    If you have purchased a new NAS Drive in the last few months, then chances are that you would use it to the best if its abilities increasing the memory to the maximum in order to run more apps and allow more users to access the device at any time. The latest 2020 Generation of Synology NAS (the DS920+, DS420+, DS720+ and DS220+), much like the older gen devices, all arrive with the ability to upgrade the memory to 8GB, but some users like to push this limitation, using unofficial memory from brands like crucial or Kingston, installing bigger and faster memory. Generally speaking, Synology NAS has a long-standing reputation for being underpowered when compared to brands like QNAP and Asustor, at least out of the box, choosing to focus on their award-winning DSM software. This is changing a bit in 2019/2020 with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. Today’s post will cover my thoughts on the usefulness of upgrading the factory-installed RAM, how to determine if a RAM upgrade is needed at all and exactly how to do this. Let’s start with the latter, do you need to upgrade RAM?

    Added an 8gb Kingston card, as recommended in a previous video.
    Went like a dream and now I'm running with 12 GB. Thanks for the advice.

    I put in this bad boy (previously used by NASCompares in vid) as I wanted a ram level that I don't need to touch for 5 years: Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHz CL19 1.2V Dual Ranked 2Rx8. Works a treat and cost me $80 AUD. Boom. Thanks

    I was browsing the Plex forums and read an interesting explanation on how DSM handles RAM relative to the CPUs max addressable RAM.
    In short, the Intel J4125 CPU cannot address more than 8GB of RAM. DSM can recognize more (e.g., 20GB). However if the system were to use more than 8GB, “the kernel will start overwriting memory from other processes - which will cause it (DSM) to crash and very likely corrupt data on the volume.”
    Adding more RAM is certainly a hot topic on this sub, especially those with x20+ devices. I’ve never witnessed my DS920+ exceed 8GB RAM use, but for those who run many docker and VM applications beyond the CPUs stated limits are you seeing data corruption/kernel overwrites?

    Another great Synology video! Addicted to your channel from the US! 😁👍🏻
    Am interested in your unofficial memory tests/recommendations for the new DS1621+ since of course I just got one! 😬 It looks like it need DDR4 ECC SODIMM memory. Not sure about Dual Rank. Thanks again for some very informative videos. I got the 1621 after watching your review. 😉

      Read my other comment, plus the below (this is for 2x16GB ECC 2Rx8 SODIMM DDR4):
      KSM26SED8/16ME (Kingston w/ Micron ICs)
      KSM26SED8/16HD (Kingston w/ Hynix ICs)
      M474A2K43BB1-CTD (Samsung w/ Samsung ICs)

    TLDR: Don't buy extremely overpriced Samsung RAM with Synology stickers.
    I am using Kingston KSM26SED8/16ME (Micron ICs) 2x16GB 2Rx8 ECC SODIMM in my DS1821+s. The original "Synology" RAM has Samsung ICs. I have already done several TB of rsync without issues. Also passed Synology assistant memory test.
    Disclaimer: Synology does not produce their own RAM at all. The big producers are Micron/Crucial, Kingston, Samsung, Hynix... Synology only puts their Synology stickers on Samsung RAM, that's it... However, I do get a warning within DSM on boot that my Kingston RAM is not "Synology" (aka Samsung) RAM. This is harassment and scaremongering, which imho Synology should be sued and fined for. IF my RAM were to ever stop working within DSM (aside from mechanical failure) it would be Synology's (wrong-)doing and not the RAM itself, but I doubt Synology would want a class action.

    • @deinemuddaisdoof
      @deinemuddaisdoof 3 роки тому +1

      Not sure if there are dual rank (2Rx8) 8GB DIMMs easily available. Synology is hiding pictures and detailed specs of "their" (Samsung) RAM for a reason... Just check your original RAM or find reliable images / specs of the "original" Synology RAM, and then get the "non-Synology" alternative :)
