My professor Dick Norris and his brother were actually the first people to discover how the rocks move because they stayed there for days there trying to observe them. It turns out whenever there is a thin layer of water on the lake bed, it can freeze beneath the rocks. The high winds then push the rocks over the icy lakebed for quite a distance
Yep, read the article about the physics and specific weather patterns required to move those rocks just before heading in. Had to stop and tow an idiot out who thought that a Prius is the ideal vehicle to pass by a "High clearance required, 4x4 recommended" sign. Normally I wouldn't have, they were only like 1.5 miles in, but it was a hot day in early summer (around 100) and I figured those people will start walking around the desert without water in search of help and that's no good. Can't have people dying because of stupidity. Well, got them to the crater and headed back in again. Had a nice lunch right there watching the rocks - they didn't move though :-)
@@uweschroeder -- Well, that's how nature culls the stupid, LOL... Still, it was probably a good idea to help them out. If I remember right, didn't some German tourists die in Death Valley after getting stuck in a mini van?
@@ironcladranchandforge7292 Yes. Family of 4 IIRC. They got pretty far in their minivan. Was a bit more north. They drove up to some of the cabins and pretty much made it there despite flat tires. Not trying to steal your professors thunder but me and my friends figured it out in grade school lol. Did my science fair project on it and failed ironically. I guess blowing rocks around a muddy frozen cookie sheet with a fan wasn’t scientific enough. As a kid we loved to race our dirt bikes across the lake beds. After a big rain the top crust of the lake bed turns into and amazing lubricant and makes sort of a waterproof barrier for the ground below it. The mud was only a few inches deep and the crust prevented it from becoming a mud bog. We would come off the desert and hit the lakes at full throttle basically hydroplaning across the thin layer of water on the surface. The back end would start to break loose, swapping from side to side. You could do amazing drifts until you pushed it too far which is where the fun part came in (accidentally discovered of course). Once you pushed it too far the back end would break loose and the bike would slide out from underneath you like a spinning top. The bike would slide across the lake bed followed by a kid on his back laughing hysterically across the worlds largest slip and slide. The faster you went the further you would go. The key was committing to the drifts and laying it down in a controlled over-drift. Hours of fun on that old air cooled KX 60. We would come home a jubilant muddy mess and probably nearly hypothermic. I remembered a teacher showing us pictures of the mystery rocks and it clicked to me how they moved. Anyone who lives in this area has experienced the insane winds at times.

We do a simple Carne Asada for camping. 1/3 cup olive oil. Juice of 3 squeezed limes, 2 oranges. A tablespoon of Cumin, a tablespoon chile powder, three minced cloves of garlic and a handfuil of finely chopped Cilantro. A lb of thin, flank steak seasoned with salt, pepper . Throw the steak in with the rest as a marinade in a big ziplock bag. Throw it on the grill for a couple of minutes and you have Carne Asada tacos! You can pre make this and throw it in your camping fridge. The longer it marinates, the better it gets.
If I were to try to eat the Asada, it would have NO habenero. My stomach would be very, very angry with me. I live in New Mexico not far from the Hatch Valley where they grow some very good chilli's. The food looked very good.
That flyover was nuts! At that altitude, it had to rattle your bolts loose... the ones in your head at least. Here in Somerset County, NJ we were fortunate enough to get flyovers all the time, due to responding to civilian pilots unknowingly entering restricted airspace, when our former President used to visit a certain golf course. Nothing gets more exciting for us folks who only know what's life like on the ground.
I saw the old painted on sigh that said "thieves will be prosecuted". It mad me think of a sign I saw on my dad's brother's property when I was a kid. Loved seeing more of the cabin from your last “coffee episode” w/ Marco! Also the flyover came over AMAZING even on video! Your excitement was palpable 😆
This is why I don't watch network/cable television anymore. I've had enough of the constant panic drama from the news and shows that border on insulting to watch. It's Sunday morning for me today and this set of videos from TrailRecon are absolutely enjoyable. I have recently retired, have some obligations to close out, but then I can see myself hitting the road for plenty of sight seeing, scenery soaking and just not being in such a hurry all the time! My sincere compliments to all those involved with TrailRecon and producing this set of videos. I wish my girlfriend looked at me the way Marco looks at someone eating his food! Have been watching your videos since I bought my first Wrangler, I finally upgraded and got a 4 door! Love the videos man.
If your girlfriend doesn't look at you like Marco does, then you may have a problem with the girlfriend or you may not have known her long enough. Good luck, everyone needs someone to show appreciation for an artist and Marco appears to be a true artist.
