 5***** all the way, brilliant.

the audio eng Waldorf Q, Alesis ION, etc.
I bought one like 16 years ago, still holding on to it. Very underrated and versatile synth.

AN2x in a solid case with lots of knobs!
This synth is butters. thanks for helping break my indecisiveness. I'm getting one.
I love the track. It could have made a great soundtrack for the film, Metropolis. I could just see the robot workers on the machine.

Cool demo! And because of it I decided for an AN1x!

Amazing !
What an underrated synth, I have to get one while its so cheap :)
most underrated synth ever!

PROJECT DX DX7 is crap. No knobs.
Amazing track man.....:)
I really enjoyed viewing photos of the circuit boards during the video. Now if I could just find a battery for my own AN1x.
The sound of analog, flexibility of VA ... best of both words !
Great track ! So glad I own one of these :) they are often SO underrated
@tionik06 Please don't give up at listening by some presets. The AN1x grows with editing :)

Thanks for posting that. Very enjoyable. I like the pads and the melody in the upper registers.
@DrSqu I meant i like it, and i'm going to buy one.

Is it easy to program sounds on? I had a micron but i hated all the menu-diving.
@realguy640

Kirk!!!! ;-) I understand :) In this case i also think about Novation Supernova 2.
Viel Spass! Empfehle sehr AN1x-Edit :)
Great job.
Danke! Ich habe hier ja so paar Kistchen stehen, aber der AN1x gehört zu meinen Top-Favoriten :)
@SophisticatedAndy
