It is impossible to understate how big a hit this song was. Kenny was not the first artist to record the song but he made it HUGE, in a lot of ways it was his signature song. The songs popularity (and Kenny's) was so big that CBS made five (5) TV movies between 1980 to 1994.
I kinda disagree, I think his greatest hit was either "lady" or "buy me a rose" but I do agree this is amoung his greatest and the one he is most known for.
I think this song is secretly teaching his son not to be so high an mighty an racist an that when the lights go off at night humas are just the same we do different things
how did u come at that?its about making decisions kenny was a big non racist anyway dont make his music into something its not@@kevinsevcechreactions6360
I'm not quite sure our guy caught that the old guy was the one who died in his sleep, while the story-teller learned the lesson taught. I've noticed that just hearing a song for the first time often fails to pass all the info to a reactor.
Kenny Roger’s recording of The Gambler is a national treasure. Literally. In 2018, it was chosen for preservation in The National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, as. ‘’ culturally, historically, or artistically’’. significant. Kenny was not the first to record the song. It was recorded by several other artists, including Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash, and Don Schultz who wrote the song when he was only 23. But none of those recordings caught on. Rogers’ recording won him the best male country performance in 1980. It became his signature song and was one of five consecutive songs by Rogers to hit #1 on the country charts. It also inspired a series of 6 TV movies starring Rogers as the gambler. Rogers turned out to be a pretty good actor as well as an accomplished singer. After Rogers death in 2020, The Gambler soared to #1 on Billboard’s Digital Song list.
This was much more than a card game. The advice was about life. You can have a winning hand or a losing hand, but you're the one holding the cards and it's your decisions in life that will move you forward or backwards. Awesome song. RIP Dear Kenny
My mom was in love with KR and we REALLY gave this record a run for it's money! I´m from BA, Argentina, and when I was a kid I couldn´t understand the words completely. Even thou Mr. Rogers really paints a compelling story everytime and he really creates an atmosphere, even for 6 year old spanish speaking boys and their moms! RIP Kenny Rogers, a true legend.
He was a great person and great musician! He and Dolly Parton wrote several songs together. They were super close friends. If you haven’t heard Islands in the Stream, you should definitely check it out. Stay blessed 😇
I don't recall Kenny & Dolly writing any songs together, but they did sing some great ones together, like Islands In The Stream & You Can't Make Old Friends.
My dad, decades ago while riding along in his ol green 60 Ford pickup, made a point of having me listen (on an 8 track) to the lyrics of this song. I didn't get it back then. Now I'm an ol man, my dad's dead and gone, and Damn if I don't get it now.
Great song whether you’re a country music fan or not! 🔥RIP Kenny. 😢 He was not the first artist to do this song but his version had far greater success than any of the earlier versions. 💕
He’s got swag !! My mom took me to see him 5 time’s in concert!! Loved him every time !! Women go crazy over this dude !! My mom is 83 .. we saw him a few times in her 70’s lol 😂
She was talking to you about what life brings your way. That you had to know when to hold on, swallow pride and fold em, walk away, and when to run from a problem.
I love Kenny Rogers! He has a voice like no other. I believe he sold around a hundred fifty million albums, covered a span of at least 40-45 years making hits and performing. He was a very gifted singer. The Gambler was such a big hit he made quite a few movies afterwards inspired by The Gambler song
One of my favs for sure, have you found Charley Pride yet..He was my mom's favorite, him and Elvis..lol I regret not getting her to see Charley Pride in concert.. He came to our little island a few times, as did Kenny Rogers(I saw Kenny in concert in the 80's) My fav Charley Pride songs, Kiss An Angel Good Morning, Crystal Chandeliers, Is Anyone going to San Antone and Help Me Make It Throuh The Night.