I remember years ago the Blue Angels were in MA at hanscom in Bedford for an air show and they did a fly over on rt. 128 at rush hour guys myself included pulled over to the side of the road to just watch. These are some of the coolest videos. I got me a 1995 gmc jimmy it’s under construction my truck needs a lot of love . It needs a lot of work But one day I would like to go on a Journey like you guys do. I live in the Coachella Velley. We just had TDS Terra Del Sol. this pass weekend out in ocotillo Wells out by the salt in sea. I love your excitement when the jet flew by! I’m the same way! I’m in awe every time I see one. The bad part is that “Danger Zone” immediately cues up in my head and stays there for the rest of the day! 😆

Awesome video brad, Marco out did his self again wow, great job on the photography really captured some great shots, great stuff guys as always be safe 👍👍👍👍
Your reaction to that flyover is awesome! That’s exactly how I would’ve reacted in that situation. Completely raw and true life. Nice trip you guys are on!
I know I already posted, but having run a similar route a week prior, there is so much more awesomeness that wasn’t mentioned in your video. Death Valley is truly an awesome adventure and I highly recommend this adventure to anyone. Nice work Brad! Another stand up video 👍🏻
I'v been waiting for such a great adventure by Trail Recon, and here it is, always meets expectations and deserves to wait for. Cheers mates, thanks for the great content.
Star Wars canyon! So cool when the jets are flying. I was airing down off of Panamint Valley rd and had an F18 fly about 30' over the top of my truck. Actually made it bounce up and down on the ground! How can you not just start jumping up and down and running around in circles when something like that happens!!!!
It looks like you guys went to Star Wars Canyon, where NATO pilots go to practice low-level flying. As an avgeek, it's definitely one of the top spots on my bucket list of places to visit.
Brad what an amazing adventure, thank you so much for sharing... This is a testament to traveling the back country in a group is a good idea as you never know when something will break.
The Navy shut down flights through Star War canyon when that pilot crashed and died. Made 12 trips into DV last year, never saw any military aircraft flying low elsewhere in the park. Hanging out in around Beatty I saw plenty hugging low to the ground, that was cool to hear and see.
Cool area with lots of history. Rode into Panamint Springs about 2pm years ago on a dirt bike, had lunch, then left about 3:30 and rode up past Cerro Gordo and past the salt tram then down to Lone Pine for the night at about 8pm, in early May.
Alright! The band's back together! Great to see Marco again. That looks like a fantastic trip you're on. I wish we had places like Death Valley in New Zealand, so I have to live vicariously through you. :)
Great video. That first cabin you came to off the Saline valley road is actually on the park grounds unlike the others. The forest is called the Hunter mountain range and it is filled with ancient Indian camp sights as well as petroglyphs galore. The hunters cabin is actually an old Edison cabin from the early 1900’s. The old tram for the salt mines still exists and can be accessed from the Owens lake on the Cerro Gordo trail. Now you have to explore the Briggs cabin, and. Chicken rock, South Park and the Indian camp site. The world beater cabins...... so much more
Another great video...we are heading for the east side of DV in two weeks. As for ice cream, I now have two fridge freezers. I won’t say ice cream on the beach spin Baja was a prime motivator....but, if you love ice cream.....plus ice cold adult beverages.....well, can’t see myself going camping without an electric fridge ever!
@@TrailRecon a one take coffee talk with nate? Haha that's cool. I'm from northern ca.(the real norcal 😆) and it would be wild to see you out in Tahoe or in the central Sierra's. coyote flats has been am area of interest since your video. Thanks for the content!
I love watching the videos makes me very envious in the late 80s early 90s I was stationed at Fort Irwin and I wish I would’ve had a jeep back then. I moved to Florida from New England and I’m not a real big mud fan but that’s OK I still love my jeep!
Another great video! Really dig seeing your adventures across landscapes that I hope to someday drive myself. A quick editing comment -- you may want to consider adding the TrailRecon intro video to the end of the video as well to create a more graceful wrap up. The videos always seem to end abruptly right when I'm "in the zone" and having the TR video/music at the end would ease viewers into the mindset that the video is about to end. Food for thought. 😃
Overall I probably couldn’t keep up with you guys but I’m so appreciative to see the views and trails you travelled. That jet was the icing on the cake. I can only imagine how awesome that was in person
Quilty me, have been absent watching the channel for a while. 🙃 Say, is it just me, or have you guys been amassing more and more creature comforts? I see Jeep Tucks and Trailers.
Thanks, Brad! Hope your interesting trips never end! I long for the opportunity to visit the United States again, this time in an Offroad vehicle. Take care! Best regards from a dedicated fan in Norway.🤘
Brad, I love your videos! I live vicariously through your adventures. On a different note, have to ever thought about teaming up with Marco and creating an "Overlander's Cookbook"? Your pictures and narration and Marco's recipes would be a best seller! You could probably even get some sponsorship from companies like MSR and Jetboil.
