    Gunnar Shaffer, thank you for making this great tutorial and keeping it up! Since you have a company that now sells these it shows you are very honest.
    I have been growing tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and lettuce for many years using hydroponics and have been very successful at it. I have always wanted to build a vertical tower using 2 inch net pots but it was a challenge until now. This will save me a lot of space and I will be able to grow even more than I did before. I also plan on trying this method using a 55 gallon food grade drum. I would hook it up to a high pressure aeroponics unit I plan on building.
    I've had many people ask me about how they can start up a hydroponics unit. I will give them your website information.

    • @Chillerll
      @Chillerll Рік тому

      Using a barrel is actually a really good idea. I might do that instead of a pipe.

    • @KAYAKERSTAN
      @KAYAKERSTAN Рік тому

      @@Chillerll If you plan on using a 55 gallon food grade barrel you would need to set it up with a high pressure aeroponics spray system. You'll need 60-80 PSI in order to get enough micro misting spray to reach the roots of the plants you want to grow. This type spray system can be pretty expensive. Gunnar's pipe system can be run using a low pressure water pump which is much easier to run and the cost is much lower compared to high pressure aeroponics. If you've never grown hydroponically before start with a low pressure system like Gunnar's. When you get good at it you can then look at trying high pressure aeroponics as you will already have experience growing hydroponically.

      Gunnar Shaffer hey Gunnar, was curious how you made sure all netcups got covered with water in the tower?

    • @GunnarShaffer
      @GunnarShaffer  10 років тому +1

      ***** How can I do this? (First comment, did you finish?) At first you will have to watch and see how the water is dropping through the tower but I had no problem except with a cup or 2 in all 9 towers. Once the roots grow they create an entire column of roots in the center.

    • @KHwellness
      @KHwellness 10 років тому

      Yes I finished 1 tower, have been trying different methods but water isnt getting near the bottom netcups via the small drip holes in the bottom of 2 liter bottle. I only got 16 slots rather than 22, because I made a base out of part of the pipe.
      thinking of dropping tubing down the inside of pipe and puncturing holes in it to let it sprinkle water on all netcup levels. What do you think of that idea?

    • @GunnarShaffer
      @GunnarShaffer  10 років тому

      ***** Yes totally. For lettuce it is great actually because the competition from the plants being offset by 5 inches forces them to reach for the sun. This is also why competition in free markets is necessary to create growth. YES for tomatoes you may only want a few holes. :) The good thing is that it is totally flexible.

    This appears as a very good idea. However, I did this exact design after watching this video. the idea is great but there were some problems in its function. The sides of most of the cups leaked due to water splashing out of the corners of the cuts. Also I found it challenging to how to mount the pipe and stabilize it in a hydroponics system. I think with some good ideas and some modifications this could be successful. Thanks for the idea. Any mods to solve these problems would be great to hear.

    Gunnar, thank you for your informative video. I have a couple of questions:
    1) Is there any additional media in the 4" vertical pipe except for the media in the net pots? For example, a sheet of Matala filter media along the back wall to provide additional filtering and water distribution.
    2) I can't tell how far the net pots go into the lumen of the 4" pipe, but I would be concerned that the water might just fall straight through from the supply at the top and miss some or most of the pots and, for example, run along the back wall of the pipe to the bottom. How do you distribute the water so that it engages the net pots and their media throughout the system? Drip? Spray? etc. . . .

    • @GunnarShaffer
      @GunnarShaffer  10 років тому +1

      1. Only the Hydroton/Rockwool in the net pots. A Matala filter was not necessary. The water runs in the middle just fine. don't forget to watch my other video of the completed system.
      2. The water does not fall straight through. It drips from one net cup to the next and when there are roots the form one column in the middle and we experienced no leakage.

    Fantastic idea that I'd like to copy. Do all plants all the way to the bottom get water? Since seen from the inside the holders for the net cups stick out I suspect that the water runs to the left and right of the hole rather than into the net cup? 🤔

    • @GunnarShaffer
      @GunnarShaffer  5 років тому +1

      That is a great question that we get asked often. We only make towers with 4in PVC, 3in is too small to curve and heat mold. Where as anything bigger than 4 leaves to much of an empty space in the middle of the tower. The water delivery is near perfect as you drop the water in the center.

      Its easier to use open rubber grommets and 135 degree plumbing elbows, no sealant required and no leaks. Using netpots in a 4" dia vertical tower takes up valuable root space.

      Actually I already made my wedge, didnt turn out like yours, but I think it still might work. How long are your slits in the pipe b4 heating for the netcups to fit in, slightly wider than a netcup or same width? Im gathering my supplies, im making a stand and drainage pipe that the tower sits in.

      I only sawed until the blade way all the way in the pipe so about 1.5-2 inches. Send me pictures of whatever you create would be nice to see and keep sharing.

      I'll try to do that. Just spent the day yesterday creating a stand for the tower. Now gunna make the tower itself. I am keeping the hub on, to have a low tech bottle feed watering system at top. 2 liter bottle. I dont have fish, just doing hydroponics, not aquaponics. Gotta figure out how to protect bottle from sun, I was thinking of painting it white like my windowfarm reservoirs. But not sure if thats enough. The bottle idea is temporary till I can rig up more controlled system.

    Great concept , I like the idea of the vertical garden. I'm working on something similar at the moment. Have you found a better way to put the net pots in the pvc vertically? I don't like the idea of using a torch and I'm trying to make it as neat as possible. Keep up the great work by the way!

    • @GunnarShaffer

      Heat gun its easier. The heat gun I had just wouldn't melt the plastic fast enough. Even with the torch I made it extremely neat with no burn marks.