Listen to Waylon & Willie singing ' Clean Shirt'...Willie & Merle singing' It's All Goin' To Pot'...Hank & Merle singing ' I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink'...Mark Knoffler and Chett Atkins singing ' Poor Boy Blues' , all favourites of mine
This is Kenny Rogers' signature song. Ironically, despite also playing the titular gambler, Brady Hawks, in the movies, he always said that he never actually learned to be very good at poker.
Oh, and you also gotta check out Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In), his first big hit ROCK song with First Edition. It'll blow your mind that it's the same dude.
1979. My mom had passed the previous year. My dad, bro, sis & I drove 5 hrs to the state BB tournament in Bismarck. We sang the hell out of this song. This song has a very special meaning along with the great life advice in this song. Thank you, Van. You da man!
I've heard this song a bunch of songs and for some reason it was on this listen when watching this video that that line first clicked into place for me.
The song is a life lesson that has a gambling metaphor wrapped around it. What it means is you got to know when to hold on to people you got to know when to let go of people in your life that are toxic and you got to know when to run away. It's a tough thing to know how to do it's hard to do sometimes but most of all it's not something you're going to read right all the time and once in a while you're going to lose a hand or two. But don't worry you'll get another hand keep going you got this
Through the Years is my all time favourite Kenny ballad. Also Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer - and Love Will Turn You Around. Love your reactions. Keep up the great work :)
Oh my goodness, a cool mamajama 🤣 haven't heard that in yearsssss. Kenny Rogers was the 1st country singer I tolerated. LoL Mom listened to old country non stop, Dad liked his big band, jazz and swing. I followed Dad 😉 but when country started to become more.... I would take a listen now and then once Garth came on the scene.
Check out his song with Dolly Parton you can't make old friends. The sang writer wrote it for them that write The GAMBLER and he also wrote Kenny's song The Greatest
I first started following Kenny when I was in college. He was with the First Edition. They came to my college and had a concert it was Amazing and I was hooked. It was either in 1969 or 1970
Check out Kenny and Home Free ... I think the song they did was Go Children where I send Thee... that was awesome and all acapella... Kenny is one of the legends :)
My parents took me to about every country concert they went to in the 60’s and early 70’s. We went to a Kenny Rodgers concert with my aunt and uncle. My mama and aunt went down to the stage after the concert ( most country artists would come back to talk to their fans) and he told them in no uncertain terms that he never came back and they were wasting their and his time. Nice on stage , not so much in person. I can say this because I saw it myself. They still loved his music but always remembered how he treated his fans.
@@dirtyjesus9293 His fans are the only reason he got to where he got. There are many similar stories about him. Don’t get me wrong , I like his music but he seemed to forget where he came from.
You gotta know what to keep or throw away in life and know when to walk or run away from ppl and no matter if you play your cards right or not we all end up the same spot.
He passed on recently, in his 70s. 'The Gambler' is one of my very few Country songs. His 'Love Will Turn You Around', which was in his movie he starred in, called 'Six Pack', is about a washed up NASCAR driver, who cleans up his act and winds up winning a big race and gets married by the end of the movie.
The Gambler is a song from 1978 not sure when it was put on UA-cam but I am sure this video has been viewed 100X more than 135 million. I don't like country but Kenny Rogers is cool. I love your Archie Bunker reactions. Good job.
I'm a 55yr old WV woman who grew up on country, bluegrass, and ol' timey gospel bluegrass music, and I think you're reactions to country music are great! Your facial expressions, and you jammin' with it is just cuter than a bugs ear! Lol! Look ya up some Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys, or Doyle Lawson videos and react to them. They are Bluegrass!👍

The fact they made a meme involving kenny and his death that referenced this song during covid kinda gave him the song.
how did u come at that?its about making decisions kenny was a big non racist anyway dont make his music into something its not@@kevinsevcechreactions6360
The Gambler broke even, he died in his sleep.
I'm not quite sure our guy caught that the old guy was the one who died in his sleep, while the story-teller learned the lesson taught. I've noticed that just hearing a song for the first time often fails to pass all the info to a reactor.
