Man this movie sent me out of the movie theater crying. It’s crazy how this movie came out almost 3 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I got picked up from school, told I was going to see this movie, and complained. But when I walked out, I saw everything and everyone differently yk? It truly had a message that would hit you hard if you understood it. And now this is one of my favorite movies.

in my middle school ELA class we had book clubs for social issues. i was placed in the book club for The Hate U Give. We were supposed to read it in parts at a time but i got so invested in the book that i read the whole thing the same week we got it. its so eye opening and now i see the things my friends and family and even i do that are wrong. thank you, Angie Thomas, and any other writer who is bringing these issues to light. you're all saints.

I hate that Khalil reached for the brush and was joking around about it. That didn’t happen in the book. It’s a small detail, but it really matters. In the book, the brush is simply in the car. Having him reach in for the brush just gives the cop a reason to shoot him. I can’t get over that detail.
The piece from that book shouldn’t be changed in the movie, because it makes a big difference in what people think of the story itself. It made Khalil look like someone different.

This story is so inspiring, and as someone who has never had to experience racism the most eye-opening story I’ve ever had the privilege to watch/read. I’m very glad it’s on my school curriculum. It breaks my heart that people have to go through oppression like this

I saw this around the beginning of this year, watched it again in March. And now watched it again today after all that's been happening. Always makes me cry in the end.
It's not current. This has been happening over and over again for decades. We've just finally developed the technology accessible enough for the general public so that the victims can be heard and seen.

I just finish watched this movie, I've been crying for the entire movie. I am an asian and I didn't lives in the countries with this kind of problem. But I felt the pain that Starr got. She felt guilty but scared at the same time, she wants to do somethjng but she is afraid for what happen next and she still took all the risk, she is stood for her friends, family, especially for herself even tho the cope & the entire society in there didn't hear her voice, she still stood for the justice.

I’d love to see a movie starring Amanda , Yara Shahidi , China Anne McClain, Zendaya, & Skai Jackson. Beautiful young black girls with substance and class. Trin May23 yes it does. When you take mixed people and make them the face of black women, it’s a problem. It’s called colorism. It’s the same mentality of the house slave and the field slave. The light ones were the “preferred” and that’s a problem. It just farther spreads self hate unto black people. Dark skinned men and woman not wanting to have kids with somebody their complexion, because they think it’s ugly, out of fear of having kids with that complexion. It’s real. Which is why a lot of dark skinned people grow up wanting to be lighter, (I was in that group, but not anymore) because they associate it with being white, and therefore, better.

The movie, the book, both of them are perfect. Ive owned the book for a bit before actually reading it, and before I knew there was a movie. The first time I watched the movie, I was in tears. It was some time in 2020 during the BLM protest - and as a young black girl you can imagine how it all felt. Especially being a young black girl who also felt like I had to separate my two identities from the world. If i could watch this movie for the first time again, I would do so without hesitation. If you have the time, I'd recommend watching the movie or reading the book. Personally, the book goes into deeper detail about everything and feels more like real life instead of actors reading off of a script. 10/10
this is one of the most powerful and unforgettable movies ever with a great cast too

Check out "When They See Us" about the Central Park 5 on Netflix if you haven't already. I cried out loud like the ugly cry. Crazy part is seeing white people still getting defensive when it could be so healing and empowering even for them to just say "I'm sorry" and change the behavior.
This movie is talking about a serious message, yet some people are complaining about the actress being light skin. In fairness I've never read the book, but apparently no one is sure what Star looks like. On the cover it's a dark-skinned girl, but some say she was light others say dark. Black is black no matter what shade you are. I'm sure this pointless topic all started when black family comedies replaced a dark-skinned actress with a light-skinned one. I found that annoying myself as well, but this movie shouldn't be judged on whether the girls skin is too light. Being black isn't about the shade of your skin or where you live or how you talk. It's about being who you are.

At least now a days it’s recognized and talked about to the world. Back in the days, no one had a voice or whatsoever. Today everything can be fixed (it takes time but it does) because we post about it and make it heard. Most importantly it gets HEARD
I read the book and it really touched me. As a white from one of the most safest countries on earth (Nordic lands) it made me realize how badly things are still going on here and how there's still a lot of racism on this Earth. The book made me feel I should do something but it also made me feel so small. I guess all I can do and the best way to help the situation is to be open minded and do anything I can to stop racism and learn.

Whoa whoa.. there was no hairbrush in the book. Why does Hollywood always have to add their own flare. The whole point was that he didn't do ANYTHING to give the officer suspicion.

@@poly8899 but he didn't pick up the hairbrush in the book. in the movie he picked up the hairbrush and joked with it, but in the book he solely went to the window to ask if starr was okay. and that small detail completely changes what happened to khalil. in the book it is solely an unjustified killing because he was asking starr if he was okay. in the movie it is possible to argue that it was justified because the cop wasn't to know if it was a hairbrush or a gun. that's the one thing i really hated about the movie - as well as devante not being there - but apart from those two details, it was a powerful, emotional movie that i really loved.