We went there last year and I found it quite beautiful also.Thank God I have a ZR2 diesel because the miles we racked were crazy! It seems like everything is 100 miles away.
Its pretty cool Marco cooks all that grub and doesn't even eat red meat. You also have me wanting to sell my locked/geared Tundra on 37s with 3" bypasses lol
Rent from Pacific Overlander in LA, SF, or Las Vegas and they provide fully equipped overland vehicles and trailers (minus the rock crawling mods)... Death Valley or Baja is a perfect destination from there. I used it to bring four other families who didn’t have rigs like mine up to Coyote Flats and we’re doing DV later this month with the same outfitter
@@youtubecarspottersguide1 I meant have a few friends book all at once :) one of my crew went out and bought a Tacoma after that... just need to work on the others.
Get on the Jeep Forums & search local/regional events. That’s how I’ve done a couple trips here in NorCal. You often don’t have to own a Jeep either; many groups welcome other makes.
I love the look on Marco’s face when people are eating his food. So proud.
He always looks so happy talking about his cooking and his Jeep.

@@daviddowling9830 I think it's probably good to go during Red Flag or whenever there's a large exercise going on.
Brad what an amazing adventure, thank you so much for sharing...
This is a testament to traveling the back country in a group is a good idea as you never know when something will break.
I watched the fly over over and over. Amazing shot! Love your videos!
So happy to see overlanding videos coming back! These get me so amped up for my next adventure!
You guys are legends. Thanks for sharing this passion with so many. The friendships here are spectacular. Looking forward to more episodes.
Marco is the real mvp! Coming in clutch with that ice cream
Even before I’m 5 seconds into your Video... I’ve clicked LIKE 😃... Because I know it’s going to be good... You’ve never missed yet 👍😃☕️☕️
You're the best!
Looking forward to the next episode. Hoping to see the hot springs and that observation platform looks interesting for sure.
The world beater cabins...... so much more
Man that jet flyover was amazing.
I like your videos a lot and I also like the music. It fits perfectly. I'm from Germany and love your adventures.
Great Video! What I truly appreciate about Marco is from what I understand, he is a vegetarian, but cooks all these meat dishes for all his friends!
The PW is cool, but wow that red Jeep and red trailer looks amazing together, nice setup
You and dirt lifestyle on the same day. That's a good day.
Love Nates content... he and I were just out camping together a couple days ago.
@@TrailRecon a one take coffee talk with nate? Haha that's cool. I'm from northern ca.(the real norcal 😆) and it would be wild to see you out in Tahoe or in the central Sierra's. coyote flats has been am area of interest since your video. Thanks for the content!
Excellent overlanding
Tea kettle junction. Was there first week of May this year on my way to the Racetrack. Love Death valley 💕
Flyover was awesome! 7:00 great video!
I love the Arkansas shirt, hopefully I’ll see you pass by during your trip through!
Quilty me, have been absent watching the channel for a while. 🙃
Say, is it just me, or have you guys been amassing more and more creature comforts?
I see Jeep Tucks and Trailers.
GREAT VIDEO! Especially the timing with the fighter jet
I love Lippincott Pass. One of my favorite 4x4 roads.
Man, those were restaurant grade dinners that you wont expect on a remote trail.
Thanks for the Great Video. Looking forward to heading out again this spring and summer.
Its pretty cool Marco cooks all that grub and doesn't even eat red meat.
You also have me wanting to sell my locked/geared Tundra on 37s with 3" bypasses lol
Your personal flyover how cool is that ✈✈✈
It was so epic! Maybe not captured very well on camera, but burned in my memory forever.
@@TrailRecon I'm sure it will be 👍
fun trip.. wish I had a crew to go over landing with
Was thinking the same 👍
Rent from Pacific Overlander in LA, SF, or Las Vegas and they provide fully equipped overland vehicles and trailers (minus the rock crawling mods)... Death Valley or Baja is a perfect destination from there. I used it to bring four other families who didn’t have rigs like mine up to Coyote Flats and we’re doing DV later this month with the same outfitter
@@davidmoran6398 good ideal but don't want to go by myself with just one rig
@@youtubecarspottersguide1 I meant have a few friends book all at once :) one of my crew went out and bought a Tacoma after that... just need to work on the others.
Get on the Jeep Forums & search local/regional events. That’s how I’ve done a couple trips here in NorCal. You often don’t have to own a Jeep either; many groups welcome other makes.
Nice little Sound of Freedom photobomb!
I'd honestly be happy just camping right there where the Jets fly in low. I miss living next to Luke AFB! Great video as always Brad! 👍