Very poignant, and very true.. We all break even eventually..

Ruben James by Kenny Rodgers. It is a true story about the song writer, Barry Etris's dad. Kenny Rodgers does a great job on the song
Simply a legend, RIP Kenny.
I’m 47 and this has and will continue to be one of my favorite songs!
And you're a cool dude and I'm White if that makes a difference to you
My mom was in love with KR and we REALLY gave this record a run for it's money! I´m from BA, Argentina, and when I was a kid I couldn´t understand the words completely. He was a great person and great musician! He and Dolly Parton wrote several songs together. They were super close friends. If you haven’t heard Islands in the Stream, you should definitely check it out. Stay blessed 😇
Pls try “Islands in the stream”, written by Bee gee’s. Or “Lady”, by Kenny, written by Lionel Richie.
I don't recall Kenny & Dolly writing any songs together, but they did sing some great ones together, like Islands In The Stream & You Can't Make Old Friends.
Yes!!! Islands in the stream.
Such a great song about life.
Listen to Lucille by Kenny Rogers. You'll like it.
I know this song I love it so much Rest In Paradise Kenny Rogers
One of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs❤
I love the way the gambler manages to take his drink and smokes. Well played
kenny and dolly islands in the stream is by far my favorite of all time and they just sound so unbelievable together.
My dad, decades ago while riding along in his ol green 60 Ford pickup, made a point of having me listen (on an 8 track) to the lyrics of this song. I didn't get it back then. Now I'm an ol man, my dad's dead and gone, and Damn if I don't get it now.
Coward of the county. You will love it.
Lo❤ Kenny my mom & dad use to listen to him all the time. She my lady was the one my dad loved 🥰 dedicated to my mom. Written by classic Lionel Richie
Great song whether you’re a country music fan or not! 🔥RIP Kenny. 😢
He was not the first artist to do this song but his version had far greater success than any of the earlier versions. 💕
George strait "run" greatest country song...but Kenny Roger's also legendary
Knowing when to hold and when to fold is the most important aspect of playing poker.
Knowing what games to sit in as well
Also important when doing laundry.
Yep, absolutely a song about life. It became pretty profound pretty quickly
Masterpiece of kenny Rogers, love this song.
Kenny’s the goat
He’s got swag !! My mom took me to see him 5 time’s in concert!! Loved him every time !! Women go crazy over this dude !! My mom is 83 .. we saw him a few times in her 70’s lol 😂
Genius. Great song.
Your reaction....you get it, my friend.
Make sure to watch The Gambler starring Kenny Rogers. Good movie!
One of my Dads favorite songs. This will always be a special one to me
She was talking to you about what life brings your way. That you had to know when to hold on, swallow pride and fold em, walk away, and when to run from a problem.
Kenny rogers is dropping some knowledge!!
A greater life message here.
It was also a fun movie.. the Gambler - he was in it, you gotta see it!
Bruce Boxleitener(?) was so silly in that and so great in Babylon 5.
There were actually 6 Gambler movies.
One of my favs for sure, have you found Charley Pride yet..He was my mom's favorite, him and Elvis..lol I regret not getting her to see Charley Pride in concert.. The greatest and the rose are really good songs as well.
He's talking about the journey of life and puts in a way you can understand it
So very glad you finally did this!
Basically explaining life through gambling terms but so true
dude is dapper af
Listen to Waylon & Willie singing ' Clean Shirt'...Willie & Merle singing' It's All Goin' To Pot'...Hank & Merle singing ' I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink'...Mark Knoffler and Chett Atkins singing ' Poor Boy Blues' , all favourites of mine
Hit that THANNGGG!!!! Who else is digging back through his older reactions because you've recently become a fan of Van?