This movie is not anti-police. It’s anti-police brutality. The main character had a lot of healthy conversations with her uncle who is a cop. This book also goes into why things are the way they are. Yes, it’s fiction, but it’s meant to being awareness to many true events.
Doesn't seem like they made it obvious it was fiction. Police officers just want to do there job and keep people safe but the Americans seem to blame them for everything
I think police brutality exists but doesn’t happen that often. Like I know there are racist police offices I’m not denying that. But just for a minute put yourself in the place of a police officer chasing someone down saying “put your hands behind your back” and they aren’t listening. Now imagine that the person you’ve been chasing down after resisting arrest stops and starts to reach for something. Now what they’re reaching for may or may not be a gun, knife, etc but as a police officer fearing for his/her thinking that they’re about to pull a weapon out as the police officer with a gun are you going to wait to find out? Also during this ordeal how much does the race of this person matter with the greater context?
TEMM bruh smh. This is a movie 95% of movies are Fiction. Typically when it is a non-fictional movie. The producers will put the is a true story. But any ways. The real reason for my response was simply that in urban neighborhoods predominantly minority’s most of the police are racist and usually break the laws bend the truth and set up people who they feel are Thugs. I needed to read this book for my study (English teacher), I live in The Netherlands and I ‘m grateful that my school requires me to read this. It’s a important story to tell and make us students aware of this problem in America!
So the book illustrates the struggle of this girl as she tries to balance the pressures of being not-black-enough and too-black. Combing through the comments, I see people using the same arguments that make Starr uncomfortable in her neighborhood, school, and society. I'm really looking forward to the movie, and I'm hoping that we learn something about ourselves when we watch it.

So, before you share your hateful thoughts about the movie, make sure you have read the book/understand its message so you know why it's important that this movie hits theaters.
I hope this movie actually handles the subject properly and not just "Cops are evil" and "people should become violent to get their point across" because both of those things are extremely harmful and will turn this into another "13 reasons why" situation.

FrozenGallows I didn't say or mean 'all cops are bad', I just talked about the situation in general. And to me (as a reader of the book) the rioting is kind of a symbol (in the book) for the main character's frustration, whether or not it's the right reaction is a different story. there are different voices about rioting in the book (whether it's a good reaction or not) so I think/hope they will be present in the movie as well.

This is one of the most powerful movies I’ve ever seen and it’s just amazing, it shows how hard it is to be black and how they judge you just for your skin color, this was an experience to watch and I loved the acting

No hate to Amandla (or Zendaya she's my idol), I'm super hype to see this movie, but It's always Zendaya or Amandla that's cast as black women in movies. Even when the character is specified as medium brown/cocoa color they still choose one of Hollywood's "typical" black girls. As a dark skin teen who was super psyched for a dark skin or medium skin girl to play the role, I was a little disappointed, but not surprised, by their choice for the lead role. Amandla's gonna be amazing though, no hate towards her at all, I'm still super psyched to see it. I just wish they would venture out and discover all the amazing dark skinned actresses that could do this role just as well and fit the description in the book. It's more than just skin tone, it shows the implicit effect of colorism in society and the movie industry.

Coming from someone who isn't really black. It''s not what the mainstream media represents. Black people notice a lightskin issue cause they will always look for it. It seems like more an issue between your own race rather that a real world issue. Most notable black women are "darkskin". When any other race tells you who comes to mind when you think black women. Movies, politics, music etc. Both positive and negative it's a dark skin woman. They probably can't even name 5 light skin women or anyone beisdes beyonce.

I don’t understand why they changed the scene where the cop pulls him over, in the book Khalil never reached into the car to grab the hairbrush.
By changing it I feel like it’s not giving the story justice, because if a person were to reach for something in their car in real life it would be a much different scenario than the one in the book and some people would think that the shooting may have been justified in some way, the thing that makes Starr’s story so messed up is the fact that they didn’t do anything wrong.
If this was just a way to include the hairbrush in there they could’ve done it differently.
The real story, the one in the book, never had Khalil, the boy who was shot, grab the hairbrush. The only thing he did was check on Starr to asks if she was okay. I have no idea why the movie changed it because people who haven’t read the book will now interpret it wrong and may say the shooting was justified but that isn’t what actually happened.
If you read the book you can clearly see that the police officer was being excessive and more aggressive than was necessary. The cop was not doing his job right. The reason everyone was protesting and rioting was because this was a 16 year old black kid living in a neighborhood that was known for drugs, violence, etc, and that was ultimately the reason he was shot, due to racial profiling the cop just assumed they were bad kids and they were up to no good. And let’s be honest if this were a white person or a person with light skin this would not have been the result, there are steps that need to be taken and there’s proper protocol for everything. Because he was a black man he was automatically suspected.
And to the people who may say that the cop was scared for his life, that’s not a reason to take the life of a kid, of a living breathing person, because of an error in judgment. Cops are properly trained for those types of situations, and what the cop did in this story was clearly wrong and misguided.
So no, no it was not his fault that he got shot, he didn’t point the gun at himself.
Gabby T. The movie appears to add more nuance but it really doesn't when you analyze it. He reached for an object but he never aimed it at the cop, he was facing the girl in the car the whole time. If a cop sees the slightest movement that's not even aimed at him and perceives it as a threat, he was already jumpy and thought they were potential threats to begin with. Besides, who wants a country where the slightest movement equals being shot?

BiteSize__ I could understand if the cop was literally right next to him, and interpreted a sudden movement at close range as an attack, the same way you'd be startled if I snuck up on you. Yet if I'm quite a few feet away from you and you can't stop, look, and assess the situation before firing a lethal weapon then you're just a jumpy scary coward. I legally own a firearm, I don't shoot the cat at the edge of my driveway at 4AM cause "it suddenly moved (even though it was 20ft. away from me) and I thought it was a threat".