You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, Know when to fold em, These are words to live life by
Kenny player in the show The Gambler, He is a Singer and Actor
you gotta check out before he was a country singer kenny rogers and the first addition "just dropped in" song
This was like my theme song back when i was dealing.
Van, you gotta check out Islands in the Stream, a fantastic duet between Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Super smooth.
I especially like the live version, where they're both wearing black.
Every hand is a winner or loser, but you definitely keep an ace. Really like your reaction.
This is country music just telling stories to music🎉
This is truth in country
This is Kenny Rogers' signature song. Ironically, despite also playing the titular gambler, Brady Hawks, in the movies, he always said that he never actually learned to be very good at poker.
I've been watching some of your old videos. And these I love. I just want to say. You see all the good music you have missed out on.
This is the Kenny song it's most well known no.1 hit.
The greatest is a great song
Oh, and you also gotta check out Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In), his first big hit ROCK song with First Edition. It'll blow your mind that it's the same dude.
I listen to this song on a weekly basis, lol
1979. My mom had passed the previous year. My dad, bro, sis & I drove 5 hrs to the state BB tournament in Bismarck. We sang the hell out of this song. This song has a very special meaning along with the great life advice in this song.

I never realized the gambler dies that night…
I've heard this song a bunch of songs and for some reason it was on this listen when watching this video that that line first clicked into place for me.
When the gambler "broke even..." he died on the train. Breaking even was an old slang for dying for a professional gambler in the 1830s-1860s
This song is a masterpiece
"Ghost Riders in The sky"... Have you done this song yet? Not Kenny but awesome
The song is a life lesson that has a gambling metaphor wrapped around it. “And in his final words I found and ace that I can keep”
So the gambler taught that lesson right before he died… what can we teach others?
He is a nice guy. Met him with my grandpa. It is his song. Your grandma wasn't talking about Kenny. She was talking bout life
Check out his song with Dolly Parton you can't make old friends. The sang writer wrote it for them that write The GAMBLER and he also wrote Kenny's song The Greatest
One of the best OG country songs in my opinion it could be just about poker but it’s not which is awesome
I first started following Kenny when I was in college. He was with the First Edition. They came to my college and had a concert it was Amazing and I was hooked. It was either in 1969 or 1970
This was a movie too. Great movie
R.I.P KENNY ROGERS 😭😭😭
Check out Kenny and Home Free ... I think the song they did was Go Children where I send Thee... that was awesome and all acapella... Kenny is one of the legends :)
"Life". "Perspective". "Cool Mamba Jamba". "Stand-up Guy". Love your terminology on this song. Thank you SO much.
This is literally Mr. Rogers neighborhood. He’s taking his hat and jacket off while singing.
It was a great movie as well 👌
This was first album I ever bought!!!
We used to have a Kenny Rogers roasters restaurant in my town. It was a rotisserie chicken restaurant that was delicious. 🤤
I loved it. I used to get the chicken sandwich and mashed potatoes and gravy.😋
@@antoinettelopes I loved the garlic potatoes.
Man I miss that place.

Van, you’re one of a few that “got the message”!
Every hands a winner and every hands a loser ,its how you play your cards in life itself....
This song was made into a movie staring Kenny Rodgers.
Check out Kenny Rogers in the first edition just checked in to see what kind of condition my condition was it 100% straight banger💥💯
A lotta great songs in that period of western music.
Oh and check out some of his movies like Six Pack, The Gambler, and Coward of the County.
RIP Kenny Rogers. Legend
RIP Kenny.
Gotta love the old songs that tell a story, and this is one of the best of all time!
We love Kenny Rogers.
Give a listen to my favorite Kenny Rogers song, 'Blaze of Glory,' a couple of more great ones are 'Ruby' and 'Ruben James.'
I'm a 55yr old WV woman who grew up on country, bluegrass, and ol' timey gospel bluegrass music, and I think you're reactions to country music are great! Your facial expressions, and you jammin' with it is just cuter than a bugs ear! Lol!
